There is much overlap between the phenomena of irregular warfare in the sense of special operations alongside regular operations and irregular warfare of insurgents against the regular forces of a state. Climate Change Impacts on the Stability of Small Tidal Inlets

This work explores coastal zones in the vicinity of tidal inlets which are commonly utilized for navigation sand mining waterfront developments and fishing and recreation are under particularly high population pressure and will only be exacerbated by foreshadowed climate change (CC). Although few recent studies have investigated CC impacts on very large tidal inlet systems the nature and magnitude of CC impacts on the more commonly found small tidal inlets (STIs) remains practically un-investigated to date. The combination of pre-dominant occurrence in developing countries socio-economic relevance and low community resilience general lack of data and high sensitivity to seasonal forcing makes STIs potentially very vulnerable to CC impacts. This study was undertaken to develop methods and tools that can provide insights on potential CC impacts on STIs and to demonstrate their application to assess these CC impacts. Two process based snap-shot modeling approaches for data poor and data rich environments are used to assess CC impacts and an innovative reduced complexity model is developed to obtain rapid predictions of CC impacts on the STI’s stability. Results show that STIs are unlikely to change their types but that their stability level is likely to change under CC impacts. Low-level river crossings including culverts are important for delivering a range of valuable socioeconomic services including transportation and hydrological control. These structures are also known to have negative impacts on freshwater river system morphology and ecology including the blockage of upstream fish passage particularly small-body-mass fish species. Given the enormous environmental problems created by road crossings new hydraulic engineering guidelines are proposed for fish-friendly multi-cell box culvert designs. The focus of these guidelines is on smooth box culverts without appurtenance with a novel approach based upon three basic concepts: (I) the culvert design is optimized for fish passage for small to medium water discharges and for flood capacity for larger discharges (II) low-velocity zones are provided along the wetted perimeter in the culvert barrel and quantified in terms of a fraction of the wetted flow area where the local longitudinal velocity is less than a characteristic fish speed linked to swimming performances of targeted fish species and (III) the culvert barrel is smooth without any other form of boundary treatment and appurtenance. The present monograph develops a number of practical considerations in particular relevant to box culvert operations for less-than-design discharges. It is argued that upstream fish passage capabilities would imply a revised approach to maintenance in part linked to the targeted fish species.
