The Mystery of Light : "NIGHTLIGHTS"

Light, sun, moon, stars: there has always been a connection to faith, the occult and mysticism. Different constellations were supposed to predict the future, and some phenomena have been interpreted as punishment by different Gods. From sunrises and solar eclipses, through rainbows, the scattering of light, sunset in the daytime, moonrises, the northern lights, the new moon, crescent moons and stellar constellations, to shooting stars… our observations encompass all this and much more. The Mystery of Light is the first of a series of pieces with the same theme. ‘NIGHTLIGHTS’ deals with lights of the night: created partly by nature and partly by man himself and consists ofthree movements: Opener and Star Shower, Lunar Eclipse and Aurora and Fireworks.

Crescent Moon : Grand Overture

Crescent Moon is a festive overture composed by Jan Van der Roost and was commissioned by a Japanese wind band. The piece begins solemnly in the middle register but gradually becomes brighter and more brilliant as the moon rises in the sky andbegins to give more light. After this somewhat stately introduction, a virtuoso allegro emerges, displaying technical prowess in all registers, before the piece culminates with a joyful mood of optimism. An ideal concert opener, Crescent Moonwill fill your ears with joy and happiness!

Refraction

Refraction is a work that uses the entire band and all the colours it can possibly produce. As the title suggests, it was inspired the fascinating physical phenomenon known as refraction. Just like light is split and disbursed into all its colours, the main theme is split into little motives. As the individual motives are disbursed throughout the band, different sections become more prominent, only to recede into the general texture again. The work concludes with the fusion of all these elements in a monumental climax of movement, sound and colour.

Fantasia Helvetica

Pfarreimusik Wünnewil-Flamatt requested a new work to be commissioned for the celebration of its 111th anniversary. They asked the composer to create a piece lasting approximately 11 minutes and 11 seconds. The band asked Jan Van der Roost to reflect on a number of aspects from the past, as well as the current state of affairs. The piece contains lyrical movements, cheerful and jubilant parts, as well as light introverted sequences. Fantasia Helvetica is a varied concert piece with a number of challenging passages, but is also fun to play!

Le Willis (1883 84) and its two act reworking Le Villi (1884 85: revised 1889) are Puccini's inaugural works in the operatic genre. Uniquely among Puccini's operas, neither version was ever published in full score, and both present significant textual problems. The manuscript of Le Willis was dismembered and reworked as the basis of Le Villi: and Ricordi's master hire score of Le Villi was destroyed in 1943—and with it an entire tradition of revisions and corrections. Successive editions of the printed vocal score of Le Villi are of very uneven quality. The new two volume Critical Edition is the fruit of an extensive recension of the surviving sources in the light of a collateral transmission in which authority is often shared between sources. As well as the autograph full scores, drafts and sketch materials (notably the composer's continuity draft) have been brought to bear on the numerous text critical problems that arise. Volume I of the Edition makes possible for the first time the performance of the one act opera Le Willis, reconstructed from the two parts of Puccini's manuscript held at the Morgan Library and Museum, New York, and the Archivio Ricordi, Milan. Le Willis emerges as a valuable addition to the limited repertory of one act operas, with a striking vein of symphonism that looks forward to Manon Lescaut. Seen in its true light—as an expression of the Milanese scapigliatura—the opera is revealed as musically and dramaturgically coherent in its own terms and well worthy of modern performance. Volume II contains the score of Le Villi in its final 1889 revision, based on the composer's autograph full score and the 1889 edition of the printed vocal score. Additional material is included in appendices, notably Roberto's original extended 1885 Scena. Besides the Critical Apparatus and Source Descriptions, a comprehensive Historical Introduction sheds light on the compositional history and context, hitherto obscured by hearsay and misunderstanding.

Dance of Uzume is a concertino that is based on a Japanese myth: out of anger toward her brother Susanowa, the storm god, the sun goddess Amaterasu hides in a cave. The goddess of joy, Uzume, succeeds in luring the sun goddess out of the cave by dancing wildly. The joy and laughter of the other gods as they watch Uzume arouses Amaterasu’s curiosity and with her appearance, the light on earth returns. This fantastic new original work will make a much needed addition to the advanced repertoire for saxophone and concert band. A version for saxophone and piano is also available.

Earthquake

On average, about eight thousand (mostly light) earthquakes occur worldwide each day. Composer Jan de Haan has always been fascinated by this natural phenomenon. Earthquake portrays the beautiful South-American peninsula, Isla Iberi which lies directly on a major fault line. The peace and tranquility is shattered by a major tremor and the terrified people flee in fear. In addition to showing the earthquakes destructive power, Earthquake also conveys the courage and faith of the industrious people of Isla Iberia, as they energetically start the reconstruction of their beloved residential area. Earthquake is dedicated to the memory of all victims of the devastating Asiantsunami which occurred on 26 December 2004.
