Women and Travel Historical and Contemporary Perspectives

Women and Travel Historical and Contemporary Perspectives

Women and Travel: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives is a fascinating look at the behavior motivations experiences and needs of women as tourists and travellers drawing on both historic and contemporary eras. Surprisingly little research has explored key issues experiences and opportunities in the context of women’s travel. This revealing volume fills this gap exploring the discourses debates and discussions about women travel and tourism. With an international roster of contributors from diverse regions of the world the book celebrates a variety of women’s voices. Khoo-Lattimore and Wilson deliberately sought to include nontraditional and non-Western perspectives on women’s travel with inclusions of Asian solo female travelers; Islamic women travellers and the constraints placed on them; and women who cannot travel (or choose for whatever reason a ‘home holiday’). This enlightening volume brings together scholars from the broad areas of tourism hospitality geography and leisure studies to examine how and why women travel. The chapters bring light to perspectives from different countries cultures backgrounds and religions and utilize different methods approaches and styles of presentation. Women and Travel: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives will be of interest to academics and graduate students from a range of disciplines including tourism leisure studies sociology cultural geography anthropology feminist and gender studies business economics and management; as well as professionals working in the tourism industry particularly those with an interest in niche markets and segmentation. | Women and Travel Historical and Contemporary Perspectives

Travellers and Cosmographers Studies in the History of Early Modern Travel and Ethnology

Travellers and Cosmographers Studies in the History of Early Modern Travel and Ethnology

Joan-Pau Rubiés brings together here eleven studies published between 1991 and 2005 that illuminate the impact of travel writing on the transformation of early modern European culture. The new worlds that European navigation opened up at the turn of the 16th century elicited a great deal of curiosity and were the subject of a vast range of writings much of them with an empirical basis albeit often subtly fictionalized. In the context of intense literary and intellectual activity that characterized the Renaissance the encounters generated by European colonial activities in fact produced a remarkable variety of images of human diversity. Some of these images were conditioned by the actual dynamics of cross-cultural encounters overseas but many others were elaborated in Europe by cosmographers historians and philosophers pursuing their own moral and political agendas. As the studies included here show the combined effect was in the long term dramatic: interacting with the impact of humanism and of insurmountable religious divisions travel writing decisively contributed to the transformation of European culture towards the concerns of the Enlightenment. The essays illuminate this process through a combination of general discussions and the contextual analysis of particular texts and debates ranging form the earliest ethnographies produced by merchants travelling to Asia with Vasco da Gama to the writings of Jesuit missionaries researching idolatry in India and China or thinkers like Hugo Grotius seeking to explain the origin of the American Indians. | Travellers and Cosmographers Studies in the History of Early Modern Travel and Ethnology

Liminal Landscapes Travel Experience and Spaces In-between

Liminal Landscapes Travel Experience and Spaces In-between

Ideas and concepts of liminality have long shaped debates around the uses and practices of space in constructions of identity particularly in relation to different forms of travel such as tourism migration and pilgrimage and the social cultural and experiential landscapes associated with these and other mobilities. The ritual performative and embodied geographies of borderzones non-places transitional spaces or ‘spaces in-between’ are often discussed in terms of the liminal yet there have been few attempts to problematize the concept or to rethink how ideas of the liminal might find critical resonance with contemporary developments in the study of place space and mobility. Liminal Landscapes fills this void by bringing together variety of new and emerging methodological approaches of liminality from varying disciplines to explore new theoretical perspectives on mobility space and socio-cultural experience. By doing so it offers new insight into contemporary questions about technology surveillance power the city and post-industrial modernity within the context of tourism and mobility. The book draws on a wide range of disciplinary approaches including social anthropology cultural geography film media and cultural studies art and visual culture and tourism studies. It brings together recent research from scholars with international reputations in the fields of tourism mobility landscape and place alongside the work of emergent scholars who are developing new insights and perspectives in this area. This timely intervention is the first collection to offer an interdisciplinary account of the intersection between liminality and landscape in terms of space place and identity. It therefore charts new directions in the study of liminal spaces and mobility practices and will be valuable reading for range of students researchers and academics interested in this field. | Liminal Landscapes Travel Experience and Spaces In-between

Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes Etiology and Prevention

Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes Etiology and Prevention

Over the past two decades type 2 diabetes has emerged as a leading threat to global health and the considerable overlap in obesity and diabetes trends are likely no coincidence. While the underpinnings for both etiologies are linked to lifestyles particularly dietary and physical activity patterns determining optimal approaches for preventing and managing type 2 diabetes using dietary composition remains a challenge. Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes: Etiology and Prevention rigorously examines various perspectives on diet and type 2 diabetes. The book presents a comprehensive description and evaluation of the central research to date primarily in humans on the macronutrients and their subclasses micronutrients foods beverages and overall dietary patterns with respect to the risk of type 2 diabetes. It addresses the mediating/mechanistic role of obesity and body composition throughout the text where appropriate. The chapter authors all leading researchers in the field discuss fundamental nutritional principles applied to the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes as well as applied behavioral studies on nutrition and diabetes for each subject area. The depth and breadth of this book includes aspects of the food synergy model for understanding the complicated pathways between nutrition dietary habits and risk for type 2 diabetes. It also examines the effects of artificially sweetened beverages and coffee. This reference provides a review of the science on the potential impact of many components of dietary behavior and nutritional properties on etiology and risk for this disease knowledge that is essential for formulating informed approaches to public health progress in this area. | Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes Etiology and Prevention

Discovering Evolution Equations with Applications Volume 2-Stochastic Equations

Discovering Evolution Equations with Applications Volume 2-Stochastic Equations

Most existing books on evolution equations tend either to cover a particular class of equations in too much depth for beginners or focus on a very specific research direction. Thus the field can be daunting for newcomers to the field who need access to preliminary material and behind-the-scenes detail. Taking an applications-oriented conversational approach Discovering Evolution Equations with Applications: Volume 2-Stochastic Equations provides an introductory understanding of stochastic evolution equations. The text begins with hands-on introductions to the essentials of real and stochastic analysis. It then develops the theory for homogenous one-dimensional stochastic ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and extends the theory to systems of homogenous linear stochastic ODEs. The next several chapters focus on abstract homogenous linear nonhomogenous linear and semi-linear stochastic evolution equations. The author also addresses the case in which the forcing term is a functional before explaining Sobolev-type stochastic evolution equations. The last chapter discusses several topics of active research. Each chapter starts with examples of various models. The author points out the similarities of the models develops the theory involved and then revisits the examples to reinforce the theoretical ideas in a concrete setting. He incorporates a substantial collection of questions and exercises throughout the text and provides two layers of hints for selected exercises at the end of each chapter. Suitable for readers unfamiliar with analysis even at the undergraduate level this book offers an engaging and accessible account of core theoretical results of stochastic evolution equations in a way that gradually builds readers’ intuition. | Discovering Evolution Equations with Applications Volume 2-Stochastic Equations
