Carsten Dahl: Effata - Solo Piano

Carsten Dahl is a multi-faceted pianist - and quite likely the best and most creative pianist in Europe. In 2000 he recorded The Butterfly Dream, his first solo CD for Storyville. There were 14 tracks on the CD, named "1", "2", "3", etc., except for the 13th tune that was named "The Butterfly Dream". A decade later he is repeating the concept with this new CD - this time 15 numbers that he calls "EFFATA 1", "EFFATA 2", etc., except for track 15, which is titled "GLORIE" and is dedicated to his wife, the saxophonist Christina Dahl. The Aramaic word EFFATA means "be opened" and is one that informs the artist.Listening to the CD, one thinks of Keith Jarrett and Cecil Taylor and their style of free improvisation, or Mary Lou Williams, who had the same ideas with her album Zodiac Suite. Banjo player Bjarne Petersen had just been replaced by pianist Jørn Jensen, giving the excellent, highly inspired musicality of the band a more modern sound and style thanks to Jensen’s excellent arrangements and stronger emphasis on swing. This live recording from Dresden clearly transmits the enthusiasm of both the band and the audience on this historic occasion.

The 15 tunes (64 min.) on this CD are a kind of ?greatest hits? of Fessor?s Big City Band, taken from four studio recordings made in Copenhagen between 1972-77. While rooted in New Orleans traditional jazz, the music here includes modern compositions by Charles Mingus, Cannonball Adderley and Oliver Nelson, as well as traditional numbers by Kid Ory, Sidney Bechet and Louis Armstrong. There are also three original tunes by Fessor. Ole ?Fessor? Lindgreen?s tight and tasteful arrangements give plenty of solo space to the horn players. Whether the tune is a traditional hymn like Amen, or a modern opus like Oliver Nelson?s Critic?s Choice, Fessor gives the music his irresistible, exuberant personal touch, which is why Fessor?s Big City Band is still very much alive and well today.

This is volume 12 of Duke Ellington The Treasure Shows Jerry Valburn is the producer of the DETS series which will result in 24 double Cd's at its completion. It contains Treasury Broadcast 22 recorded September 8, 1945 and Treasury Broadcast September 15, 1945 plus a Broadcast from the New Zanzibar New York recorded October 1, 1945. This is first time the music is released on CD. The repertoire consists mostly of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn compositions. The Rogers and Hammerstein hit If I Love You is an arrangement by Billy Strayhorn who plays piano the vocal by Kay Davis. Emancipation Celebration from Ellington's suite Black, Brown and Beige has fine solo work from Rex Stewart. The double CD contains 35 numbers/120 minutes and many fine solos played by the famous Duke Ellington musicians.

In addition, there are two live numbers from 1997, making a total of 17 tunes on this 56-min. CD. Sammy Rimington is an English clarinetist who plays in the best George Lewis/John Handy New Orleans tradition. On both sessions on this CD, Rimington is solidly backed by the prominent Danish Dixieland drummer Søren ?Doc? Houlind. There is a wonderful variety of music performed on this CD, including ancient New Orleans classics like John Handy?s ?Cap?s Blues?, French gypsy jazz guitar master Django Reinhardt?s ?Nuages?, popular tunes like ?Red Sails In the Sunset?, and religious songs like ?An Evening Prayer?. The intense drive and outstanding musicianship on this CD is a joy to hear ? it is New Orleans music at its best.

The 15 tunes (69 min.) on this CD were recorded live in concert in Denver, Colorado, in 1966. Six of the numbers have never been previously released; the rest were originally released on LP on the Pumpkin record label. Don Ewell plays stride piano, strongly influenced by Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller. The repertoire on the CD is based on compositions by the great stride pianists Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and Earl Hines.Don Ewell did not do much recording and therefore, as prominent jazz journalist Alun Morgan says: "We are fortunate to have this (CD) representing Don Ewell at his best." Ewell, himself, was very pleased that night in Denver, Colorado; everything was right:the atmosphere, the piano, the recording and, not least of all - the band and the music. The 75 min. of music on this CD (15 tunes) are comprised of six sessions recorded in studios in Copenhagen during 1956-66 - the last ten years of Rolf Billberg's life. Accompanying Swedish alto saxophonist Billberg on these sessions are the best of the modern Scandinavian jazz musicians of the time, including Lars Gullin, Jørgen Ryg, Atli Bjørn, William Schiöpffe and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. The repertoire includes a spiritual, jazz standards, be-bop favorites and two of Billberg's own compositions. Some of the music on this CD has never been previously released. Rolf Billberg was one of the absolute most prominent Scandinavian jazz musicians of the 50's and 60's. Billberg was a unique individualist, contrasting burning lyricism with cool distance in his style of playing - a style influenced mainly by Charlie Parker and Lee Konitz. All the tunes on this CD - from "Ol' Man River" to "Opus De Funk" - present brilliant work by Billberg. Rolf Billberg characterized Scandinavian modern jazz in the sixties. A number of Storyville Records' iconic jazz and blues albums are now available in a new series of remastered high quality vinyl releases. Featuring some of the best artists from the vast Storyville catalogue, the “Storyville Vinyl Remasters” series presents great music on deluxe vinyl. Each release is limited edition, pressed onto 180 gram virgin vinyl with the original covers and sleeve notes preserved. Updated notes have been added to the inner sleeves and a free download of the album is included.   The audio has been remastered specifically for vinyl to secure the best sound that these great releases deserve. This historic live album was recorded at the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen on November 15, 1963 and featured saxophonists Archie Shepp and John Tchicai, trumpeter Don Cherry, bassist Don Moore and drummer JC Moses. The distinctive style of contemporary jazz the quintet played was already familiar in New York but welcomed as refreshing and innovative in Europe and Scandinavia. This performance was recorded on the final night before the group split up and its members returned to the US with only Archie Shepp remaining in Denmark.

