Designing Quality Authentic Assessments

Designing Quality Authentic Assessments

This book examines the principles and practice of authentic assessment. It seeks to answer the following questions. What is authentic assessment? How is authentic assessment different from 'performance assessment' or 'alternative assessment'? How can authentic assessment support learner-centred education especially when a performance-oriented culture favours pen-and-paper examinations? The book is structured into two major parts. The first 'Principles of authentic assessment design' provides readers with a conceptual explanation of authenticity; the principles for designing quality authentic assessments for valid evidence of student learning; and guidance about how to develop quality rubrics to structure assessment tasks. The second part of the book 'Theory into practice' provides examples developed by teachers to demonstrate an understanding of authentic assessment. The subject areas covered include humanities languages mathematics sciences character and citizenship. Two case studies are discussed to demonstrate how authentic assessment can be used to comprehensively address key learning objectives in a variety of curriculum contexts. This book provides practitioners with concrete examples on how to develop authentic assessment to suit their context and also enhance their students’ learning. The book will also enable teachers to face assessment challenges present in our changing world. Texas The Lone Star State

Lone Star Tarnished A Critical Look at Texas Politics and Public Policy

Lone Star Tarnished A Critical Look at Texas Politics and Public Policy

Texas pride like everything else in the state is larger than life. So too perhaps are the state’s challenges. Lone Star Tarnished approaches public policy in the nation’s most populous red state from historical comparative and critical perspectives. The historical perspective provides the scope for asking how various policy domains have developed in Texas history. In each chapter Cal Jillson compares Texas public policy choices and results with those of other states and the United States in general. Finally the critical perspective allows readers to question the balance of benefits and costs attendant to what is often referred to as the Texas way or the Texas model and to assess the many claims of Texas’s exceptionalism. Through Jillson’s lively and lucid prose students are well equipped to analyse how Texas has done and is doing compared to selected states and the national average over time and today. This text is aimed at students and professors of Texas politics who want to stress history political culture and public policy. New to the Fourth Edition Fully updated to include the most recent Texas elections and political events Covers the 2019 legislative session Highlights new population data with projections forward to 2050 recently released by the U. S. Census and the Texas State Data Center. Explores the dramatic increases in Texas oil and gas production and their impact on global and U. S. prices and on the profitability and the viability of many Texas producers in light of the recent plunge in prices. A Leader’s Guide to Storytelling Restoring Authentic Communication in a World of Change

Part manual part memoir and part call to action this book demonstrates why the core skill needed by leaders in the next decade and into the future will be authentic and effective communication. Communications based on character integrity and values will be critical in helping leaders navigate the two mega trends of accelerated technological change and increasing demands for social change. This book is the first to marry practical advice on deepening communication skills with insight from a coaching and cognitive point of view into what techniques works and why and to pull together the wider societal issues and the operating context for leaders. Counter-intuitive and written to provoke thought and awareness the author looks at the psychological and emotional effects of our communications and what leaders can do to inspire and engage guiding them through three sections: • A framework for effective communications • A toolkit detailing what good looks like in practical situations • The authentic leader an exploration of the changing communications landscape and why a different kind of leadership is needed C-suite executives leaders about to take that last step into the C-suite or millennial leaders about to enter the boardroom will value this book as an advisory guide as a handbook to be used in internal coaching and training sessions and as a manual and aide memoir for themselves. | A Leader’s Guide to Storytelling Restoring Authentic Communication in a World of Change

Leadership in the Construction Industry Developing Authentic Leaders in a Dynamic World

Leadership in the Construction Industry Developing Authentic Leaders in a Dynamic World

