Voll Freud und Leid. Ausgewählte Lieder
2011 marks the 200th anniversary of Franz Liszt, whose work, in its importance, has still not received the widespread appreciation it deserves. After all, he is among those composers who made a lasting change in the musical culture of the 19th century. For example, among the most woefully neglected genre of his oeuvre are his lied compositions even though for Liszt the lied offered him ample room for musical experimentation. Often the mood of the text is rendered precisely by varied rhythms and daring harmonies. Thus in the setting of the “Loreley” text by Heinrich Heine he even anticipated Wagner’s Tristan harmony. The tenor Hans Mammel and his accompanist, Hilko Dumno, discover on the present recording Franz Liszt as a highly interesting lied composer.
