Two Children's Songs

József Karai (1927-2013) studied composition under Ferenc Farkas and János Viski, and studied conducting under János Ferencsik, András Kórodi, and László Somogyi. His oeuvre includes instrumental works, songs and cantatas, but he became best known for his choral works. This is certainly conditioned by his professional career between 1948 and 1969 he conducted several choirs in Budapest. His works have been published in several countries. His composition entitled Two Children's Songs was written in 1956-1957 with text from the poems by Sándor Weöres (Spring Greeting, Summer Evening), and it was first published in April 1961 by the Hungarian State Music Publisher. This three-partwork is recommended for more advanced ensembles.

The history of Liszt's intensely virtuosic and unwaveringly popular Transcendental Etudes dates back to his 12 Etudes composed around 1826. Liszt later reworked 11 pieces of this not-so-technically-difficult series into virtuoso concert etudes, and replaced one of the etudes with a new piece. This version was published in 1837 under the name Grandes études. The composer Péter Andorka (born 1987) studied under Miklós Kocsár and Miklós Csemiczky at the Bartók Secondary School of Music and under János Vajda at the Liszt Academy of Music, both in Budapest. Apart from solo, chamber and orchestral works, several vocal compositions of his (oratorios and choral works) have been performed, and he has also composed for the stage.The Three Liturgical Chants to Latin texts were composed for six-part female choir in 2009. The text of the first piece (Lux aeterna) comes from the mass for the dead, that of the second (Laudate Dominum) from Psalm 116 (117 in many English translations), and that of the third (Adoro te devote) from a hymn by StThomas Aquinas, whose Gregorian chant is also incorporated into the work. The euphony and elaborate part-writing of the Three Liturgical Chants place a serious task before choirs, particularly in terms of intonation. Especially the wide compass of Lux aeterna requires a professional choir.

The catalogues list under the title 'Resignazione' a short work for organ consisting merely of 29 bars. The investigation of sources carried out by the editors in connection with the New Complete Edition of Liszt's Works revealed that this is, in fact a work for piano the final version of which was worked out later. Liszt never published this manuscript and this late masterpiece has remained unknown for scholars as well. The present edition publishes the work for the first time. The publication includes the first version of the work too.

This stand-alone dance piece came from the legacy of Zoltán Kodály as a composition written for piano or for four string instruments. Its first edition was published on the centennial of the composer's birth in 1982 under the care of Ferenc Farkas. Gavotte was most likely composed in the 1950s in addition to its neoclassical tone, the strange melody of the bass-which is often dissonant with harmonies-is reminiscent of the practice of instrumental folk dance music. Gavotte is excellent for music school chamber education and can even be performed in an orchestral arrangement.

'The Rhapsody appears to follow the example of Liszt: it is a bipartite form comprising slow and fast movements (Adagio molto - Allegretto, Allegro), in which a large role is given to the virtuoso, improvisatory passages of the solo instrument, and the inspiration of Romantic Hungarian melodies and rhythms. Bartók wrote the first version for solo piano between October and December 1904. In 1905 Bartók reworked the rhapsody for piano and orchestra, under the title 'Morceau de concert'. Sonnet CIX : for female choir

Commisioned by the municipality of Debrecen.T mea Dragony (b. 1976) started her studies in Ny regyháza as member of the Cantemus choir and graduated in composition at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music under György Orbán, then had been supported for two years by the Academie Musicale de Villecroze (France). She won the 1st Prize of the so-called Pet fi Quodlibet composer competition, and the 2nd Prize of the Arany János competition. Her ballet-music entitled Gyöngyhalászok was presented in the Erkel Theatre, Budapest. In 2017, her cantata Estharangok and orchestral piece Crann Bethadh were premiered at the Liszt Academy, performed by the Hungarian Radio Orchestra.

Between 1917 and 1931 Ottorino Respighi harmonized and instrumented twelve works from the 16th- and 17th-century Italian and French lute literature and arranged the pieces into three 4-movement suites, under the title Antiche danze ed arie. He instrumented the first suite for chamber orchestra, the second for symphony orchestra and the third for strings. He also published six of the twelve movements in a piano arrangement. This publication in the Leggiero series is a 5-movement selection from the three suites, in making this free transcrip-tion, Árpád Pejtsik took account of both the orchestral and the piano versions. The level of difficulty of the works corresponds to thegeneral demands of the series. The viola part may also be played on a third violin.

Two Concert Studies, Ab irato, Morceau de salon : Waldesrauschen, Gnomenreigen

The Two Concert Studies, which Liszt composed in 1863 for Grand Theoretical and Practical Piano School by Sigmund Lebert and Ludwig Stark, became rather popular already in his lifetime.Today they are among the most often played works by Liszt. Morceau de salon is also a publication for piano education and was written for the Méthode des méthodes de piano of François-Joseph Fétis and Ignaz Moscheles and published in 1840. The virtuoso concert study was revised by Liszt under the title Ab irato a decade later. This edition contains the score of and critical notes to the above works as published in the New Liszt Edition, as well as prefaces in English and German, which provideinformation about all the important issues concerning the genesis and performance rendering.

Liebesträume

From 1848 to 1850 Liszt wrote three piano pieces that were published at the end of 1850 under the title Liebesträume - 3 Notturnos. The composition reworks three songs written between 1843 and 1850 which were also published by Kistner in that year. The first two, "Hohe Liebe" and "Gestorben war ich/Seliger Tod," are set to a poem by Ludwig Uhland (1787-1862): a favorite German poet of the 19th century. The third, "O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst!" is set to text by Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810-1876) who was an active poet and translator. Two earlier versions and a later version of Notturno No. 2 were composed from 1845 to 1846, 1848 to 1849, and 1865 respectively. These variousversions are also included in this edition.

This miscellany offers a selection of childhood compositions for piano by Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, R. Strauss and Bartók (written when they were under fourteen). With child composers we generally search in vain for traces of their later characteristic, individual style. They still speak the musical language that they have become familiar with up to that age and therefore, as with the portraits to be found on the title-page it is difficult to determine who is represented in some of them, similarly in the case of most of the pieces the odds are against our guessing who was the composer. It appears that it was dance music in particular that caught theimagination of these brilliantly gifted children, thus the majority of the pieces included in the volume are some kind of dance: minuet, ländler, polonaise, waltz or polka.
