Dynamics of Soils and Their Engineering Applications

Dynamics of Soils and Their Engineering Applications

The book offers systematic dynamic analysis of soils and their engineering applications including machine foundations and aims to develop a clear understanding of the subject. It comprises sixteen chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the various problems in soil dynamics. In Chapter 2 concepts of theory of vibrations are discussed along with their applications in designing Vibration Absorbers and Pickups. Wave propagation in elastic medium including wave refraction in layered medium is covered in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 deals with the procedure of determining dynamic properties of soils using various laboratory and field tests. Dynamic earth pressures in retaining walls and dynamic bearing capacity of footings are dealt with in Chapters 5 and 6 respectively. Chapters 7and 8 respectively deal with dynamic behavior of pile foundations and slopes. Causes of liquefaction of soils and prediction of liquefaction potential have been discussed in Chapter 9. In Chapter 10 the procedure of estimating the unbalanced forces in various types of machines are covered. Chapters 11 12 and 13 deal with the analysis and design of foundations of reciprocating machine hammer and turbo-generators respectively. In Chapter 14 problems of vibration isolation and screening are dealt with. Chapter 15 discusses the analysis and design of reinforced earth wall located in seismic areas. A new concept of a conventional rigid retaining wall having reinforced backfill is presented in Chapter 16 giving complete analysis and design procedure considering seismic forces. | Dynamics of Soils and Their Engineering Applications

American Government Constitutional Democracy Under Pressure

American Government Constitutional Democracy Under Pressure

American Government: Constitutional Democracy Under Pressure highlights the necessary tension between our constitutional principles and institutions and the populist heat that sometimes roils our national politics especially at the current political moment. Our constitutional democracy has been under pressure for some time but few would deny that fears for its fate have deepened in just the past few years. We assume that our political institutions will limit and contain contemporary populism just as the Founders intended and as they have in the past but will they? An increasingly polarized electorate urging their representatives to fight and never to compromise may be stressing Constitutional limits. This new edition offers to help American government teachers lead their students to a nuanced theoretical and practical understanding of what is happening in the politics of their Constitutional democracy today. New to the Second Edition Further develops and highlights the distinguishing theme of the book Constitutional Democracy Under Pressure in light of Trump Administration events over the last two years. Expands coverage of all media aspects including fake news social media responsible journalism and related topics including foreign manipulation of the news. Includes the most recent election results. Addresses issues specific to the Trump Administration including unique coverage of the 25th Amendment cabinet instability election interferences executive power and unitary action and impact on the courts. Updates in all tables figures suggested readings plus photo updates throughout. | American Government Constitutional Democracy Under Pressure

Tensegrity Structures Design Methods

Tensegrity Structures Design Methods

Tensegrity structures are pre-stressed systems of cables and bars in which no bar is connected to the other and the structure has no continuous rigid skeleton. This general introduction presents an original general method for the design of tensegrity structures the first configurations of which were found by trial and error. The book begins with two-dimensional tensegrity structures particularly tensegrity nets tensegrity chains tensegrity rings and tensegrity arches. These are then developed to original configurations of spatial tensegrity structures such as tensegrity slabs primitive spatial tensegrity arches and primitive tensegrity domes as well as more elaborate spatial tensegrity structures such as tensegrity cylindrical shells slim tensegrity domes tensegrity vaults and tensegrity caps. Presents a robust new approach to the design of tensegrity structures Extends tensegrity structures to new three-dimensional configurations Tensegrity Structures Design Methods suits structural civil and mechanical engineers and architects as well as graduate students. Oren Vilnay is Professor Emeritus and was founder and head of the Department of Structural Engineering at Ben Gurion University Israel. He is also former head of the Structural Engineering Section at Technion—IsraelInstitute of Technology. Leon Chernin is Lecturer at the University of Dundee. He was granted a PhD in Structural Engineering from the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology. His research activities encompass both physical testing and numerical modelling.
