In this edition, Victor Van Puijenbroeck has created a piano reduction of the orchestral score and also has adapted the lute part to be played on guitar. German bassoonist and pedagogue Julius Weissenborn is known primarily as an author and composer of method and etude books familiar to all bassoonists. However, he also composed a number of solo works, including a collection of pieces in his Opus 9, for bassoon and piano. The first two works of this opus, Arioso and Humoreske, pair so well together that they are often performed together as a single piece, something slow and lyrical, followed by something quicker and technical. And it just so turns out that with a relatively simple transposition, they are perfectly suited for the bass clarinet. In this edition, for each movement, the piano part has been transposed down a whole-stepto better accommodate the bass clarinet. German bassoonist and pedagogue Julius Weissenborn is known primarily as an author and composer of method and etude books familiar to all bassoonists. Similar to the Premier Solo of Eugene Bourdeau, the Capriccio is often regarded as somewhat of a secondary solo, good for students before they move on to the "real" repertoire. However, it is a well thought-out and fun piece, and is perfectly suited for the bass clarinet. In this edition, the piano part has been transposed down a whole-step (toB-flat major), to better accommodate the bass clarinet. In addition, there are two solo parts included, one for extended range bass clarinet (to low C), and for standard range bass clarinet (to low E). Although Ferdinand David is mostly known as a composer for a couple of his instrumental works, namely a Concertino for Trombone, and this Concertino, Op. 12 for bassoon, perhaps he should be most well-known as the violinist who premiered the Violin Concerto of Felix Mendelssohn in 1845. He was appointed as concertmaster of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig when Mendelssohn, a childhood friend, became the principal conductor in 1835. This Concertino for bassoon also exists in a version for viola, and now subsequently this edition for bass clarinet. Adam Falckenhagen (1697 - 1754) was a German lutenist and composer of the late Baroque period, travelling from court to court throughout his life, eventually settling in Bayreuth. It was there that he won the favour of Wilhelmine of Prussia, Margravine of Bayreuth, a lutenist herself, and the sister of Frederick the Great. It was 1995 when I had the fortune to listen to the freshly published recording of the suites performed by Mstislav Rostropovich. I would have given anything to be able to play them, and this was what inspired me to study the bass clarinet. The series of diverse emotions which I subsequently experienced made me see Music in a completely new way. I began learning them slowly, inevitably adapting the text. As I discovered their educational value, the knowledge of harmonic structures, forms and stylistic features gradually evolved within me. Over 20 years I have studied various editions and listened to the meaning which these suites have had for many famous performers. Ipleasantly discovered the commendable work of other clarinettists who in turn have dedicated themselves to approaching this composer with the bass clarinet. The objective of this version isn’t to impose conditions on how to play the suites. We carried out unique research into the coherence of the text, based on the manuscripts of Anna Magdalena Bach and Johann Peter Kellner. The choice to remove any type of articulation and agogic was made in order to encourage the development of personal interpretation, which obviously requires a fundamental investigation of the sources. This edition comes with 4 versions of the suite. The reason behind producing four versions (which are in different keys and tones) is because every musician has their own tastes and tendencies. Personally, I prefer the bass clef transposed to B flat because I find the bass clef to be the most appropriate for the spirit of the low instrument.
