'This music, moving even in its bleakness, is characterised by the complete absence of ornamentation. The arc of all four pieces [1. Adagio, 2. Andante, 3. Poco lento, 4. Assai andante] is similar: after beginning softly they reach a fortissimo climax, then sink back into numbing grief. Only the decidedly important melodic and harmonic elements are heard, pared down, occasionally reinforced with octave doubling. In the Adagio of the Second Piano Concerto Bartók was to return to this peculiar piano instrumentation. The lyricism and Hungarian turns of phrase of the second movement differ a little from the series: he orchestrated it with the title 'Melody' in 1931 as thecentral piece of the five-movement 'Hungarian Sketches'.' Letters from X was composed in 1981, Fax from X in 2003, and For 51 to LI in 2009. Not only the instruments but also the performers - all three works are dedicated to Zoltán Gyöngyössy and István Lukácsházi, and they were the first to perform them - connect the three duos, which were composed with rather long intervals between them. Modern piano playing can be no more reduced to such technical and musical formulas as in the days of Liszt, Czerny or Dohnányi. Two Dirges : for soprano and chamber ensemble to poems by Sándor Weöres

Unusual in Maros's ?uvre are Two Dirges (1962?63) for solo soprano and chamber ensemble, as vocal composition was not a central interest of his. This song cycle with instrumental accompaniment comes right before the great stylistic change found in the Euphonies, and sheds sensitive light on the composing directions he was considering. The cycle, set to verses by Sándor Weöres, recalls ancient rituals, whose musical portrayal is helped by arrestingly strong use of percussion to show the primitive side of such music. Meanwhile the vocal line brings out the melodic traits of Hungarian folk song. (Anna Dalos)

The original version of the piece, Message to Frances Marie, op. 31a was composed for cello solo with two bows for the American cellist Frances Marie Uitti. The subtitle refers to the title of a composition by Charles Ives. The condensed piece of Webernian density which is built upon a homogeneous sequence of chords can be played by three different groups of instruments: A: one cello with two bows, two violins and celesta B: two cellos, two violins and celesta C: two organs and celesta (or upright piano). Written in 1989 the premiere of the work was given at the ISCM Festival in Oslo by F.-M. Uitti, Kjell Arne Jörgensen and Eileen Siegtel in September 25,1990.

József Bloch (1862-1922) was an outstanding figure in violin pedagogy in Hungary. With his violin method entitled A heged játék és tan tási módszere (Violin Playing and How to Teach it) he provided sound theoretical knowledge for future teachers. In addition, his books of scales, violin tutors, and finger exercises contributed to the success of teaching in practice. Bloch placed great emphasis on laying a foundation for instrumental technique and raising it to an artistic level. The present volume contains 40 exercises to help gradually develop finger technique step by step by practising stopping, changing strings, and rapid fingering. The pieces also deal specifically with someproblems of left-hand technique.

Liebesträume

From 1848 to 1850 Liszt wrote three piano pieces that were published at the end of 1850 under the title Liebesträume - 3 Notturnos. The composition reworks three songs written between 1843 and 1850 which were also published by Kistner in that year. The first two, "Hohe Liebe" and "Gestorben war ich/Seliger Tod," are set to a poem by Ludwig Uhland (1787-1862): a favorite German poet of the 19th century. The third, "O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst!" is set to text by Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810-1876) who was an active poet and translator. Two earlier versions and a later version of Notturno No. 2 were composed from 1845 to 1846, 1848 to 1849, and 1865 respectively. These variousversions are also included in this edition.

lines, words, letters... to poems by Parti Nagy fo

This composition written in 2002 has five movements (I: a sort of canon, II: interlude 1, III: (hexameter), IV: interlude 2, V: false copy ). Three of the songs composed to verses by Lajos Parti Nagy examine the structure of the texts. The musical structure in the first song is based on a canon that develops from rotating the lines, in the third song it is based on the rhythms created by splitting words and syllables, in the fifth song it is based on the series of sound effects resulting from completely mixing up the individual letters and sounds. The rigorously structured movements consist of short dramatic episodes, each presenting an unusual life situation (interlude 1,interlude 2). The work, commissioned by Judit Rajk, had its premiere in 2006 in Budapest (Palace of Arts, Festival Theatre).

The original text and their relevant translations have been omitted with the intention that the pedagogical aim, namely that which is achieved through solmization, could be proprely emphasized. Luckily enough, solfeggio has become so wide-spread and in particular singing canons has gained such popularity that its praise would suggest an irony of the same kind as Erasmus' eulogy of foolishness.
