Jesper Lundgaard, Enrico Pieranunzi and Alex Riel met at the famous Jazzhus Montmartre which became the genesis of this exciting group. 60 Out Of Shape was the result of this performance - also a celebration of Lundgaard's 60th birthday. Featuring Lundgaard on Bass, Enrico Pieranunzi on Piano and Alex Riel on Drums, there were high expectations for the combination of three world-class musicians. The result of this performance was a fantastic exhibition of improvisation on songs from the Great American Songbook, including Autumn Leaves, All The Things You Are  and My Funny Valentine .

Clarence Williams (1893 - 1965) was an American jazz musician, who tried his hand (successfully) in almost all spheres of the music industry: he was known as a pianist, composer, promoter, vocalist, theatrical producer, and publisher. Having run away from home at age 12 to join a travelling show, he settled in New Orleans and became a well-regarded entertainer, while also composing new songs. After touring as a musician, he started a music publishing company and a record label, producing and participating in early recordings by Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Bessie Smith, Virginia Liston, Irene Scruggs, and many others. The Clarence Williams Collection – Volume 3 covers Williams' prolific output from 1929-30. Transferred and re-mastered by John R.T. Davis, the sound quality is outstanding.

This is Vol. 3 of a long series of releases of the complete Treasury Broadcasts from the mid forties. Contracted by the U.S. Treasury Dept. in 1945, Duke Ellington And His Orchestra performed a series of public service radio broadcasts to arouse patriotism and sell war bonds to help the U.S. military defeat the Japanese to end World War 2. Besides performing music which was already well known his own as well as others' Ellington uses the programs presented here to test, check and refine new material, such as the tunes "Blutopia" and "Carnegie Blues." It's very lucky that these precious, well recorded radio broadcasts have survived. They represent an important, yet elusive, period in the evolution of jazz namely, the mid 40's. This 2 CD set features several star performers Johnny Hodges, Rex Stewart, AI Sears, Joya Sherrill and AI Hibbler, among others and especially trombonist Lawrence Brown.

Leonard Feather: Continental Sessions Vol.3

Two of the groups on this CD were existing bands (Eddie South, Mary Lou Williams); the other four were specially assembled for the Continental Records recording sessions. The music (28 numbers ? 78 min.) was recorded in the Continental studios in 1944-46. The musicians ? and the music ? blends the best of the swing era with the best of the new emerging bebop era in jazz, and includes Sarah Vaughan?s first recordings in her own name. Leonard Feather?s All Stars were assembled from winners of the Esquire Jazz Poll and included trumpet star Buck Clayton, trad jazz clarinet master Edmond Hall and tenor giant Coleman Hawkins, as well as bop jazz bassist Oscar Pettiford. At this time in the mid-forties, both drummer J.C. Heard and pianist Mary Lou Williams were excellent examples of musicians who were stars in both the swing and bebop era, while trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and alto saxophonist Charlie Parker were just getting established as the creators of bebop. While there are many highpoints on this 78-minute CD, some of the best are Sarah Vaughan?s wonderful young voice on ?Mean To Me?, and Coleman Hawkins? tenor sax on ?Thanks For the Memory?. In its short life, Continental Records was successful in bringing together the top names in swing and bebop for some very exciting sessions, as this CD ? and the previous two CDs in this series ? happily reveals.

The music on these two CD?s (51 tunes) has never been released before. The music is taken from 4 radio broadcasts in New York City in 1945 ? part live and part in the radio studio. Aside from providing great big band jazz for the radio audience, the point of these broadcasts was also for Duke Ellington to sell war bonds in the final year of World War II. The repertoire consists mostly of well-known Ellington numbers, plus a few rarities. These radio broadcasts are particularly important because commercial studio recordings were banned during World War II. One tune on CD 2 ? "I Miss Your Kiss", featuring the great trombone work of Lawrence Brown ? was never recorded commercially. Other highpoints are Johnny Hodges? smooth alto sax on "Mood to be Wooed", and Rex Stewart?s trumpet work on "Emancipation Celebration".

Part of a series of re-releases of Storyville?s traditional jazz repertoire, recorded from the beginning of the 50?s and into the 60?s. It all started in 1950 when Chris Barber came to Denmark. We introduced Chris to The Ramblers, and I even succeeded in persuading Memory/Danish Vogue to record 4 titles. In the following years (1953 - 1963) Storyville?s 'artist-agency', Jazz Jamboree, booked a number of English artists for tours in Denmark: Ken Colyer, Chris Barber, Cy Laurie, Graham Stewart, Sandy Brown, Lennie Baldwin and Bob Wallis among others. These CDs contains the result of these visits that have been immortalized either in the studio or by concert recordings. Much of this material has not seen the light of day until now. The Danish bands were recorded at the same time : Papa Bue, Adrian Bentzon, Henrik Johansen, Bohana, Ricardo, Arne Birger, Theis-Nyegaard, etc. We have chosen to let the basis for the series be 45 EPs. In this way the 15 CDs, which the series contains, each start off with 3 EPs by 3 different artists. To that is added unreleased titles or material from earlier 45s and compilation LPs, so every CD represents 5-7 different bands.

