Exile as a Continuum in Joseph Conrad’s Fiction Living in Translation

Exile as a Continuum in Joseph Conrad’s Fiction Living in Translation

Joseph Conrad is famous for being an unusual strange and even eccentric English writer. However despite his difference English criticism has primarily interpreted his fiction from the perspective of the English culture. In turn Polish criticism has portrayed Conrad as a Pole who happened to write in English. Considering Conrad’s transcultural background neither exclusively English nor an exclusively Polish writer this volume investigates the essential features of his expatriate writing as a form distinctly different from any writing done within a single culture. Conrad's unique contribution to English literature and sensibility stems from his ability to incorporate the complexity of the exilic condition without discussing it explicitly. Furthermore this book establishes Conrad's expatriation archetypes and examines them as they manifest themselves not only in a realistic but more importantly in a symbolic mode. Those archetypal features demonstrate themselves through Conrad’s thematic choices narrative structure and critical discourse that reflect his complex relationship with both the parent and the adopted reader. While the existence of these patterns in Conrad's fiction are not entirely obvious this book aims to illuminate Conrad’s contributions to the current critical debate concerning the place of the author in his/her own narrative. | Exile as a Continuum in Joseph Conrad’s Fiction Living in Translation

Reexamining Racism Sexism and Identity Taxation in the Academy

Reexamining Racism Sexism and Identity Taxation in the Academy

This book explores the diversity-related labour that marginalized faculty students and staff are expected to perform because of their social identities – i. e. “identity taxation” in US higher education institutions. It compiles new research on cultural and identity taxation to highlight how systemic racism and patriarchy perpetuate identity taxation in 21st century US academe. Amado Padilla coined the term “cultural taxation” nearly 30 years ago to outline the expectations that faculty of colour address diversity affairs on their campuses. In this insightful volume Laura Hirshfield and Tiffany Joseph expand the concept adopting the term “identity taxation” to accentuate the labour members of marginalized groups participate in due to their intersectional identities. Beyond bringing these terms into conversation with others highlighting marginalized academics’ experience this volume empirically explores how identity taxation affects students and staff not just the faculty who were the focus of previous scholarship. It provides insight into the consequences of taxation at a moment when change and dismantling structural racism is most needed in universities and society. Reexamining Racism Sexism and Identity Taxation in the Academy will be a key resource for academics researchers and advanced students of race and ethnic studies education research methods sociology and cultural studies. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

Allied Air Attacks and Civilian Harm in Italy 1940–1945 Bombing among Friends

Allied Air Attacks and Civilian Harm in Italy 1940–1945 Bombing among Friends

Tens of thousands of Italian civilians perished in the Allied bombing raids of World War II. More of them died after the Armistice of September 1943 than before when the air attacks were intended to induce Italy’s surrender. Allied Air Attacks and Civilian Harm in Italy 1940–1945 addresses this seeming paradox by examining the views of Allied political and military leaders Allied air crews and Italians on the ground. It tells the stories of a little-known diplomat (Myron Charles Taylor) military strategist (Solly Zuckerman) resistance fighter (Aldo Quaranta) and peace activist (Vera Brittain) – architects and opponents of the bombing strategies. It describes the fate of ordinary civilians drawing on a wealth of local and digital archival sources memoir accounts novels and films including Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 and John Huston’s The Battle of San Pietro. The book will be of interest to readers concerned about the ethical legal and human dimensions of bombing and its effects on civilians to students of military strategy and Italian history and to World War II buffs. They will benefit from a people-focused history that draws on a range of eclectic and rarely used sources in English and Italian. Femininity and the Physically Active Woman

Femininity and the Physically Active Woman

The fitness boom of the last two decades has led to many people incorporating exercise into their lifestyles through activities such as jogging and aerobics. However whilst many physical and psychological health benefits have been documented far too few people actually take part in enough exercise to glean significant improvements and this is much more a problem for women than men. Femininity and the Physically Active Woman explores one reason many women offer for their lack of involvement in sport and exercise - that they are not the 'sporty' type. Precilla Y. L. Choi argues that the 'sporty' type is masculine and to determine how this notion might affect women's self-perceptions she critically examines the experiences of women athletes bodybuilders recreational exercisers and girls' physical education. What emerges is the importance of visible differences between women and men in terms of muscularity strength and agility in order to maintain the gender order. Thus if a girl or woman wishes to play the masculine game of sport she must do so in conformity with a number of patriarchal rules which ensure she is first and foremost recognised as a heterosexual feminine being. Contributing to a psychology of the physically active woman by examining women's experiences from critical feminist and gendered perspectives Femininity and the Physically Active Woman will be of great interest to students researchers practitioners and teachers from a range of disciplines. Precilla Y. L. Choi is the British Association for the Advancement of Science's Joseph Lister Lecturer for 2000. She has co-edited with Paula Nicolson Female Sexuality (Prentice Hall).

