Mapping the Total Value Stream A Comprehensive Guide for Production and Transactional Processes

Mapping the Total Value Stream A Comprehensive Guide for Production and Transactional Processes

Mapping the Total Value Stream defines and elaborates on the concepts of value stream mapping (VSM) for both production and transactional processes. This book reshapes and extends the lessons originally put forward in a number of pioneering works including the popular Value Stream Management for the Lean Office. It reinforces fundamental concepts and theoretical models with real-world applications and complete examples of the value stream mapping technique. To educate VSM mappers on the specific mechanics of the technique the text provides in-depth explanations for commonly encountered situations. The authors also provide a more complete perspective on the concept of availability. While they discuss availability of equipment in transactional processes they extend the concept by elaborating on availability as it applies to employees. The calculation of process lead time for work queues is taken to an advanced level not only is the calculation of this lead time explained but the text also covers the very real possibility of having more work in the queue than available time. While previous books have focused on only production process VSM or transactional process VSM this work meets the real needs of both manufacturers and service sector organizations by dealing with both types. It goes beyond explaining each scenario to teach readers what techniques are commonly applicable to both and also explains areas of difference so that mappers will be able to readily adapt to whatever unique situations present themselves. | Mapping the Total Value Stream A Comprehensive Guide for Production and Transactional Processes

Community Writing Researching Social Issues Through Composition

Community Writing Researching Social Issues Through Composition

Community Writing: Researching Social Issues Through Composition employs a series of assignments that guide students to research and write about issues confronting their individual communities. Students start by identifying a community to which they belong and focusing on problems in it and then analyze possible solutions construct arguments for them decide which are likely to succeed and consider how to initiate action. This is a primary text for first-year composition courses covering the basics of the writing process. The assignments are recursive. Short writing assignments in each chapter build up to longer papers. Each of the assignment questions is accompanied by a guide to thinking about and writing the assigned paper followed by a short Focus On reading that provides a brief account of community activism a media case study or a notable success story. The longer papers are accompanied by in-class peer reading groups. Each successive peer reading attempts a higher level of conceptual critique. By working together throughout the semester students create increasingly adept peer groups familiar with all stages of each other's research. The book is carefully structured but there is plenty of give in it allowing instructors to be flexible in adapting it to the needs of their students and courses. Community Writing: is distinguished by pedagogy based on a collaborative process-oriented service learning approach that emphasizes media critique and field research on community issues chosen by individual students; answers real student questions such as: Where do I find articles on my topic? What if evidence contradicts my hypothesis? How do I know if a source is biased?; is web-savvy-guides students into building their own Web sites including a unique guide for critiquing the design and veracity of other people's websites; and is media-savvy-topics include media monopolies spin control | Community Writing Researching Social Issues Through Composition

Adaptive Thermal Comfort: Principles and Practice

Adaptive Thermal Comfort: Principles and Practice

The fundamental function of buildings is to provide safe and healthy shelter. For the fortunate they also provide comfort and delight. In the twentieth century comfort became a 'product' produced by machines and run on cheap energy. In a world where fossil fuels are becoming ever scarcer and more expensive and the climate more extreme the challenge of designing comfortable buildings today requires a new approach. This timely book is the first in a trilogy from leaders in the field which will provide just that. It explains in a clear and comprehensible manner how we stay comfortable by using our bodies minds buildings and their systems to adapt to indoor and outdoor conditions which change with the weather and the climate. The book is in two sections. The first introduces the principles on which the theory of adaptive thermal comfort is based. The second explains how to use field studies to measure thermal comfort in practice and to analyze the data gathered. Architects have gradually passed responsibility for building performance to service engineers who are largely trained to see comfort as the product designed using simplistic comfort models. The result has contributed to a shift to buildings that use ever more energy. A growing international consensus now calls for low-energy buildings. This means designers must first produce robust passive structures that provide occupants with many opportunities to make changes to suit their environmental needs. Ventilation using free natural energy should be preferred and mechanical conditioning only used when the climate demands it. This book outlines the theory of adaptive thermal comfort that is essential to understand and inform such building designs. This book should be required reading for all students teachers and practitioners of architecture building engineering and management for all who have a role in producing and occupying twenty-first century adaptive low-car | Adaptive Thermal Comfort: Principles and Practice

