The Playful Politics of Memes

The Playful Politics of Memes

Memes work as rhetorical weapons and discursive arguments in political conflicts. Across digital platforms they confirm contest and challenge political power and hierarchies. They simultaneously create social distortion hostility and a sense of community. Memes thus not only reflect norms but also work as a tool for negotiating them. At the same time memes meld symbolic and cultural elements with technological functionalities allowing for replicability and remixing. This book studies how memes disrupt and reimagine politics in humorous ways. Memes create a playful activity that follows a shared set of rules and gives a (shared) voice which may generate togetherness and political identities but also increase polarization. As their template travels memes continue to appropriate new political contexts and to (re)negotiate frontiers in the political. The chapters in this book allow us to chart the playful politics of memes and how they establish or push frontiers in various political cultural and platform-specific contexts. Taken together memes can challenge and regenerate populism carve out spaces for new identity formations and create togetherness in situations of crises. They can also however lead to the normalization of racist discourses. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students of Media and Communication Studies Information Studies Politics Sociology and Cultural Studies. It was originally published as a special issue of the journal Information Communication & Society.

Climate Change Action and the Responsibility to Protect A Common Cause

Climate Change Action and the Responsibility to Protect A Common Cause

This book brings together two important fields in the study of international politics and policy: climate change adaptation and mitigation (climate action) and the Responsibility to Protect (R2P). Both have attracted strong scholarly attention in each of their respective research silos but there is yet to be a strong research push that explores the relationship between the two. Filling this gap Ben L. Parr argues that the climate action and the R2P agendas share a common goal: to protect vulnerable human populations from large-scale harm. To substantiate this argument Parr reveals where the historical conceptual and operational parallels exist between the two agendas and where and when researchers and practitioners from both camps might work together in practice to achieve their common goal in the challenging years ahead. Notably the book builds on recent efforts by Western governments in the UK US and EU to integrate climate action policies into conflict prevention and response policies. To achieve this the volume situates a variety of climate action policies alongside the 46 policy options found in the R2P operational framework (commonly known as the R2P toolbox) across its prevention reaction and rebuilding phases. Climate Change Action and the Responsibility to Protect will be of significant interest to policy-orientated students and scholars those working at the academic-policy interface in the NGO community as well as those working in government and international organisations. | Climate Change Action and the Responsibility to Protect A Common Cause

Literary Sentiments in the Vernacular Gender and Genre in Modern South Asia

Literary Sentiments in the Vernacular Gender and Genre in Modern South Asia

This collection brings together nine essays accompanied by nine short translations that expand the assumptions that have typically framed literary histories and creatively re-draws their boundaries both temporally and spatially. The essays rooted in the humanities and informed by interdisciplinary area studies explore multiple linkages between forms of print culture linguistic identities and diverse vernacular literary spaces in colonial and post-colonial South Asia. The accompanying translations—from Bengali Hindi Marathi Tamil and Urdu—not only round out these scholarly explorations and comparisons but invite readers to recognise the assiduous intimate and critical labour of expanding access to the vernacular archive while also engaging with the challenges—linguistic cultural and political—of rendering vernacular articulations of gendered experience and embodiment in English. Collectively the essays and translations foreground complex and politicised expressions of gender and genre in fictional and non-fictional print materials and thus draw meaningful connections between the vernacular and literature the everyday and the marginals and gender and sentiment. They expand vernacular literary archives canons and genealogies and push us to theorise the nature of writing in South Asia. Literary Sentiments in the Vernacular is a significant new contribution to South Asian literary history and gender studies and will be a great resource for academics researchers and advanced students of History Literature Cultural Studies Politics and Sociology. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies. | Literary Sentiments in the Vernacular Gender and Genre in Modern South Asia

Vagrant Alcoholics

Vagrant Alcoholics

In the 1970s the vagrant alcoholic was not a new problem and for the previous two hundred years people had asked: What can be done to help them? Why not lock them up? Why don’t they get jobs? Tim Cook had worked for many years with homeless men and in this book originally published in 1975 he describes the problems of vagrant alcoholics and the way in which one voluntary organization the Alcoholics Recovery Project based in South London responded to these problems. The response had in essence been one of experimentation beginning with the first hostel in 1966 the development of non-residential shop fronts in 1970 and the employment of a team of recovered alcoholics in 1974. The Project sought to break down the mistrust surrounding the problem on all sides and to rediscover the potential of the so-called ‘hopeless’ skid row alcoholic. Tim Cook places the Project’s work in the wider context of social work and social responsibility and shows that its methods had relevance for other agencies. He also examines the persistent failure of successive governments to take any positive action to tackle the problems of vagrant alcoholics. Throughout the book the views of the alcoholics themselves are integrated with the attitudes and experiences of the Project workers. The author offers an assessment of the Project’s work and an outline of its limitations stressing that no easy answer exists to this problem. But he believed the Project had made valuable progress towards a greater understanding of the vagrant alcoholic and his milieu.