Essays On Entrepreneurs Innovations Business Cycles and the Evolution of Capitalism

Essays On Entrepreneurs Innovations Business Cycles and the Evolution of Capitalism

Ordinarily the word essays is invoked at great risk by authors and publishers alike. But in the case of this special collection by Joseph A. Schumpeter the great Austrian economist who finally settled at Harvard the scholarly world knows this particular volume as his Essays. For a less pious younger generation a subtitle has been added describing what these essays are about. In addition to the major themes of Schumpeter's life: the place of the entrepreneur in economic development the risks and rewards of innovation business cycles and why they occur and the evolution of capitalism in Europe and America the Essays contain statements on how Schumpeter viewed his own development; they discuss how he looked at Marxism and how he feared that economics was in danger of becoming too ideological. Several of the Essays are classics. This is the case for The Creative Response in Economic History in which Schumpeter makes a plea for the close cooperation between economic theory and economic history. Another is Science and Ideology which constitutes Schumpeter's presidential address before the American Economic Association. Finally there is the intriguing preface to the Japanese translation of Theory of Economic Development in which Schumpeter names Walras and Marx as his two great predecessors. Even those who treasure the original publication were irritated by the remarkably poor quality of much of the book which reproduced everything from typewriter script to nearly unreadable reduced double columns. These lapses have been corrected in this new edition. Here Schumpeter's Essays can finally be read with the enjoyment no lesS than enlightenment they deserve. The volume is alive to the basic issues of our time. The reader can look forward to intellectual insight and stimuli of the highest order. | Essays On Entrepreneurs Innovations Business Cycles and the Evolution of Capitalism

Anarchism as Political Philosophy

Anarchism as Political Philosophy

Reports of people rejecting political authority assaulting it with words and often violent acts are actions that are part of modern life. Anarchism has been considered a dead movement of the nineteenth and early twentieth century but it assumed a renewed and substantial relevance in the late twentieth century. Robert Hoffman points out in his incisive Introduction that anarchists have always been viewed either as foolish idealists or at the other extreme as serious threats to justice and social tranquility. But the editor argues most anarchists have been ordinary people who have shared a singular passion for what they believe to be a just society. To clarify widespread misconceptions about anarchism this volume offers a lively debate on the subject consisting of works by both advocates of anarchism and people who take it seriously but reject it. Represented here in the writings of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon Leo Tolstoy George Bernard Shaw Bertrand Russell and others are different types styles and periods of anarchist writing reflecting a rich variety of thought arising from the anarchist perspective. The essays deal with many of the different strands of anarchists including anarchist attacks on democracy patriotism and military conscription and provide an outline of the movement's tumultuous history. Against these are set pieces that argue anarchism's impossibility and estimate its relevance to social change. The debate format of Anarchism introduces the reader to a fresh perspective and understanding of vital issues of political and social theory and provokes him to examine his own thinking. Looking at both sides of the controversy this volume discourages unquestioning or over-confident opinions. Although the anarchist credo that man can live without government is difficult or impossible for most people to accept as long as we find it difficult to live within the framework of government control the influence and potential appeal of anarchist thought will continue to be felt. | Anarchism as Political Philosophy

Guidebook for Systems Applications in Astrobiology

Guidebook for Systems Applications in Astrobiology

This book addresses the timely subject of systems applications in astrobiology. It demonstrates how astrobiology – a multidisciplinary interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary field of science – can benefit from adopting the systems approach. Astrobiology draws upon its founding sciences such as astronomy physics chemistry biochemistry geology and planetary sciences. However astrobiologists can encounter difficulties working across these fields. The systems approach we believe is the best contemporary approach to consider astrobiology holistically. The approach is currently used in other fields such as engineering which uses systems analysis routinely. Such an approach needs to be learned both in principle and through examples from the field. This book features chapters from experts across the field of astrobiology who have applied the systems approach. It will be a valuable guide for astrobiology students at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels in addition to researchers in the field both in academia and the space industry. Key Features: Offers a unique and novel approach to studying and understanding astrobiology Encourages astrobiologists to apply a holistic systems approach to their work rather than being bogged down in details Imparts practical knowledge to readers which can be adopted in different research and job opportunities in the field of astrobiology Vera M. Kolb obtained degrees in chemical engineering and organic chemistry from Belgrade University Serbia and earned her PhD in organic chemistry from Southern Illinois University Carbondale Illinois United States.
