The Gender Pay Gap and Social Partnership in Europe Findings from Close the Deal Fill the Gap

The Gender Pay Gap and Social Partnership in Europe Findings from Close the Deal Fill the Gap

The gender pay gap (GPG) exists in every European country but it varies considerably even in EU member states covered by the same legal principles on pay equality. Part of the variation can be explained by different patterns of social partnership. With current policy pressure to de-centralise collective bargaining and increase the percentage of pay linked to productivity what role can social partnership play in tackling the GPG? Reporting on the findings of the European Commission funded research project Close the Deal Fill the Gap this book uses an interdisciplinary analysis involving legal economic and sociological expertise to explore the role of social partnership in GPG in Italy Poland and the UK. Selected on the basis of their contrasting profiles in terms of legal regulation industrial relations systems of collective bargaining coverage of collective agreements and differing rates of the GPG the in-depth study provides important insights into the main issues underlying the problem of reducing the gender pay gap which have led to guidelines in the negotiation of arrangements on GPG-related issues. Based on a unique comparative interdisciplinary and action-oriented esearch project it will be of great interest to all researchers and advanced students with an interest in women’s representation in the workforce and the gender pay gap as well as practitioners and policy makers in organisations such as trade unions and employers’ associations. | The Gender Pay Gap and Social Partnership in Europe Findings from Close the Deal Fill the Gap

Sociolinguistics of the Korean Wave Hallyu and Soft Power

Sociolinguistics of the Korean Wave Hallyu and Soft Power

Samosir and Wee examine how the immensely popular Korean Wave (K-wave) also known as Hallyu is wielded as soft power through the use of communication for persuasion and attraction on the global stage. The Korean Wave refers to the global spread and popularity of South Korean culture particularly its pop music (K-pop) serialised dramas (K-dramas) and films (K-films). Given the South Korean government’s involvement in providing funding and publicity the Korean Wave raises interesting sociolinguistic questions about the relationship between artistry and citizenship the use of social media in facilitating the consumption of cultural products and ultimately the nature of soft power itself. Studies of soft power have tended to come from the field of international relations. This book shows that sociolinguistics actually has a number of tools in its conceptual arsenal – such as indexicality stance taking affect and styling – that can shed light on the Korean Wave as a form of soft power. As the first book-length sociolinguistic analysis of the Korean Wave and soft power this book demonstrates how K-pop K-dramas and K-films have been able to encourage in consumers an anthropological stance towards all things Korean. This volume will be of particular interest to students and scholars in sociolinguistics political science cultural studies and Korean studies. Creating the Path to Success in the Classroom Teaching to Close the Graduation Gap for Minority First-Generation and Academically Unprepar

Creating the Path to Success in the Classroom Teaching to Close the Graduation Gap for Minority First-Generation and Academically Unprepar

This is a book for all faculty who are concerned with promoting the persistence of all students whom they teach. Most recognize that faculty play a major role in student retention and success because they typically have more direct contact with students than others on campus. However little attention has been paid to role of the faculty in this specific mission or to the corresponding characteristics of teaching teacher-student interactions and connection to student affairs activities that lead to students’ long-term engagement to their academic success and ultimately to graduation. At a time when the numbers of underrepresented students – working adults minority first-generation low-income and international students – is increasing this book a companion to her earlier Teaching Underprepared Students addresses that lack of specific guidance by providing faculty with additional evidence-based instructional practices geared toward reaching all the students in their classrooms including those from groups that traditionally have been the least successful while maintaining high standards and expectations. Recognizing that there are no easy answers Kathleen Gabriel offers faculty ideas that can be incorporated in or modified to align with faculty’s existing teaching methods. She covers topics such as creating a positive and inclusive course climate fostering a community of learners increasing engagement and students’ interactions activating connections with culturally relevant material reinforcing self-efficacy with growth mindset and mental toughness techniques improving lectures by building in meaningful educational activities designing reading and writing assignments for stimulating deep learning and critical thinking and making grade and assessment choices that can promote learning. | Creating the Path to Success in the Classroom Teaching to Close the Graduation Gap for Minority First-Generation and Academically Unprepar

The Soft Power of the Korean Wave Parasite BTS and Drama

China’s Soft War on Terror Space-Making Processes of Securitization

China’s Soft War on Terror Space-Making Processes of Securitization

This book explores how the Chinese government reasserts its control and management of public spaces as part of its overall counter-terrorism strategy. The work focuses primarily on the banal and alternative forms that China’s ‘war on terror’ takes: the everyday non-military socio-economic and spatio-material. It presents three different cases of control associated with the state’s effort to manage material social and digital public spaces as remedies to terrorism and ethnic unrest in China: the redevelopment project of Kashgar—the ‘home’ of Uyghur culture—from 2001 to 2017; the forging of local partnerships with potential agents (i. e. the local cadres and imams in Xinjiang) as part of the process of implementing counter-terrorism policies; and an online campaign about international terrorism that appeared on Sina Weibo. Using securitization theory as a theoretical framework the book establishes links between human geography and critical security studies and advances the understanding of non-confrontational forms of resistance in China. It also focuses attention on the binary relationship between the securitizing agency of the state and the counter-securitization agency of ‘terrorists’ while also exploring the manner in which other societal forces interact with these processes. This book will be of interest to students of critical terrorism studies Chinese studies human geography and security studies. | China’s Soft War on Terror Space-Making Processes of Securitization