The Dark Social Online Practices of Resistance Motility and Power

The Dark Social Online Practices of Resistance Motility and Power

This book explores how people interact online through anonymous communication in encrypted hidden or otherwise obscured online spaces. Beyond the Dark Web itself this book examines how the concept of ‘dark social’ broadens the possibilities for examining notions of darkness and sociality in the age of digitality and datafied life. The authors take into account technical moral ethical and pragmatic responses to ourselves and communities seeking to be/belong in/of/ the dark. Scholarship on the Darknet and Dark Social Spaces tends to focus on the uses of encryption and other privacy-enhancing technologies to engender resistance acts. Such understandings of the dark social are naturally in tension with social and political theories which argue that for politics and ‘acts’ to matter they must appear in the public light. They are also in tension with popular narratives of the ‘dark recesses of the web’ which are disparaged by structural powers who seek to keep their subjects knowable and locatable on the clear web. The binary of dark versus light is challenged in this book. The authors’ provocation is that practices of ‘dark’ resistance motility and power are enacted by emerging data cultures. This book draws together scholarship activism and creativity to push past conceptual binary positions and create new approaches to darknet and dark social studies. The Dark Social: Online Practices of Resistance Motility and Power will be a key resource for academics researchers and advanced students of media studies cultural studies communication studies research methods and sociology. This book was originally published as a special issue of Continuum: Journal of Media & Cultural Studies. | The Dark Social Online Practices of Resistance Motility and Power

The Cryptocurrency Phenomenon The Origins Evolution and Economics of Digital Currencies

The Cryptocurrency Phenomenon The Origins Evolution and Economics of Digital Currencies

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the cryptocurrency phenomenon from a financial/monetary point of view. It offers a unique slant in at least two ways with the financial perspective as the reference point. An examination of the technicalities surrounding blockchain and the mining of cryptocurrencies is included but the reading is oriented to those who seek to better understand how these technical issues help to explain the functioning and the potential of cryptocurrencies without touching on coding aspects. Moreover the book addresses cryptocurrencies as an evolution of the concept of money and it frames the analysis to give readers all the knowledge needed to connect the cryptocurrency phenomenon with traditional monetary theories. In so doing cryptocurrencies are not considered as a completely disconnected trend set apart from traditional financial systems but as innovations that will push the concept of money forward without dismantling previous foundations. The book also includes a discussion on central banks and stresses how their initial diffidence toward cryptocurrencies has turned into a more active approach that includes projects to develop the so-called Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC) thereby completing the analysis of the state of the art of the cryptocurrency surge. The mix of theoretical content on the concept of money the description of payment tools and the functioning of the payment industry and the analysis of blockchain and the cryptocurrency markets makes the book interesting reading for researchers scholars and students of economics finance or business enabling them to develop the ability to understand the dynamics of the cryptocurrency phenomenon and its possible evolution. | The Cryptocurrency Phenomenon The Origins Evolution and Economics of Digital Currencies

Moral Rights Creativity and Copyright Law The Death of the Transformative Author

Moral Rights Creativity and Copyright Law The Death of the Transformative Author

This book argues that moral rights provisions in copyright law rest on a misunderstanding or romanticisation of the role of the author. The Romantic conception of authorship as a lone genius creating from nothing sensitive and vulnerable has helped publishers push for strong copyright reform. But is this conception borne out in practice – especially in a world of meme culture of artificial intelligence generated art and poetry and of open source and fan fiction? This book probes the romantic vignette of the author through its legal adoption. Moral rights are rights that attach to the non-economic – for example intellectual or emotional – interests of an author in their work. Much like defamation moral rights see the right of reputation as superior to the right of freedom of expression. However unlike defamation moral rights are not protecting against defamatory actions against a person. In most jurisdictions they are provisions set within copyright regimes; regimes whose purpose is to incentivise innovation. Challenging the way we think about authorship and how it should be protected by law the book draws on a wide range of historical and contemporary examples to demonstrate how moral rights can constitute a barrier to transformative creativity. While authors and artists require strong rights to protect their ability to earn an income and incentivise creativity moral rights the book argues may in turn actually harm their ability to do so. This timely criticism of moral rights will appeal to researchers students policy makers and lawyers working in the area of intellectual property law as well as legal theorists sociolegal scholars and legal historians with relevant interests. | Moral Rights Creativity and Copyright Law The Death of the Transformative Author
