His love of the other finer things in life, namely food and clothes, are also made apparent through the demands he places on his royal chefs (Song ? We Cook And We Bake) and seamstresses (Song ? Measuring And Cutting), who pander to his every whim. However, when required by his financial advisors to discuss important issues of government, he dismisses them, preferring to concentrate on counting his own stash of gold coins! (Song ? So Much Money)The Queen and Princess Marigold are desperate for Midas to be the loving, attentive husband and father he used to be (Song ? Day After Day), and his once-loyal subjects grow angry that their king?s obsession with gold has led to his neglecting them too, and their crumbling city. (Song ? Our Beautiful City) As things go from bad to worse a stranger visits Midas, offering to grant him one wish, in the hope that he will use it to become a wiser and more caring ruler. Although advised by his wise men and family to wish for something for the benefit of everyone (Song ? One Wish), Midas famously asks that everything he touches turns to gold! (Song ? Gold)Delighted with his new powers (Song ? The Golden Touch), he proceeds to gleefully turn every object in his palace and gardens into gold ? even his roses, much to the bewilderment of his gardeners! He nevertheless soon realises that it is more of a curse than a blessing, when he unwittingly touches Princess Marigold and she becomes a golden statue! With nobody daring to come near him (Song ? Beware), a lonely, distraught Midas begs forgiveness from the stranger who granted his wish. After a humiliating bathe in magical waters, the King is relieved of his golden touch, and vows to make amends for his greed and foolishness... much to the relief of everyone! (Song ? (song - Go To London) Down on his luck, young Dick Whittington decides to head for the city, to see if the streets really are paved with gold. However, no sooner has he arrived in London than he realises it's not quite the place of opportunity he thought it would be. (song - This Is London) Exhausted from his journey, he takes a nap on the doorstep of respectable looking house, the owner of which, Mr Fitzwarren, takes pity on Dick and offers him a roof over his head. In exchange for this Dick must work in the house under the comical but mean-spirited cook, butler and maid, who make it their mission to drive Dick to despair. (song - A Recipe For Disaster).To add to his woes, Dick's attic bedroom is overrun each night with rats and mice. (song - Your Furry Friends) This leaves him tired and vulnerable to the domestic staff's bullying. However, he finds a friend in Alice, Mr Fitzwarren's daughter, who promises to keep his tormentors at bay, and advises him that getting a cat might help control his pestilent night visitors. He takes her advice, and with his meagre earnings he buys Puss, a flea-bitten old moggy! They are soon best friends, (song - One Purr-fect Match) and life becomes happier.One day Mr Fitzwarren gathers his household together. He gives them the opportunity to send items on board his trading ship, bound for far-off lands, and the chance to make a good profit. Alice suggests that Dick sends Puss, and reluctantly he agrees. His life in the house soon becomes miserable again, so he decides to run away, but doesn't get very far before he hears the chiming bells of Bow Church. They seem to be telling him to turn back, promising he will one day be Lord Mayor of London! (song - Turn Again, Whittington).Meanwhile, in a distant country, the captain of Mr Fitzwarren' ship is attending a banquet given by the king and queen. (song - She Loves To Shop) Suddenly the palace is swamped by rats and mice, which eat all the food in seconds flat! When the king explains that this happens at every mealtime, the captain tells him he has something in his cargo which might help. At the next hurriedly-arranged banquet, nobody is quite sure what the strange creature is that the captain has brought with him, but they are thrilled to see it deal so effectively with the rats and mice that turn up expecting another easy meal! (song - Go Super-Puss). The captain quickly seizes the opportunity to make some money - a lot of money!Following the ship's return, Mr Fitzwarren again gathers together the members of his household. However, one night a brand new star appears, and they begin an eventful journey which ends with the realisation that some things in life are definitely worth waiting for!Plot summaryFor many long years three wise men, Balthazar, Melchior and Caspar, have been watching the night sky, studying the stars and waiting for them to reveal a sign of great importance. (song ? Stargazing) Not knowing quite what this sign will be, or when they?ll see it, they have become rather impatient ? after all, they are not as young as they used to be!One night, however, far away in a land to the west, a young woman called Mary is visited by an angel. He tells her she will soon bear God a son ? a son who will grow to be a saviour! (song ? The King Of All Kings) Not longer after, the three wise men suddenly see in the sky the sign they have been waiting for! (song ? A Brand New Star) As the heavens come alive with the arrival of a new star, the wise men consult the scriptures and know they must follow it to where a new king will be born. (song ? Saddle Up - part 1) Meanwhile, Mary and her husband-to-be, Joseph, must also leave their home town, and travel to Bethlehem to have their names included in a new register. (song ? Saddle Up - part 2) Little do they all know that their paths are soon to meet!As the star leads them westward, the wise men arrive at the palace of the cruel and selfish King Herod. He and his wife are, as usual, throwing a lavish knees-up for their many hangers-on! (song ? One Big Party) The king and queen are shocked to hear that these visitors are seeking a new baby king, and worry how His birth might affect their extravagant lifestyle! Herod cunningly asks the wise men to find the baby then tell him of His whereabouts, so he too can ?pay his respects?. He is, however, secretly planning to kill Him! In a dream the wise men are warned by angels not to return to tell Herod where the baby is, but to go straight home once they have found Him. (song ? Keep It A Secret)Mary and Joseph have now arrived in Bethlehem. Unable to find a proper room, they must make do with a stable in which to settle down for the night, and as the new star comes to rest overhead, Jesus is born. (song ? Heaven On Earth) Shepherds soon come to visit, bringing the gift of a lamb and worshipping by the manger in which He is lying. Then, just as He opens His eyes, Balthazar, Melchior and Caspar, guided by the star, arrive to greet the new king! They solemnly present the gifts they have brought, explaining the significance of each one. (song ? Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh)Heeding the words of the angels, the wise men head straight home. Although glad to be back, they reflect on the excitement of their journey following the star, and wonder what further adventures lie ahead.
