Future of Sustainable Agriculture in Saline Environments

Future of Sustainable Agriculture in Saline Environments

Food production on present and future saline soils deserves the world’s attention particularly because food security is a pressing issue millions of hectares of degraded soils are available worldwide freshwater is becoming increasingly scarce and the global sea-level rise threatens food production in fertile coastal lowlands. Future of Sustainable Agriculture in Saline Environments aims to showcase the global potential of saline agriculture. The book covers the essential topics such as policy and awareness soil management future crops and genetic developments all supplemented by case studies that show how this knowledge has been applied. It offers an overview of current research themes and practical cases focused on enhancing food production on saline lands. FEATURES Describes the critical role of the revitalization of salt-degraded lands in achieving sustainability in agriculture on a global scale Discusses practical solutions toward using drylands and delta areas threatened by salinity for sustainable food production Presents strategies for adaptation to climate change and sea-level rise through food production under saline conditions Addresses the diverse aspects of crop salt tolerance and microbiological associations Highlights the complex problem of salinity and waterlogging and safer management of poor-quality water supplemented by case studies A PDF version of this book is available for free in Open Access at www. taylorfrancis. com. Introduction to Ocean Circulation and Modeling

Foundation of Structural Geology

Foundation of Structural Geology

Since the first edition was published in 1983 this highly-regarded introductory textbook has been used by many generations of students worldwide. It is specifically tailored to the requirements of first or second year geology undergraduates. The third edition has been extensively revised and updated to include many new sections and over 50 new or redrawn illustrations. There are now over 220 illustrations many incorporating a second colour to highlight essential features. The format has been changed to enhance the visual attractiveness of the book. The tripartite organization of the first and second editions has been modified by combining the purely descriptive or factual aspects of fault and fold structure in the earlier chapters with a simple treatment of mechanisms leaving the more geometrically complex treatment until after the relevant sections on stress and strain as before. Some subjects are introduced for the first time e. g. inversion and orogen collapse and others have been extensively modified e. g. the chapter on gravity controlled structures now emphasises modern work on salt tectonics. The last third of the book is devoted to the wider context of geological structures and how they relate to plate tectonics. The final two chapters have been considerably expanded and give examples of various types of geological structures in their plate tectonic settings in both modern and ancient orogenic belts. | Foundation of Structural Geology

Advances in Cereals Processing Technologies

Advances in Cereals Processing Technologies

The present book presents its reader with comprehensive knowledge related to cereals processing. It is imperative to have sound knowledge of food laws and regulations with an Indian perspective as these play a pivotal role in commercializing food products as well as fresh produce which are aptly covered in this book. It includes recent trends in technology of cereals based products technological updates in legumes and pulses based convenience/processed foods various aspects of evolution of bakery and confectionery technology and technological evaluation of milling. Since age's process of fermentation was employed for preserving the cereals based food by using general and specified micro flora and micro fauna the science and technology involved is well explained in the chapter titled 'Fermented Food Based on Cereal and Pulses. ' The most important quality attributes related to cereals processing are rheological and thermal changes which occur when extrinsic factors such as moisture and temperature are ebbed and flowed. This subject was sensibly covered under 'Rheological and Thermal Changes Occurring During Processing. ' Sugarcane and the sugar industry have the largest contribution to the industrial development. Various unit operations and technology involved are explained as recent updates in sugar honey jaggery and salt processing. Shelf life stability of the products with respect to various chemical parameters attributed to the oxidative changes in processed foods is also aptly covered. Note: T&F does not sell or distribute the hardback in India Pakistan Nepal Bhutan Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. This title is co-published with NIPA. | Advances in Cereals Processing Technologies

North America's Natural Wonders

North America's Natural Wonders

Although millions of Americans and international travelers take road trips through North America every year most have no understanding of how the landscape came to be. North America’s Natural Wonders provides everything these travelers need to understand the landscape. Written by a career geologist with decades of experience in the field it guides readers through the most iconic geologically significant scenery in North America and explains what they are seeing. Volume I focuses on western North America including the Canadian Rockies the Southwest Great Basin and Tetons-Yellowstone Country. The trips detailed in this volume include stops at the glaciers and mountains of Banff National Park the Grand Canyon numerous parks in Utah and the geysers and hot springs of Yellowstone. It also features lesser known but equally interesting geologic formations and how to access these sites. Volume II focuses on central and eastern North America including the Appalachians of Virginia and West Virginia the Colorado Rockies Austin-Big Bend Country and the Sierra Madre Oriental of Mexico. The trips detailed in this volume include stops at the Blue Ridge in Shenandoah National Park Carlsbad Caverns National Park Big Bend National Park Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak the Colorado Mineral Belt Aspen and the Maroon Bells giant salt-cored uplifts of the La Popa Basin Mexico and many others. It also features lesser known but equally interesting geologic formations and how to access these sites. This detailed guide will help the curious layman the rock hound the geology student and the professional geologist understand what they are seeing when they look at a roadcut quarry or landscape. A full understanding of natural formations will enhance the traveler’s experience beyond simple sightseeing. | North America's Natural Wonders

Textbook of Ion Channels Volume II Properties Function and Pharmacology of the Superfamilies

Textbook of Ion Channels Volume II Properties Function and Pharmacology of the Superfamilies

The Textbook of Ion Channels is a set of three volumes that provides a wide-ranging refer- ence source on ion channels for students instructors and researchers. Ion channels are membrane proteins that control the electrical properties of neurons and cardiac cells; mediate the detection and response to sensory stimuli like light sound odor and taste; and regulate the response to physical stimuli like temperature and pressure. In non-excit- able tissues ion channels are instrumental for the regulation of basic salt balance that is critical for homeostasis. Ion channels are located at the surface membrane of cells giving them the unique ability to communicate with the environment as well as the membrane of intracellular organelles allowing them to regulate internal homeostasis. Ion channels are fundamentally important for human health and diseases and are important targets for pharmaceuticals in mental illness heart disease anesthesia pain and other clinical appli- cations. The modern methods used in their study are powerful and diverse ranging from single ion-channel measurement techniques to models of ion channel diseases in animals and human clinical trials for ion channel drugs. Volume II starts with ion channel taxonomy and features coverage of major ion channel families and describes the physiological role structural components gating mechanisms and biophysics permeation and selectivity regulation pharmacology and roles in dis- ease mechanisms. Channels in this volume include voltage-activated sodium calcium and potassium channels inward-rectifier and two-pore domain potassium channels calcium- activated potassium channels cyclic nucleotide-gated channels pacemaker ion channels chloride channels ligand-gated receptors activated by acetylcholine glutamate 5-HT3 GABA and glycine acid-sensing channels P2X receptors TRP channels store-operated channels pressure-activated piezo channels ryanodine receptors and proton channels. All three volumes give the reader an introduction to fundamental concepts needed to understand the mechanism of ion channels; a guide to the technical aspects of ion channel research; offer a modern guide to the properties of major ion channel families; and include coverage of key examples of regulatory physiological and disease roles for ion channels. | Textbook of Ion Channels Volume II Properties Function and Pharmacology of the Superfamilies
