Kevin Volans: Akrodha For Solo Percussion

Commissioned by the Swedish Concert Institute. The title of this work - Akrodha - is a Sanskrit word meaning "Freedom from Anger". The piece was written without any conscious system whatsoever and consists of two movements, to both of which the title applies: the first being in a state of high energy and the second being in a state of lower energy. The work lasts approximately 26 minutes and is dedicated to the soloist, Jonny Axelsson.

The Seven Heavens - The Life Of C.S. Lewis In The Planets Of The Middle Ages is a work by James Whitbourn for SATB Chorus and Orchestra. The piece was commissioned by the Belfast Philharmonic Society on the occasion of their 140th Anniversary Season 2014-5, and first performed in the Ulster Hall on 30th May 2015 by Belfast Philharmonic Choir. The work lasts around 31 minutes and this is the Vocal Score . This Vocal Score is compatible with both the Orchestral version and the Chamber Ensemble version. The libretto is a "musical portrait of C.S. Lewis", viewed through the lens of the seven heavens of the pre-Copernican model of the solar system, in which Lewis had a deep interest. The seven movements follow these seven planets, which also correspond to the days of the week, telling the story of Lewis's life. The text itself is drawn from a variety of sources, including the Orphic hymns, Psalms, Shakespeare, Shelley, C.S. Lewis himself, and others.

Composer's Notes:The last few years I have become increasingly involved in some peculiar mathematical formulas called "fractals". These formulas, used in the fast growing field of "Chaos theory", are relatively simple, but they generate fascinating and surprisingly "organic" patterns when shown graphically on a computer screen, or played as music.One should think that such a mathematical approach would lead to sterile and 'theoretical' music. The sound world of Stonewave, however, is not one you would associate with math books. The steady, insistent pulse, and the use of sequences put squarely up against each other or divided by long rests suggest an invisible ritual. A ritual for what? Well then, let it be a ritual for the exorcism of some 'evil spirits' which now ride our part of the world under the name of Liberalism, making people the servants of the Market Forces instead of vice versa. Stonewave is therefore an incantation, as it seems that only divine forces can save European culture from a political system that proclaims the Jungle Law as the guiding principle in social and cultural life. Walk-Sonata

For solo violin. The original music Walk for one dancer and violinist was commissioned by Compagnie Trans. The four pieces that compose this sonata are from the performance piece Laurence Marthouret choreographed for a dancer anda violinist, entitled Walk, and interpreted by Sona Khochafian in 2001. The project originated from a shared conception of the two art forms, an equal collaboration between choreographic and musical composition. Its central ideawas to utilize Laban’s choreographic notation system, which accompanies and parallels the musical notation, allowing for an extreme precision in the playing out of the dance-music relationship. Largely cut and recomposed to arriveat this concert version, Walk-Sonata still maintains its four discreet parts, the four sides of a square of the choreographic composition and is therefore strongly linked to the original choreography. This is discernible not onlyin the formal four movement structure, but also in the music's multiple rhythms, dynamics and phrasing, which are consistently, if not tightly, joined to the dance gesture. Walk-Sonata is dedicated to Sona Khochafian and LaurenceMarthouret.

Kevin Volans: Chakra For Three Percussionists

Commissioned by Sisu with the assistance of the Arts Council of Ireland and the Fond for lyd og bilde, Oslo.Written for Sisu.Each player has 8 drums played with sticks (one high set and one lower set) chosen for their non-ethnic sound quality, and 1 bass drum played with a footpedal. The drums should be tuned in equal steps of roughly a tone apart, each set of drums (starting with the highest set of player 1) being roughly a tone lower than the one above, so that all the drums notated on the second lowest line of the stave (for example) should have the same pitch. The drums should be tuned in a scale of equal steps, each slightly smaller than a whole tone. There should be no minor thirds, if possible. The higher set of 4 drums are notated in the spaces and should be roughly equivalent to rototoms or bongos, the lower set is notated on the lines of the stave and should be roughly equivalent to tom-toms or congas. The bass drum is notated at the bottom of the stave with stems facing downwards.
