Compliant Mechanisms Design of Flexure Hinges

Compliant Mechanisms Design of Flexure Hinges

With a rigorous and comprehensive coverage the second edition of Compliant Mechanisms: Design of Flexure Hinges provides practical answers to the design and analysis of devices that incorporate flexible hinges. Complex-shaped flexible-hinge mechanisms are generated from basic elastic segments by means of a bottom-up compliance (flexibility) approach. The same compliance method and the classical finite element analysis are utilized to study the quasi-static and dynamic performances of these compliant mechanisms. This book offers easy-to-use mathematical tools to investigate a wealth of flexible-hinge configurations and two- or three-dimensional compliant mechanism applications. FEATURES Introduces a bottom-up compliance-based approach to characterize the flexibility of new and existing flexible hinges of straight- and curvilinear-axis configurations Develops a consistent linear lumped-parameter compliance model to thoroughly describe the quasi-static and dynamic behavior of planar/spatial serial/parallel flexible-hinge mechanisms Utilizes the finite element method to analyze the quasi-statics and dynamics of compliant mechanisms by means of straight- and curvilinear-axis flexible-hinge elements Covers miscellaneous topics such as stress concentration yielding and related maximum load precision of rotation of straight- and circular-axis flexible hinges temperature effects on compliances layered flexible hinges and piezoelectric actuation/sensing Offers multiple solved examples of flexible hinges and flexible-hinge mechanisms. This book should serve as a reference to students researchers academics and anyone interested to investigate precision flexible-hinge mechanisms by linear model-based methods in various areas of mechanical aerospace or biomedical engineering as well as in robotics and micro-/nanosystems. | Compliant Mechanisms Design of Flexure Hinges

Rivals in the Gulf Yusuf al-Qaradawi Abdullah Bin Bayyah and the Qatar-UAE Contest Over the Arab Spring and the Gulf Crisis

Rivals in the Gulf Yusuf al-Qaradawi Abdullah Bin Bayyah and the Qatar-UAE Contest Over the Arab Spring and the Gulf Crisis

Rivals in the Gulf: Yusuf al-Qaradawi Abdullah Bin Bayyah and the Qatar-UAE Contest Over the Arab Spring and the Gulf Crisis details the relationships between the Egyptian Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi and the Al Thani royal family in Qatar and between the Mauritanian Shaykh Abdullah Bin Bayyah and the Al Nahyans the rulers of Abu Dhabi and senior royal family in the United Arab Emirates. These relationships stretch back decades to the early 1960s and 1970s respectively. Using this history as a foundation the book examines the connections between Qaradawi’s and Bin Bayyah’s rival projects and the development of Qatar’s and the UAE’s competing state-brands and foreign policies. It raises questions about how to theorize the relationships between the Muslim scholarly-elite (the ulama) and the nation-state. Over the course of the Arab Spring and the Gulf Crisis Qaradawi and Bin Bayyah shaped the Al Thani’s and Al Nahyan’s competing ideologies in important ways. Offering new ways for academics to think about Doha and Abu Dhabi as hegemonic centers of Islamic scholarly authority alongside historical centers of learning such as Cairo Medina or Qom this book will appeal to those with an interest in modern Islamic authority the ulama Gulf politics as well as the Arab Spring and its aftermath. | Rivals in the Gulf Yusuf al-Qaradawi Abdullah Bin Bayyah and the Qatar-UAE Contest Over the Arab Spring and the Gulf Crisis

Tunisia and Egypt after the Arab Spring Party Politics in Transitions from Authoritarian Rule

Tunisia and Egypt after the Arab Spring Party Politics in Transitions from Authoritarian Rule

This book examines the processes of transition from authoritarian rule in Tunisia and Egypt between 2011 and 2014 arguing that differences between the two countries can be explained by the conduct of their respective political parties. Drawing on a new conceptualization of political parties’ agency that considers their unique nature as intermediate and intermediary institutions the book allows for the identification of those factors driving political parties’ choices in processes of transition. Moreover thanks to the employment of quantitative text analysis on the electoral manifestos of the parties involved this work presents new data for the study of party systems in Tunisia and Egypt. Presenting a new toolkit for analysis Tunisia and Egypt after the Arab Spring ultimately reveals how differing legacies of authoritarian repression across the two countries can help explain why the Tunisian transition culminated with the 2014 democratic constitution and the Egyptian transition with the 2013 military coup. Conceptually the book will appeal to those working in comparative politics and those interested in processes of democratization and authoritarian resilience. Nonetheless the focus on Tunisia and Egypt makes the book suitable reading for anyone interested in Arab politics and the MENA region generally. | Tunisia and Egypt after the Arab Spring Party Politics in Transitions from Authoritarian Rule

