Structure for Architects A Case Study in Steel Wood and Reinforced Concrete Design

Structure for Architects A Case Study in Steel Wood and Reinforced Concrete Design

Structure for Architects: A Case Study in Steel Wood and Reinforced Concrete Design is a sequel to the authors’ first text Structure for Architects: A Primer emphasizing the conceptual understanding of structural design in simple language and terms. This book focuses on structural principles applied to the design of typical structural members—a beam a girder and a column—in a diagrammatic frame building. Through the application of a single Case Study across three key materials the book illustrates the theory principles and process of structural design. The Case Study progresses step-by-step for each material from determining tributary areas and loads through a member's selection and design. The book addresses the frequent disparity between the way architects and engineers perceive and process information with engineers focusing on technical aspects and architects focusing on visual concepts. Structure for Architects: A Case Study in Steel Wood and Reinforced Concrete Design presents readers with an understanding of fundamental engineering principles through a uniquely thematic Case Study. Focusing on the conceptual understanding of structural design this book will be of interest to architecture students and professionals looking to understand the application of structural principles in relation to steel wood and concrete design. | Structure for Architects A Case Study in Steel Wood and Reinforced Concrete Design

Joinery Joists and Gender A History of Woodworking for the 21st Century

Joinery Joists and Gender A History of Woodworking for the 21st Century

Joinery Joists and Gender: A History of Woodworking for the 21st Century is the first publication of its kind to survey the long and rich histories of women and gender non-conforming persons who work in wood. Written for craft practitioners design students and readers interested in the intersections of gender and labor history—with 200 full-color images both historical and contemporary—this book provides an accessible and insightful entry into the histories practices and lived experiences of women and nonbinary makers in woodworking. In the first half the author presents a woodworking history primarily in Europe and the United States that highlights the practical and philosophical issues that have marked women’s participation in the field. Research focuses on a diverse range of practitioners from Lady Yun to Adina White. This is followed by sixteen in-depth profiles of contemporary woodworkers all of whom identify fine woodworking as their principal vocation. Through studio visits interviews and photographs of space and process the book uncovers the varied practices and contributions these diverse artisans make to the understanding of wood as a medium to engage spatial material aesthetic and even existential challenges. Beautifully illustrated profiles include Wendy Maruyama one of the first women to earn an MFA in woodworking in the US; Sarah Marriage founder of Baltimore’s A Workshop of Our Own a woodshop and educational space specifically for women and gender non-conforming makers; Yuri Kobayashi whose sublime work blurs boundaries between the worlds of art and craft sculpture and furniture; and Folayemi Wilson whose work draws equally on African American history and Afrofuturism to explore and illuminate the ways that furniture and wood traditions shape social relations. | Joinery Joists and Gender A History of Woodworking for the 21st Century

A History of Energy Flows From Human Labor to Renewable Power

A History of Energy Flows From Human Labor to Renewable Power

This book presents a global and historical perspective of energy flows during the last millennium. The search for sustainable energy is a key issue dominating today’s energy regime. This book details the historical evolution of energy following the overlapping and slow flowing transitions from one regime to another. In doing so it seeks to provide insight into future energy transitions and the means of utilizing sustainable energy sources to reduce humanity’s fossil fuel footprint. The book begins with an examination of the earliest and most basic forms of energy use namely that of humans metabolizing food in order to work with the first transition following the domestication and breeding of horses and other animals. The book also examines energy sources key to development during the industrialization and mechanization such as wood and coal as well as more recent sources such as crude oil and nuclear energy. The book then assesses energy flows that are at the forefront of sustainability by examining green sources such as solar wind power and hydropower. While it is easy to see energy flows in terms of “revolutions ” transitions have taken centuries to evolve and transitions are never fully global as for example wood remains the primary fuel source for cooking in much of the developing world. This book not only demonstrates the longevity of energy transitions but also discusses the possibility for reducing transition times when technological developments provide inexpensive and safe energy sources that can reduce the dependency on fossil fuels. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of energy transitions sustainable energy and environmental and energy history. | A History of Energy Flows From Human Labor to Renewable Power