The Routledge Handbook of the Gig Economy

The Routledge Handbook of the Gig Economy

Research on the growth of the precarious economy is of signifi cant interest as the economy increasingly becomes dependent on gig work. However as platform and automated service work has grown there remains a chasm in understanding the key aspects of digital labour. This handbook presents comprehensive theoretical empirical and historical accounts of the political economy of informal work from the late 20th century to the present. It examines the rich and varied analysis and critique of the informalisation of work focusing on its most signifi cant theories intellectual traditions and authors. It highlights the political social cultural and developmental impact of the deterioration of employment in the Global North and Global South as well as the extreme threat posed to the planet by the growth of contingent work poverty and enduring and increasing inequalities produced and reproduced by the reformation of capitalism in the contemporary age of neoliberal capitalism. The period from the 1980s to the present is marked by the expanded extraction of surplus value from workers through the creation of non-standard jobs and the restructuring of work. A central component of the restructuring of work is the extension of gig employment through the development of algorithmic platforms which direct labourers to perform discrete tasks. This is a definitive collection representing the primary reference work contributing to our understanding of the subject. The book is written and presented in a clear manner accessible to scholars and researchers of international political economy labour economics and sociology who are eager for new research examining this phenomenon as well as specialists in the field of labour relations. Chapter 11 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www. taylorfrancis. com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4. 0 license. Aviation Design and Innovation

Aviation Design and Innovation

In order to facilitate the safe efficient and cost effective exchange of passengers and cargo between ground and sky airports require the provision of adequate runways aircraft manoeuvring areas cargo sheds and passenger processing facilities. Airports are capital intensive facilities and planning errors which result in the over or under-provision of capacity are both costly and problematic to rectify and so understanding the optimal configuration of passenger terminals is paramount. Of course the design of passenger terminal buildings is influenced not only by levels of demand the commercial requirements of airlines and tenant companies the availability of investment funds and political influence but also by the aircraft that will be using the facility both now and in the future. Indeed the introduction of the first generation of passenger jets in the 1950s and higher-capacity wide-bodied aircraft in the late 1960s required not only the expansion of gate areas and passenger processing facilities but also the introduction of new technologies such as the travelator the baggage reclaim carousel and the airbridge. The introduction of the A380 ‘Super Jumbo’ into revenue passenger service in 2007 similarly demanded a reconfiguration of the airports it serves and practitioners need to be cognisant of the options for accommodating a new generation of large aircraft. While large aircraft generally require a lengthy turn around period between flights and the extensive provision of expensive fixed ground support infrastructure low cost carriers pursue a business model based on very short turnarounds and minimal use of airport infrastructure assets such as airbridges. One of the main challenges facing airport operators is how to accommodate the diverse and dynamic requirements of different operators and these issues are addressed in this Volume. Traditionally aircraft were made and manufactured by small companies within one country but as costs have increased and technology has become more sophisticated a relatively small number of manufacturers which are supported by international supply chains have come to dominate the commercial aircraft market. Originally all aviation jet fuels were derived from crude oil. However concerns about future oil supply and energy security combined with the need to improve aviation’s environmental performance and sustainability has driven the development of alternative fuel sources. However the development and adoption of alternative aviation fuels is not straightforward and the Volume examines the opportunities and challenges of widespread biofuel adoption in terms of production capacity emissions reductions cost and commercial viability. The final essays in this Volume address business model innovation in the airline and airport sector and include considerations of the future evolution of low cost carriers the potential for airline-airport alliances and the development of multi-airport multinational operating companies. | Aviation Design and Innovation
