Routledge International Handbook of Critical Gang Studies

Routledge International Handbook of Critical Gang Studies

Routledge International Handbook of Critical Gang Studies is rooted in the instability inequality and liquidity of the post-industrial era. It understands the gang as a complex and contradictory phenomenon; a socio-historical agent that reflects responds to and creates a certain structured environment in spaces which are always in flux. International in scope and drawing on a range of sociological criminological and anthropological traditions it looks beyond pathological ahistorical and non-transformative approaches and considers other important factors that produce the phenomenon whether the historically entrenched racialized power structure and segregation in Chicago; the unconstrained state-abandoned development of favelas in Brazil; or the colonization displacement and dependency of people in Central America. This handbook reflects and defines the new theoretical and empirical traditions of critical gang studies. It offers a variety of perspectives including: A view of gangs that takes into consideration the global context and appearance of the gang in its various forms and stages of development; An appreciation of the gang as a socio-cultural formation; A race-ethnic and class analysis of the gang that problematizes domain assumptions such as the underclass; Gender variations of the gang phenomenon with a particular emphasis on their intersectional properties; Relations between gangs and the political economy that address the dominant mode of production and exchange; Treatments that demonstrate the historically contingent nature of gangs and their changes across time; The contradictory impact of gang repressive policies institutions and practices as part of a broader discussion on the nature of the state in specific societies; and Critical methodologies on gangs that involve discussions of visual and textual representations and the problematics of data collection and analysis. Authoritative multi-disciplinary and international this book will be of interest to criminologists sociologists and anthropologists alike particularly those engaged with critical criminology/sociology youth crime delinquency and global social inequality. Gangs and Youth Subcultures International Explorations

Gangs and Youth Subcultures International Explorations

Gangs are growing in many different social economic and political environments coupled with an alarming breakdown of public order. Failures to contain or reduce gang crime in European Asian South American African and North American cities may be symptoms of fundamental problems threatening the fabric of many societies. The spread of gangs to suburbia and remote locations is a palpable worldwide threat. But despite nearly a century of scholarly inquiry into street gangs and youth subcultures no single work systematically reflects on comparative international experiences with gangs. Gangs and Youth Subcultures takes up this challenge. Kayleen Hazlehurst and Cameron Hazlehurst argue that theories of gang behavior in immigrant communities and the influence of transnational crime syndicates are better tested in more than one host society. Similar phenomena would be better understood if placed in a comparative context. To this purpose the editors assembled expert scholars and policy advisers from North America Europe South Africa and Australasia. Gangs and Youth Subculture lays the groundwork for an explanation of why gangs continue to grow in strength and influence and why they have spread to remote locations. Kayleen Hazlehurst and Cameron Hazlehurst present new findings and innovative preventive strategies in a clear concise fashion. No other work brings together experts on gangs and youth subcultures from so many countries. As such this trailblazing book will interest scholars and teachers of criminology and sociology justice system administrators as well as law enforcement officers and youth workers internationally. | Gangs and Youth Subcultures International Explorations

Civilian Participants in the Cultural Revolution Being Vulnerable and Being Responsible

Civilian Participants in the Cultural Revolution Being Vulnerable and Being Responsible

In the ten years of the Cultural Revolution political persecutions violation of rights deprivation of freedom violence and brutality were daily occurrences. Especially striking is the huge number of ordinary civilians who were involved in inflicting pain and suffering on their comrades colleagues friends neighbors and even family members. The large-scale and systematic form of violence and injustice that was witnessed differs from that in countries like Chile under military rule or South Africa during apartheid in that such acts were largely committed by ordinary people instead of officials in uniforms. Mok asks how we should assess the moral responsibility of these wrongdoers if any for the harm they did both voluntarily and involuntarily. After the death of Chairman Mao there was a trial of the Gang of Four who were condemned as the chief perpetrators of the Cultural Revolution. Besides tens of millions of officials and cadres who were wrongly accused and unfairly treated were subsequently cleared and reinstated under the new leadership. However justice has not yet been fully done because no legal or political mechanism has ever been established for the massive number of civilian perpetrators to answer for all sorts of violence inflicted on other civilians to make peace with their victims and to make amends. The numerous civilians who participated need to come to terms with the people they wronged in those turbulent years. Justice in general and transitional justice in particular may still be pursued by taking the first steps to clarify and identify the moral burden and responsibility that may legitimately be ascribed to the various types of participant. This book will be of interest to anyone who studies the Cultural Revolution of China especially those who are concerned with the ethical dimension. | Civilian Participants in the Cultural Revolution Being Vulnerable and Being Responsible

International Migration and Citizenship Today

International Migration and Citizenship Today

This completely revised and updated textbook explores the moral economic political and cultural dimensions of the movement of people across international borders. In style and substance it is designed to spark thoughtful discussions and to challenge readers to draw their own conclusions to questions such as how should democracies balance the rights of immigrants with those of citizens? What exactly constitutes persecution and how should we define a refugee? How should democracies allocate citizenship? Can and should a distinction be made between voluntary and forced migration and does one group of migrants deserve admission more than the other? What does a reasonable border policy look like? The rise of populism the vote for Brexit and the unprecedented flow of refugees around the world are all evidence that these questions remain highly salient controversial and unresolved. The content has been thoroughly updated to cover: • Migration into Europe since 2015. • Climate change as a driver of migration and the concept of environmental refugees. • Unaccompanied minors fleeing gang violence asylum for victims of domestic violence family separation policies and the building of a wall on the U. S. /Mexican border. • The controversies surrounding the Danish cartoons Charlie Hebdo and hijabs as examples of the tensions in liberal democracies between free speech individual freedom religious expressions and minority rights. • The Dream Act and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). • Demographic shifts and the debates around multiculturalism and diversity. • Guest-worker programs as alternatives to admitting immigrants. Intended as the main text for undergraduate classes on international migration the book will also appeal to broad survey courses on world politics comparative politics international relations global history and more specialized courses on human rights citizenship and nationalism. | International Migration and Citizenship Today
