Written for SATB choir and Organ.The Veil of the Temple was commissioned by the Temple Music Trust. The world premiere took place on 27th June 2003 at the Temple Church, London, performed by the Choir of the Temple Church and the Holst Singers, with Patricia Rozario (soprano), conducted by Stephen Layton, as part of The City of London Festival, 2003.The anthem Mother of God, here I stand was sponsored by the Toulmin Family, and it is dedicated to the Choir of the Temple Church, its Director of Music, Stephen Layton, and the Master of the Temple, the Rev. Robin Griffith-Jones. It was first performed on 13th May 2004, by the Choir of the Temple Church conducted by Stephen Layton.

Michael Nyman: Yamamoto Perpetuo (Flute)

Yamamoto Perpetuo was written by Michael Nyman for solo Violin in 1993 to a commission by fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto for his show that year in Paris. Following its success, Nyman added a second Violin, Viola and Cello to the solo line and turned it into his String Quartet No.4. This arrangement by Andy Findon for solo Flute restores the work as a stand-alone piece for one player in eleven sections, drawing additionally upon material from the quartet version.

Malipiero: Serenata From Sette Canzoni for Tenor Solo with Piano acc.

In 1918-19, Gian Francesco Malipiero wrote a collection of seven songs, commonly known as Sette Canzoni . They were initially intended as a stand-alone work, but became incredibly popular when they were included as the second act of the composer’s opera L’Orfiede . However, in recent years the collection has come to be recognised in its own right as one of the composer’s masterpieces. Like all of the seven songs, the fifth, Serenata , is designed as an individual mini-opera. Scored for a solo Tenor with Piano accompaniment, it tells the story of a young lover serenading his beloved. At the same time, unknown to him, she sits inside lamenting the death of a relative. Serenata has been translated from the original Italian into French by Henry Prunières, and into English by Edwin Evans.

John Tavener: Let Not The Prince Be Silent

This work for unaccompanied double choir (SATBSATB) was commissioned by the Summer Music Society of Dorset. It was first performed in May 1989 at Sherborne Abbey, Dorset, by the Tallis Scholars conducted by Peter Phillips.Tavener:The remarkable text by Clement of Alexandria inspired this piece for double choir. From the stand point of today, when I take a perennialist and therefore universalist stance concerning all the main great religious traditions, this text is very close to my heart, as is also the music. The opening theme sung by the two choirs forms the basis of the whole work. Bold, simple, massive and ecstatic in character, I hope that this work restores something of a Gnostic dimension to Christianity, the loss of which could be said to be one of the greatest tragedies of Christianity in the West.

Composer's Note: Quilting, co-commissioned by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is my first stand alone work for orchestra and is loosely inspired by the American tradition of quilt making. I composed Quilting while living most of last year in Paris. During my time there, I thought a lot about what it means to compose symphonic music as a young American in the 21st century, when so many of the many masterworks which are programmed year in and out by orchestras across the country are European. I considered which artistic traditions defined the American 19th-century. I began to think of the American crafts-tradition of quilting as a foil to the high-art tradition of European orchestral composition. As the score for my new work began to take shape, I started thinking about the manuscript itself as an object, its vertical and horizontal planes create a kind of patterned geometry of their own. Visually the way a musical score is woven together like patchwork brought to mind quilts and the great American tradition of quilting. I imagined about how conducting an orchestra can feel like stitching a piece together, or sewing together a large number of musical ideas and musicians into a coherent and transcendent whole. Quilting was an integral part of American vernacular in the 18th and 19th centuries, the African-American quilting tradition is especially fascinating, and the quilts tell the stories of the women and communities who made them. The names of the quilt patterns themselves can have their own sense of narrative: 'jacobs ladder', 'drunkards path', 'solomon's puzzle', and (my favorite for its relevance to this piece) 'the road to California.' - Bryce Dessner