Part of a series of re-releases of Storyville?s traditional jazz repertoire, recorded from the beginning of the 50?s and into the 60?s. It all started in 1950 when Chris Barber came to Denmark. We introduced Chris to The Ramblers, and I even succeeded in persuading Memory/Danish Vogue to record 4 titles. In the following years (1953 - 1963) Storyville?s 'artist-agency', Jazz Jamboree, booked a number of English artists for tours in Denmark: Ken Colyer, Chris Barber, Cy Laurie, Graham Stewart, Sandy Brown, Lennie Baldwin and Bob Wallis among others. These CDs contains the result of these visits that have been immortalized either in the studio or by concert recordings. Much of this material has not seen the light of day until now. The Danish bands were recorded at the same time : Papa Bue, Adrian Bentzon, Henrik Johansen, Bohana, Ricardo, Arne Birger, Theis-Nyegaard, etc. We have chosen to let the basis for the series be 45 EPs. In this way the 15 CDs, which the series contains, each start off with 3 EPs by 3 different artists. To that is added unreleased titles or material from earlier 45s and compilation LPs, so every CD represents 5-7 different bands.

It was in the 30s and 40s when the radio was the most important media before television took over. There were many different radio broadcasts all over USA. Live programs from different concerts and studio recordings. Count Basie had nightly broadcasts from Reno Club in Kansas City. When John Hammond heard a broadcast he went to Kansas City to hear the band in person. He then decided to bring it to New York City where they opened at the Roseland. To be regular featured on the radio was the best promotion an artist could get. Storyville has found many fine radio programs with various artists that will be released in the Legendary Radio Broadcasts series. Contents: COUNT BASIE The first 15 minutes of the oldest preserved broadcast from Chatterbox, Pittsburgh, February 10, 1937 are included on this CD. The titles are Moten Swing, King Porter Stomp, I?ll Always Be In Love With You, You do the Darnest Things, Baby and Swinging At The Daisy Chain. Lester Young, Buck Clayton, Walter Page, Jo Jones and vocalist Jimmy Rushing are members of the band.Two other broadcasts are included. CBS "American Dances" the complete broadcast, New York, July 9, 1938 and also the complete broadcast from Southland, Boston, 1940. Dicky Wells, Harry Edison and Helen Humes are now in the band.

This previously unreleased music was recorded live by the Danish Radio at the famous jazz club Montmartre, in Copenhagen, in June, 1975. The CD consists of 7 tracks (69 min.), and the repertoire is a round blending of blues, standards and modern jazz, including tunes like Garner?s ?Misty?, ?Bye Bye Blackbird?, Ellington?s ?Satin Doll?, and ?The Theme?. Since Clark Terry and Ernie Wilkins had been close friends ? privately and musically ? since their childhood in St. Louis, there is a special communication and relaxed cohesiveness in their playing, not least of all because of their years together in the Count Basie Orch. Ernie Wilkins is best known for his great talents as composer and arranger for big bands - especially Count Basie and countless jazz singers - while Clark Terry is a premier trumpeter and flugelhorn player, famous as a soloist and as side-man in Count Basie?s Orch. The band on this CD was on a European tour at the time of this Montmartre gig, and were a tight, relaxed unit, featuring a fabulous rhythm section (Horace Parlan, Mads Vinding and Bjarne Rostvold), plus two star guests ? Richard Boone and Dexter Gordon.Two of the highlights on the CD are a 15-min. version of ?Bye-Bye Blackbird? and a swinging and very funny blues, where, believe it or not, Richard Boone, Dexter Gordon and Clark Terry do some singing. High professionalism and a relaxed, good feeling make this first-time release a perfect tribute to two old friends from St. Louis, who are two of the top names in modern jazz today.

John Tchicai was excited when we presented our plans to release a double CD with material from his 2 Storyville LPs with three different sessions recorded in Denmark. One was recorded at Club Montmartre March 15, 1977 and another session in a studio in Copenhagen March 29, 1977 and the third session also in Copenhagen November 10 ? 14, 1987. John Tchicai took part in the project from the very beginning and also chose the liner note writer Andrey Henkin.John Tchicai began his career playing alto saxophone and ended it playing tenor saxophone. His first group was called ?The Yardbird Quintet? but then he met Archie Shepp in Helsinki and later Albert Ayler and that made him interested in the ?Free Jazz Style?.
