Nigel Tuffs: The Beginner Guitarist - Book 3

The Beginner Guitarist has been born out of 20 years of teaching experience. Although specifically designed as a teacher?s aid, it can also be used for independent study.Topics like posture, tuning and phrasing are not prescribed, being left to the judgement of the teacher. With the exception of right and left-hand fingering advice, this approach is used throughout the series. The entire series has the goal of being a measured and progressive tutor. Ideas are usually introduced one at a time to avoid overloading the student.Book Three places strong emphasis on right-hand technique with the freestroke (tirando) to the fore - thumb and fingers together - while consolidating and building on the notes learnt in first position across the six strings. It also takes a brief look at an alternative tuning and introduces the idea of shifting position. Chords are also given further attention while the introduction of some classic studies from past masters is juxtaposed with a 1970s-style pentatonic-based piece introducing the idea of playing riffs.A set of exercises on dotted notes and a strong selection of pieces complete this volume.About the author: Nigel Tuffs is an instrumental teacher with more than 20 years of experience in all areas of guitar teaching. Originally a member of several rock bands he completed an honours degree at the Colchester Institute, specialising in composition and performance, and has since worked extensively as a chamber musician, in guitar ensembles, as an accompanist and also as an educator.

Richard Reed Parry: Quartet For Heart And Breath (For String Quartet)

Richard Reed Parry: Quartet For Heart And Breath (For String Quartet)

Richard Reed Parry 's Quartet For Heart And Breath is an innovative and original piece based on the performers' own bodily rhythms. This sheet music is for String Quartet (Violin/Violin/Viola/Cello). Richard Reed Parry is familiar to millions as the lead singer of rock band Arcade Fire, yet his foray into classical music is equally worthy of attention. Quartet For Heart And Breath is an experiment into using the performers' heartbeats and breathing to dictate the tempo. The performers are instructed to wear stethoscopes in order to listen to their heartbeats closely, while one complete breath corresponds to one bar and two heartbeats equal two crotchets. The result is a quiet and subtle piece, as each instrument has to play softly so as to be able to keep in time. The piece also has a naturally occurring dynamism in that the players' heart rates constantly change as the performance goes on, with each instrument falling in and out of sync sometimes culminating in a beautiful moment of all heartbeats matching each other. Interestingly, this unique aspect means that no performance will ever be the same, meaning to hear or play this composition will be a truly once in a lifetime experience. Quartet For Heart And Breath is a superbly one-of-a-kind composition by Richard Reed Parry . Commissioned by the Kronos Quartet, this piece makes for a wonderfully distinctive performance, with fascinating implications for the connection between the music and the body.

Nigel Tuffs: The Beginner Guitarist - Book 1

The Beginner Guitarist has been born out of 20 years of teaching experience. Although specifically designed as a teacher?s aid, it can also be used for independent study.Topics like posture, tuning and phrasing are not prescribed, being left to the judgement of the teacher. With the exception of right and left-hand fingering advice, this approach is used throughout the series. The entire series has the goal of being a measured and progressive tutor. Ideas are usually introduced one at a time to avoid overloading the student. Basic right-hand technique is the foundation of the early part of Book One. The ability to strike the string effectively and produce a clear sound is paramount. Left-hand technique is then addressed with notes on the top three strings in first position. Use of the thumb is also covered briefly. Light relief comes in the form of small amounts of glissando and percussive work. Dynamics are then introduced onto a stable base of notes, followed by accidentals (key of G). The book is rounded off with chords and arpeggios, giving the student a chance to ?swap seats? with the teacher and play the role of accompanist. Elsewhere the teacher may accompany the pupil with the suggested chords, either playing the root note or the full voicings as notated. A daily practice session for the completion of book one, extra repertoire and other helpful information are all available at www.thebeginnerguitarist.com.About the author: Nigel Tuffs is an instrumental teacher with more than 20 years of experience in all areas of guitar teaching. Ideas are usually introduced one at a time to avoid overloading the student.Book Two aims to build on solid right and left-hand techniques and covers further progress in notation recognition. It begins with the introduction of quavers (eighth notes) and further focus on the free stroke (tirando). This is balanced with the need to keep the rest stroke (apoyando) solid by giving the pupil a chance to play both melody and accompanying parts.Extensive exercises for finger 4, via chords and melody, are included but the main aim is to complete the learning of the notes in first position, taking in several scales and modes along the way. Simple open chords are also given further attention and the book concludes with coverage of chromaticism relating to the bottom three strings.A daily practice session for the completion of book two, extra repertoire and other helpful information are all available at www.thebeginnerguitarist.com.About the author: Nigel Tuffs is an instrumental teacher with more than 20 years of experience in all areas of guitar teaching.
