The Graces of Love : Le Gratie d'Amore

“The Graces of Love” (Le Gratie d’Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri, the famous dance master of the Milan court in the Renaissance. It contains numerous dance tunes and precise descriptions of courtly dances. It also includes the tune Il bianco fior (The White Flower) on which the first movement of my piece is based. A vigorous dance in three-four, it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement, calm and contemplative in character, features the tune Vaghe bellezze ... (Veiled Beauty …). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is varied anddeveloped. Finally, the third movement contains a Saltarello based on a tune by Vincenzo Galilei, the father of the famous astronomer, Galileo Galilei. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literal quotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and fanfare band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!

Luceafarul (The Evening Star) is based on an old Romanian legend about a princess who falls in love with the evening star. Eventually the star returns her love, and one night he climbs down in human form to her. However, their love failsbecause of his realisation that such a connection between heaven and earth is impossible. Thomas Doss has translated this romantic, touching love drama into an equally dramatic and emotional musical work. Deeply moving!

Georg Anton Benda‘s melodrama „Medea“ (1775) was one of the most successful German musical theatre works of the late 18th century. With a libretto by Friedrich Wilhelm Gotter, the work soon became a great influence within the melodrama genre. Between 1775 and about 1790, the melodrama was considered an extremely popular (albeit controversial) part of musical theatre, in particular in German-speaking regions. A contrasting third movement depicts Napoleon the fearless general and the countless battles he waged. A truly powerful work about one of histories truly powerful men.
