It came to be seen as a document from Kurtág's workshop, offering a key to his grander symphonic, chamber and vocal works as well. This change is exemplified in the subtitle Diary entries, personal messages added from the fifth volume onwards.

Bartók’s Rumanian Folk Dances, composed in 1915, are among his best-known works. They exist in multiple forms, since as well as several piano arrangements and a later orchestral version of his own there also exist arrangements by his contemporaries that were made with his consent. Today we can even access performances of the dances by Bartók himself; these recordings document varied repeats enriched by octave doublings to make a sort of “concert version” of the dances. Bartók expert László Somfai brings order to the rich fund of sources, and in Henle’s Urtext edition enters significant variants directly into the musical text itself.

The previously available facsimile of theautograph in the Henle catalogue also allowed a profound look into this work process but it was not possible to see what Liszt had originally notated in the passages that were pasted over. These paste-overs have since been removed and in our newedition we can see for the first time what is hidden behind them. The knowledgeable introduction by the Liszt expert Mária Eckhardt provides an abundance of information and a unique look over the composer’s shoulder.

It is a rare opportunity to hear two swing era giants together in a relaxed club setting for a programme of Jazz standards and quality ballads.  This recording also represents a meeting of two great jazz traditions; Ben Webster first achieved fame as a star soloist with Duke Ellington Orchestra in the early 1940s and Buck Clayton was the featured trumpeter with Count Basie’s Big Band from 1936 to 1943. Both subsequently followed freelance careers and their musical paths crossed infrequently, making this release an especially valuable musical document.
