The accompanying three CDs of lessons teach these arrangements phrase by phrase as well as presenting the original recordings. In this lesson Ernie Hawkins teaches three Rev. Davis arrangements that will challenge your fingers. Rev. Gary Davis's tour de force in concert was his Soldiers March. This is a multipart instrumental played in the Key of F and C and is a showcase in demonstrating the genius of Rev. Davis's playing and arranging skills. Few country blues guitarists played in the Key of F but Rev. Davis explored this key with religious as well as old pop standards. Darktown Strutters Ball is a fascinating arrangement that captures the atmosphere of the 1920s. Rev. Davis use to tell his students that playing with a bottleneck was ?cheating?. Yet his Whistlin' Blues uses this technique combined with an Open D6 tuning to create an unusual boogie piano sound. Ernie Hawkins teaches each tune phrase by phrase and carefully shows you the right hand picking as well as the left hand fingerings that were unique to Rev. Davis's approach. Stefan produced Ton's first solo album, Famous Ragtime Guitar Solos, in 1973. This contained 14 of Ton's arrangements of classic ragtime pieces and became a best seller. In 1975, Ton's second solo album, Guitar Instrumentals To Tickle Your Fingers, was released containing transcriptions and arrangements of novelty rags, early jazz and popular tunes of the 1930s and 1940s. In 1980, Ton's third solo album was released and continued his exploration of arrangements for solo fingerpicking Guitar, this time with a repertoire covering jazz, blues, contemporary pop and country and even Mexican folklore. This album was titled Lulu's Back In Town, Hot Guitar Solos. Ton also participated in several anthology projects, i.e. Novelty Guitar Instrumentals, I Got Rhythm, Masters of Ragtime Guitar, The Entertainer and How To Play Ragtime Guitar. One of acoustic music?s true innovators and eccentrics, John Fahey was a crucial figure in expanding the boundaries of the acoustic guitar over the last few decades. His music was so eclectic that it?s arguable whether he should be defined as a ?folk? artist. In a career that saw him issue several dozen albums, he drew from blues, Native American music, Indian ragas, experimental dissonance, and pop. His good friend Dr. Demento has noted that Fahey ?was the first to demonstrate that the fingerpicking techniques of traditional country and blues steel-string guitar could be used to express a world of non-traditional musical ideas -- harmonies and melodies you?d associate with Bartok, Charles Ives, or maybe the music of India.? The more meditative aspects of his work foreshadowed new age music, yet Fahey played with a fierce imagination and versatility that outshone any of the guitarists in that category. His idiosyncrasy may have limited him to a cult following, but it also ensured that his work continues to sound fresh.Fahey was a colorful figure from the time he became an accomplished guitarist in his teens. Already a collector of rare early blues and country music, he made his first album in 1959, ascribing part of it to the pseudonymous ?Blind Joe Death.? In college, he wrote a thesis on Charley Patton (an exotic subject at the time). Yet Fahey did not perform publicly for money until the mid-1960s, after his third album. Fahey?s early albums for Takoma in the mid-1960s laid out much of the territory he would explore. His instrumentals, filtering numerous genres of music into his own style, evoked haunting and open spaces. At times they could be soothing and plaintive; at other times they were disquieting, even dissonant.
