Understanding Optics with Python

Understanding Optics with Python

Optics is an enabling science that forms a basis for our technological civilization. Courses in optics are a required part of the engineering or physics undergraduate curriculum in many universities worldwide. The aim of Understanding Optics with Python is twofold: first to describe certain basic ideas of classical physical and geometric optics; second to introduce the reader to computer simulations of physical phenomena. The text is aimed more broadly for those who wish to use numerical/computational modeling as an educational tool that promotes interactive teaching (and learning). In addition it offers an alternative to developing countries where the necessary equipment to carry out the appropriate experiments is not available as a result of financial constraints. This approach contributes to a better diffusion of knowledge about optics. The examples given in this book are comparable to those found in standard textbooks on optics and are suitable for self-study. This text enables the user to study and understand optics using hands-on simulations with Python. Python is our programming language of choice because of its open-source availability extensive functionality and an enormous online support. Essentials of programming in Python 3. x including graphical user interface are also provided. The codes in the book are available for download on the book’s website. Discusses most standard topics of traditional physical and geometrical optics through Python and PyQt5 Provides visualizations and in-depth descriptions of Python’s programming language and simulations Includes simulated laboratories where students are provided a hands-on exploration of Python software Coding and programming featured within the text are available for download on the book’s corresponding website. Understanding Optics with Python by Vasudevan Lakshminarayanan Hassen Ghalila Ahmed Ammar and L. Srinivasa Varadharajan is born around a nice idea: using simulations to provide the students with a powerful tool to understand and master optical phenomena. The choice of the Python language is perfectly matched with the overall goal of the book as the Python language provides a completely free and easy-to-learn platform with huge cross-platform compatibility where the reader of the book can conduct his or her own numerical experiments to learn faster and better. — Costantino De Angelis University of Brescia Italy Teaching an important programming language like Python through concrete examples from optics is a natural and in my view very effective approach. I believe that this book will be used by students and appreciated greatly by instructors. The topic of modelling optical effects and systems where the students should already have a physical background provides great motivation for students to learn the basics of a powerful programming language without the intimidation factor that often goes with a formal computer science course. — John Dudley FEMTO-ST Institute Besançon France

Fortran 2018 with Parallel Programming

Fortran 2018 with Parallel Programming

The programming language Fortran dates back to 1957 when a team of IBM engineers released the first Fortran Compiler. During the past 60 years the language had been revised and updated several times to incorporate more features to enable writing clean and structured computer programs. The present version is Fortran 2018. Since the dawn of the computer era there had been a constant demand for a “larger” and “faster” machine. To increase the speed there are three hurdles. The density of the active components on a VLSI chip cannot be increased indefinitely and with the increase of the density heat dissipation becomes a major problem. Finally the speed of any signal cannot exceed the velocity of the light. However by using several inexpensive processors in parallel coupled with specialized software and hardware programmers can achieve computing speed similar to a supercomputer. This book can be used to learn the modern Fortran from the beginning and the technique of developing parallel programs using Fortran. It is for anyone who wants to learn Fortran. Knowledge beyond high school mathematics is not required. There is not another book on the market yet which deals with Fortran 2018 as well as parallel programming. FEATURES Descriptions of majority of Fortran 2018 instructions Numerical Model String with Variable Length IEEE Arithmetic and Exceptions Dynamic Memory Management Pointers Bit handling C-Fortran Interoperability Object Oriented Programming Parallel Programming using Coarray Parallel Programming using OpenMP Parallel Programming using Message Passing Interface (MPI) THE AUTHOR Dr Subrata Ray is a retired Professor Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science Kolkata. | Fortran 2018 with Parallel Programming

Handbook of Machining with Grinding Wheels

Handbook of Machining with Grinding Wheels

Grinding is a crucial technology that employs specific abrasive processes for the fabrication of advanced products and surfaces. Handbook of Machining with Grinding Wheels Second Edition highlights important industry developments that can lead to improved part quality higher productivity and lower costs. Divided into two parts the book begins with an explanation of grinding behavior and ends with a focus on new and emerging industrial applications. While the first edition focused on the basics of abrasive machining technology and presented a unified approach to machining with grinding wheels the second edition ties in the continued need for traditional processes in conjunction with the latest applications. This book highlights new research topics that include: nanotechnology alternative energy and additive manufacturing compares related approaches and provides numerous references throughout the book. New in the Second Edition:Contains the latest information on abrasives bonds and dressingUpdates classic stability lobes for grindingIntroduces a new method for tracking dynamic instability in centerless grindingProvides a section in the chapter on ultrasonic-assisted grinding which contains recent work on modelling of the processAdds material on fluid cooling Presents experimental results for in-process feedback to the grinding process Includes new examples on grinding machine technology (particularly for dressing)A single source reference covering every aspect of the grinding process Handbook of Machining with Grinding Wheels functions as a definitive guide to grinding technology for both practicing engineers and students studying graduate-level courses (such as abrasive machining; grinding R&D; metal removal processes; machining of brittle materials; and principles of

Innovative Project Management with FIDIC Contracts

Innovative Project Management with FIDIC Contracts

This book provides comprehensive guidance for the implementation of the legal requirements of FIDIC contracts with a detailed application of modern project management principles. It demonstrates that the FIDIC suites for works and services contain many tools for good project management which can complement the innovation needed today to guide sustainable development. The author’s experience in construction management construction law and the application of FIDIC contracts as a FIDIC engineer a procurement/claims consultant and a FIDIC accredited/certified adjudicator and trainer underpins this unique and much-needed book linking FIDIC contract management with project management practices and concepts. It is structured around project management knowledge areas and details not only the FIDIC works contracts (Red/Yellow/Silver 2017 Reprint 2022 Emerald 2019 Gold 2008 and Green Book 2021) but also the project management requirements of the contract between the Employer and Engineer (White Book 2017) and the FIDIC supply-chain contracts and explains how these all interface in project governance. Linking the project management knowledge areas from the PMBOK® and its Construction Extension with the FIDIC Body of Knowledge (FBOK) the book provides recommendations for integration of best practice and innovations. It illustrates these processes with 54 flowcharts and 16 case studies as well as a railway scenario demonstrating the application of the book’s recommended procedures. This will be an invaluable source of practical guidance for employers contractors and engineers responsible for procuring and managing construction projects. It provides useful insight for technical legal and financial experts on the management of processes contracts and digital tools with recommendations on how to tailor and use the FIDIC contracts for project success. | Innovative Project Management with FIDIC Contracts