Experiencing Byzantium Papers from the 44th Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies Newcastle and Durham April 2011

Experiencing Byzantium Papers from the 44th Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies Newcastle and Durham April 2011

From the reception of imperial ekphraseis in Hagia Sophia to the sounds and smells of the back streets of Constantinople the sensory perception of Byzantium is an area that lends itself perfectly to an investigation into the experience of the Byzantine world. The theme of experience embraces all aspects of Byzantine studies and the Experiencing Byzantium symposium brought together archaeologists architects art historians historians musicians and theologians in a common quest to step across the line that divides how we understand and experience the Byzantine world and how the Byzantines themselves perceived the sensual aspects of their empire and also their faith spirituality identity and the nature of ’being’ in Byzantium. The papers in this volume derive from the 44th Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies held for the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies by the University of Newcastle and University of Durham at Newcastle upon Tyne in April 2011. They are written by a group of international scholars who have crossed disciplinary boundaries to approach an understanding of experience in the Byzantine world. Experiencing Byzantium is volume 18 in the series published by Ashgate on behalf of the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies. | Experiencing Byzantium Papers from the 44th Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies Newcastle and Durham April 2011

Power and Subversion in Byzantium Papers from the 43rd Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies Birmingham March 2010

Power and Subversion in Byzantium Papers from the 43rd Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies Birmingham March 2010

This volume addresses a theme of special significance for Byzantine studies. Byzantium has traditionally been deemed a civilisation which deferred to authority and set special store by orthodoxy canon and proper order. Since 1982 when the distinguished Russian Byzantinist Alexander Kazhdan wrote that 'the history of Byzantine intellectual opposition has yet to be written' scholars have increasingly highlighted cases of subversion of 'correct practice' and 'correct belief' in Byzantium. This innovative scholarly effort has produced important results although it has been hampered by the lack of dialogue across the disciplines of Byzantine studies. The 43rd Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies in 2010 drew together historians art historians and scholars of literature religion and philosophy who discussed shared and discipline-specific approaches to the theme of subversion. The present volume presents a selection of the papers delivered at the symposium enriched with specially commissioned contributions. Most papers deal with the period after the eleventh century although early Byzantium is not ignored. Theoretical questions about the nature articulation and limits of subversion are addressed within the frameworks of individual disciplines and in a larger context. The volume comes at a timely junction in the development of Byzantine studies as interest in subversion and nonconformity in general has been rising steadily in the field. | Power and Subversion in Byzantium Papers from the 43rd Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies Birmingham March 2010

US Hard Power in the Arab World Resistance the Syrian Uprising and the War on Terror

US Hard Power in the Arab World Resistance the Syrian Uprising and the War on Terror

Neither stability nor change in the post-colonial Arab world can be fully understood without considering the international context and American Foreign policy in particular. However the exact nature of America’s presence in the Arab world and the scope and modes of its influence all appear to have reached a crossroads since the Arab uprisings. ‘US Hard Power in the Arab World’ traces the US’s power of persuasion in the Arab Middle East from the onset of the War on Terror in 2001 through to the Arab Spring. With a particular focus on Syria the book explores the limits of an American smart power amid the emergence of a growing indigenous soft power whose ire is directed not only at Assad’s regime but also at the violence perpetrated or enabled by the international community headed by the US. It is argued that the blurring of the two forms of soft and hard American power has tarnished the credibility of US policies geared to win hearts and minds in the Arab world. ‘US Hard Power in the Arab World’ narrates the contests between attraction and intimidation public diplomacy and military occupation elites and publics seduction and resistance. Drawing upon a multitude of primary sources including personal interviews with Syrian activists and opposition figures this book will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of Middle East Politics as well as those concerned with American Foreign Policy and the Arab Spring. | US Hard Power in the Arab World Resistance the Syrian Uprising and the War on Terror