This book presents a new framework for leadership in the construction industry which draws from the authentic leadership construct. The framework has three major themes: self-leadership self-transcendent leadership and sustainable leadership. Despite its significance leadership has not been given due importance in the construction industry as focus is placed on managerial functionalism. At the project level even with the technological advances in the industry in recent years construction is realized in the form of people undertaking distinct interdependent activities which require effective leadership. The industry faces many challenges including: demanding client requirements and project parameters; more stringent regulations codes and systems; intense competition in the industry; and threats from disruptive enterprise. In such a complex environment technology-driven and tool-based project and corporate management is insufficient. It must be complemented by a strategic genuine stakeholder-focused and ethical leadership. Leadership in the Construction Industry is based on a study on authentic leadership and its development in Singapore. Leadership theories and concepts are reviewed; the importance of leadership in the construction industry is discussed; and the grounded theory approach which was applied in the study is explained. Many eminent construction professionals in Singapore were interviewed in the field study. Emerging from the experiences of the leaders documented in this book are three major themes: (1) self-leadership: how leaders engage in various self-related processes such as self-awareness self-regulation and role modeling. (2) self-transcendent leadership: how leaders go beyond leading themselves to leading others through servant leadership shared leadership spiritual leadership and socially-responsible leadership; and finally (3) sustainable leadership or the strategies leaders employ to make the impact of their leadership lasting. A synthesis of these themes and their implications for leadership development is presented before the book concludes with some recommendations for current and aspiring leaders about how they can engage with them. This book is essential reading for all construction practitioners from all backgrounds; and researchers on leadership and management in construction. | Leadership in the Construction Industry Developing Authentic Leaders in a Dynamic World

Straight Skin Gay Masks and Pretending to be Gay on Screen

Straight Skin Gay Masks and Pretending to be Gay on Screen

Straight Skin Gay Masks and Pretending to Be Gay on Screen examines cinematic depictions of pretending-to-be-gay assessing performances that not only reflect heteronormative and explicitly homophobic attitudes but also offer depictions of gay selfhood with more nuanced multidirectional identifications. The case of straight protagonists pretending to be gay on screen is the ideal context in which to study unanticipated progressivity and dissidence in regard to cultural construction of human sexualities in the face of theatricalized epistemological collapse. Teasing apart the dynamics of depictions of both sexual stability and fluidity in cinematic images of men pretending to be gay offers new insights into such salient issues as sexual vulnerability and dynamics and long-term queer visibility in a politically complicated mass culture which is mostly produced in a heteronormative and even hostile cultural environment. Additionally this book initially examines queer uses of sexuality masquerade in Alternate Gay World Cinema that allegorically features a world pretending to be gay in which straights are harassed and persecuted in order to expose the tragic consequences of sexual intolerance. Films and TV series examined as part of the analysis include The Gay Deceivers Victor/Victoria Happy Texas William Friedkin’s Cruising and many other straight and gay screens. This is a fascinating and important study relevant to students and researchers in Film Studies Media Studies Gender Studies Queer Studies Sexuality Studies Communication Studies and Cultural Studies. | Straight Skin Gay Masks and Pretending to be Gay on Screen

Leading with Compassion How to Make Leadership Authentic by Managing with Integrity

Leading with Compassion How to Make Leadership Authentic by Managing with Integrity

Business schools teach the transactional tools one needs to work in business. They teach various strategic planning and decision-making models such as SPACE or SWOT or decision trees or weighted grids. They teach about the various functions of an organization financial ratios and breakeven analyses. And they may even have a class on business ethics. But those tools are more about knowing where the business-case boundaries are as a risk prevention measure and do not help one to think about how they should comport themselves as a leader. This book is about helping you to become your best self and helping those around you to achieve their best. Inherently it’s about authenticity integrity and empathy and how these simple traits can lead to high performance. The book explores ways to make our leadership more authentic and to lead with integrity. It discusses how to mentor employees and how this can lead to higher-performing teams and more successful organizations. The book is organized around four major constructs. The first is about personal leadership. It starts with honesty and integrity. That provides the basis for an empathetic leadership style. This is one that helps to engage followers and brings them along because they want to come along for the journey rather than feeling forced. That is the nature of the second construct: building and maintaining high-performing teams. This is then the basis for building a trusting culture. Change is all around us and that can be exhausting. Building a culture of trust is the first step toward building an agile organizational culture. That is the third construct. Finally the last is a message of simple optimism. There are many challenges facing society today but with thoughtful engaging leaders there is hope that we can collectively rise to the challenge. | Leading with Compassion How to Make Leadership Authentic by Managing with Integrity