Trio 65 ½ was the trio that won all the jazz-competitions in the mid 60’s and were “talk of the town”. The three incredibly talented musicians listened to their idol, the pianist Bill Evans’ LP Trio 64 and halfway through 1965 Ole Streenberg came up with the name: Trio 65 ½. It’s with great joy that Storyville Records present Trio 65 ½’s music from 1966 and 1967. This album is proof that Danish avantgardejazz from the 1960’s was at an international level, and it deserves to be listened to – both due to its historical value, but also its significant and extraordinary sound.

The music here has never been released before on CD, and is comprised of 2 extremely rare LP’s: “Sahib Shihab & the Danish Radio Jazz Group” (recorded in 1965) and “Sentiments” (recorded in 1971). Joining saxophonist Sahib Shihab on these two sessions are the best musicians on the Danish scene in the late 60’s, including Bent Jædig on tenor sax, Palle Mikkelborg on trumpet, Torolf Mølgaard on trombone, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass, Alex Riel on drums and the famous American pianist Kenny Drew. The musical style is jazz, sometimes blended with an Eastern, North African or American Indian influence and – on one tune – even rock music. This CD is packed with exciting compositions and wonderful performances; check out Kenny Drew’s moving ballad “Extase”, among many fine examples.

Duke Ellington: The Treasury Shows Vol.22

In April 1945, to promote the sale of war bonds, the US Treasury Department contacted Duke Ellington to do a series of 55 min public broadcasts. These sessions would give Ellington a wide choice of material to perform including his older work; new instrumentals and pop tunes and his extended works as well. This double CD contains a series of different radio broadcasts from the Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco and the famous Hurricane Restaurant in New York among others. The broadcasts are featured complete with radio speaks and encouragements to buy bonds read by The Duke himself + bonus material and extensive liner notes. CD1 contains a radio broadcast from the Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco, recorded on August 3, 1946 with bonus tracks from a session at the Lakeside Park, El Patio Ballroom in Denver, July 1945, 1942. CD2 features a broadcast recorded at Meadowbrook, Culver City, California, August 17, 1946. Included are also three bonus tracks from a radio broadcast at the Hurricane Restaurant in New York City, August 21, 1943. This Treasury Shows addition was recorded amid tensions between the Duke and his record company, a large musician’s strike, the surprising deaths of several prominent band members and political events such as rising racial and social tension and World War II, all of which is meticulously explained in the extensive liner notes by Duke Ellington connoisseur and journalist Roger Boyes. The musical gift of the versatile Ellingtonians always prevails, however—as Boyes for example writes: “ Hodges’ solo [on A Flower is a Lovesome Thing] is three and-a-half minutes of pure melody, and in the unlikely even that you tire of that, Stryhorn’s accompaniment offers a parallel three-and-a-half minutes of great beauty ”. Duke Ellington and his Orchestra always deliver on energy, skill and rhythm.

The Duke Ellington Orchestra which performed the eagerly-awaited Second Carnegie Hall Concert on Dec. 11, 1943, was a band which consisted both of famous old alumni and exciting new talent like clarinetest Jimmy Hamilton, bassist Alvin Raglin and vocalist Al Hibbler. Because of the recording ban during World War II, doing live concerts became vital to maintain both the band?s popularity and some form of income. Add to this the fact that Carnegie Hall was the most prestigious venue of them all, and its easy to understand why the Ellington Orchestra was determined to play its best that evening, performing old standards and Ellington favourites. This is the first of a nine-volume 18-track set, comprised primarily of previously unissued performances by the legendary jazz pianist, Art Tatum. This CD covers the years 1934 (the first year Tatum recorded) to 1944, with Tatum performing in solo, trio and quartet contexts. Most of the music (which is from the 40's) was produced for the Armed Forces Radio Service, who broadcast to the U.S. military during World War II. Besides the eight solo tunes, which include some of Tatum's first recordings from 1934, there are early tracks with Tatum's own famous trio, plus five tunes with the legendary jazz guitarist, Les Paul. The discovery of this unknown music by the greatest jazz pianist of all time is the musical equivalent of finding previously unpublished plays by William Shakespeare. While the tracks here are from the earlier part of Tatum's career, his astonishing technique and creative brilliance, his strong stride piano, blinding speed and virtuoso arpeggios, are all impressively showcased here.Featuring Slam Stewart and Clinton Nordquist on bass. After World War II, Voice of America radio broadcasts by Leonard Feather and Willis Conover helped to lay the foundation for subsequent tours. U.S. State Department sponsored the tours that sent America's Jazz Ambassadors around the world. They travelled from 1955 to the '70s and visited such different places as the Soviet Union, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, India, Thailand, Burma, Pakistan, Philippines, Ceylon, Japan, Ghana, Cameroon, Congo, Egypt, Senegal, Nigeria, Morocco, Kenya, Chile, Argentina and Europe.
