The girls’ choir, a part of the Spatzen Choir, presents a selection of favorite pieces from the choral collection Weihnachtslieder für Sopran- und Altstimmen [Carus 2.135] which is being published at the same time. Here well-known and lesser-known works are paired, classical pieces stand side by side with gospel, or the unusual appears next to pieces with catchy melodies.

When it comes to paying tribute to Heinrich Schütz’s compositional achievement, in his art his treatment of the text and language must be mentioned first. The Geistliche Chor-Music 1648, a collection of 29 motets for five to seven voices and one of his most important works, is characterized by he carefully thought-out musical realization of the meaning of the text. In his detailed foreword to the collection the composer presented these as models for composition without a basso continuo it was his conviction that very young composer should obtain the properfoundation for a good counterpoint. Despite the strict counterpoint, stylistically speaking from an earlier era, theMusicus poeticus imbued his workswith a strongly expressive character. The individual motets are structured differently and they differ - according to content - in their length and character. Short, rather straightforward pieces stand alongside long, worked-out pieces with greater expressive intensity, and cheerful, optimistic works are juxtaposed with plaintive ones. Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber : Vesperae longiores ac breviores

Not later than his appointment as Court Music Director of the Archbishop of Salzburg in 1684 did the composition of sacred vocal music become an official obligation for Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber [1644 1704]. Today his extensive sacred works stand somewhat in the shadow of his instrumental music [perhaps with the exception of the Missa Salisburgenis] and this although many of the treasured stylistic elements of his instrumental music can also be found in his masses, psalm settings and vespers. Thus the litany Vesperae longiores ac breviores, is characterized by the striking virtuoso use of both violins. In a live production Simon Carrington, co-founder of the famous King’sSingers, and the Yale Schola Cantorum have made this intimately scored, yet grandiose work known and accessible to the music lovers and enthusiasts. It shows Biber at the height of his creative powers. On the present recording the Vesper is complimented by vocal and instrumental music of Rupert Ignaz Mayr [1646 1712] and Giovanni Legrenzi [1620 1690], two of Biber’s well-known contemporaries.

“Heinrich Schütz The complete recording”: In the coming year a recording of the complete works of Heinrich Schütz under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann will be released on the Carus label. Together with the Dresdner Kammerchor and many renowned soloists these works, true to historical performance practice, will be presented. The Carus recording of Schütz’s “Geistliche Chor-Music 1648”, which was first released in 2007 and was awarded the Pizzicato Supersonic Award, initiates the series.
