These two spirituals -- Steal Away and Were You There? -- have become staples in the gospel repertoire and have been skillfully and sensitively combined into a quodlibet for male Voices with Piano accompaniment. Twentieth century English Organist Hazel Hudson has published many of these combinations of separate tunes into one work, as well as works for student musicians and arrangements of religious music.The work is of intermediate difficulty and is an appealing piece for Choral programmes.

GF Handel: Come And Trip It In A Minor

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) held numerous appointments at the Royal Court and Westminster Abbey, and is considered by many to be the greatest ever English-born composer. His prolific work covered all fields: orchestral, ecclesiastical, operatic, theatrical, incidental, and chamber music were all enriched by his output. Come And Trip It is an aria from the 1740 work L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato (HWV 55), based on a poem by John Milton. It is a graceful movement in the Minuet style, often referred to as a "Dance Song". It has been arranged for Medium Voice and Piano by Mary Carmichael.

Mendelssohn wrote the Christian anthem Hear My Prayer in Germany in 1844 and premiered it the next year in London. William Bartholomew wrote the English lyrics as well as collaborating with the composer on his oratorio Elijah.Wings of a Dove, the second part of Hear My Prayer, is frequently performed as a separate work and was made famous in the UK through a 1927 recording. The work was originally written for SATB Chorus and Organ or Orchestra, and is here rendered for two Voices with Piano, transposed from G to F to meet the requirements of amateur singers.

A favourite at weddings and funerals as well as in the concert hall, Ave Maria demands breath control of the singer and good Piano skills. This version was adapted for two Voices especially for performance by school, festival and amateur Choruses.When Bach wrote his Well-Tempered Clavier in 1722 for educational purposes he could never have imagined that his Prelude No 1 in C was to be given a new life as the ground for Gounod’s Ave Maria nearly 140 years later. Charles Gounod created the work as an improvisation, transcribed by his father for Violin with Piano and harmonium. It wasn’t until 1859 that the Latin text was published with the work.

On the evening the novelty piece was introduced, such was the crowd’s enthusiasm that it was performed nine times. Similar scenes followed wherever the work was performed and it became one of the pair’s most popular works.

The composer’s inventiveness and musicality are apparent in this late Baroque Gavot, which is a fine choice for processionals.Composer, Organist, and ecclesiastical arranger Wlliam Boyce was one of the leading musicians of his day. He completed the great tome Cathedral Music following the death of the editor which is still in use in Anglican services. He was widely celebrated for his odes, anthems, masques, incidental music and in particular his eight symphonies, from which this short dance is drawn. His work is enjoying a new appreciation.

In 1929, he was declared ‘Britain’s greatest composer’ according to the number of performances of his works. Over the course of his career, he was a church Organist, musical director at London’s Vaudeville Theatre, editor to several music publishing firms and Music Director of the Columbia Gramophone Company.His most popular works are a series of Orchestral tone poems, like this one based on a verse from his own poem, In a Monastery Garden. The simplified version was prepared by the composer.
