Fluoride Removal from Groundwater by Adsorption Technology

Fluoride Removal from Groundwater by Adsorption Technology

In the Eastern corridor of Northern region of Ghana presence of high fluoride concentration in the groundwater has made many drilled boreholes unusable for drinking. Little is however known about the factors contributing to the occurrence of high fluoride in this part of Ghana and it’s spatial distribution. Treatment of the fluoride-contaminated groundwater by adsorption is also hampered by the lack of suitable adsorbents that are locally available. Based on principal component analysis and saturation indices calculations this thesis highlights that the predominant mechanisms controlling the fluoride enrichment probably include calcite precipitation and Na/Ca exchange processes both of which deplete Ca from the groundwater and promote the dissolution of fluorite. The mechanisms also include F-/OH- anion exchange processes as well as evapotranspiration processes which concentrate the fluoride ions hence increasing its concentration in the groundwater. Spatial mapping showed that the high fluoride groundwaters occur predominantly in the Saboba Cheriponi and Yendi districts. The thesis further highlights that modifying the surface of indigenous materials by an aluminium coating process is a very promising approach to develop a suitable fluoride adsorbent. Aluminum oxide coated media reduced fluoride in water from 5. 0 ± 0. 2 mg/L to ≤ 1. 5 mg/L (which is the WHO health based guideline for fluoride) in both batch and continuous flow column experiments in the laboratory. Kinetic and isotherm studies thermodynamic calculations as well as analytical results from Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy suggest the mechanism of fluoride adsorption onto aluminium oxide coated media involved both physisorption and chemisorption processes. Field testing in a fluoritic community in Northern Ghana showed that the adsorbent is also capable of treating fluoride-contaminated groundwater in field conditions suggesting it is a promising defluoridation adsorbent. The adsorbent also showed good regenerability potential that would allow re-use which could make it practically and economically viable. Additional research is however required to further increase the fluoride adsorption capacity of developed adsorbent. | Fluoride Removal from Groundwater by Adsorption Technology

Planting Design Connecting People and Place

Planting Design Connecting People and Place

Landscape designers have long understood the use of plants to provide beauty aesthetic pleasure and visual stimulation while supporting a broad range of functional goals. However the potential for plants in the landscape to elicit human involvement and provide mental stimulation and restoration is much less well understood. This book meshes the art of planting design with an understanding of how humans respond to natural environments. Beginning with an understanding of human needs preferences and responses to landscape the author interprets the ways in which an understanding of the human-environment interaction can inform planting design. Many of the principles and techniques that may be used in planting design are beautifully illustrated in full colour with examples by leading landscape architects and designers from the United Kingdom Europe North America and Asia including: Andrea Cochran Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture San Francisco CA Design Workshop Inc. Richard Hartlage Land Morphology Seattle WA Shunmyo Masuno Japan Landscape Consultants Ltd. Yokohama Piet Oudolf Hummelo The Netherlands Melody Redekop Vancouver Christine Ten Eyck Ten Eyck Landscape Architects Inc. Austin TX Kongjian Yu Turenscape Ltd. Beijing. The book stimulates thought provides new direction and assists the reader to find their own unique design voice. Because there are many valid processes and intentions for landscape design the book is not intended to be overly prescriptive. Rather than presenting a strict design method and accompanying set of rules Planting Design provides information insight and inspiration as a basis for developing the individual designer’s own expression in this most challenging of art forms. | Planting Design Connecting People and Place

Restorative and Responsive Human Services

Restorative and Responsive Human Services

In Restorative and Responsive Human Services Gale Burford John Braithwaite and Valerie Braithwaite bring together a distinguished collection providing rich lessons on how regulation in human services can proceed in empowering ways that heal and are respectful of human relationships and legal obligations. The human services are in trouble: combining restorative justice with responsive regulation might redeem them renewing their well-intended principles. Families provide glue that connects complex systems. What are the challenges in scaling up relational practices that put families and primary groups at the core of health education and other social services? This collection has a distinctive focus on the relational complexity of restorative practices. How do they enable more responsive ways of grappling with complexity than hierarchical and prescriptive human services? Lessons from responsive business regulation inform a re-imagining of the human services to advance wellbeing and reduce domination. Readers are challenged to re-examine the perverse incentives and contradictions buried in policies and practices. How do they undermine the capacities of families and communities to solve problems on their own terms? This book will interest those who harbor concerns about the creep of domination into the lives of vulnerable citizens. It will help policymakers and researchers to re-focus human services to fundamental outcomes at the foundation of sustainable democracies. This book is available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www. routledge. com. Statistics in Action A Canadian Outlook

Statistics in Action A Canadian Outlook

Commissioned by the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) Statistics in Action: A Canadian Outlook helps both general readers and users of statistics better appreciate the scope and importance of statistics. It presents the ways in which statistics is used while highlighting key contributions that Canadian statisticians are making to science technology business government and other areas. The book emphasizes the role and impact of computing in statistical modeling and analysis including the issues involved with the huge amounts of data being generated by automated processes. The first two chapters review the development of statistics as a discipline in Canada and describe some major contributions to survey methodology made by Statistics Canada one of the world’s premier official statistics agencies. The book next discusses how statistical methodologies such as functional data analysis and the Metropolis algorithm are applied in a wide variety of fields including risk management and genetics. It then focuses on the application of statistical methods in medicine and public health as well as finance and e-commerce. The remainder of the book addresses how statistics is used to study critical scientific areas including difficult-to-access populations endangered species climate change and agricultural forecasts. About the SSCFounded in Montréal in 1972 the SSC is the main professional organization for statisticians and related professionals in Canada. Its mission is to promote the use and development of statistics and probability. The SSC publishes the bilingual quarterly newsletter SSC Liaison and the peer-reviewed scientific journal The Canadian Journal of Statistics.
