Re-imagining Democracy Legacy Impact and Lessons of Spain's 15-M Movement

Re-imagining Democracy Legacy Impact and Lessons of Spain's 15-M Movement

This interdisciplinary book draws on leading scholarship on one of the most influential and consequential social movements of the past decades: Spain’s 15-M movement. The volume explores the legacy impact and outcomes of the movement and the lessons it offers for understanding mobilization in times of crisis. The book opens with a theoretical reconsideration of the positive ways social movements can impact democracy moving the field forward significantly. It also offers rich case studies to explore a range of areas of interest to social movement scholars. Chapters explore the biographical consequences of participation in social movements; how memories of the movement inspired new mobilizations; the reciprocal influence between the 15-M movement and feminist economics; how urban democracy was transformed by municipalism arising from the movement; how the movement generated a “Caring democracy” in the face of the Covid pandemic; and how it gave rise to a new radical democratic media ecosystem. The book explores the movement’s political economy as well as reflects on one of its unintended consequences: the rise of the penalization of counter-hegemonic protest in contemporary Spain. Although focused on a single emblematic movement it offers significant insights and lessons for scholarship on contemporary politics and movements. Re-imagining Democracy provides a valuable resource for scholars and students interested in the challenges faced by contemporary democracies the dynamics of social movements in times of crisis and the profound impact of social movements on contemporary democracy. The chapters in this book were originally published as a peer-reviewed special issue of Social Movement Studies. | Re-imagining Democracy Legacy Impact and Lessons of Spain's 15-M Movement

Representing Schizophrenia in the Media A Corpus-Based Approach to UK Press Coverage

Representing Schizophrenia in the Media A Corpus-Based Approach to UK Press Coverage

This book presents a critical analysis of ways in which schizophrenia and people with schizophrenia are represented in the press. Interrogating a 15-million-word corpus of news articles published by nine UK national newspapers over a 15-year period the author draws on techniques from corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis to identify the most frequent and salient linguistic features used by journalists to influence and reflect broader public attitudes towards people with schizophrenia. In doing so this book: Evaluates the extent to which media representations are accurate and the extent to which they are potentially helpful or harmful towards people living with schizophrenia; Employs a bottom-up approach guided by linguistic patterns such as collocates and keywords identified by corpus software; Contributes to the de-stigmatisation of schizophrenic disorder by unveiling some of the widespread misconceptions surrounding it; Applies a mixed-methods approach in order to expose attitudes and beliefs found ‘between the lines’ – values and assumptions which are often implicit in the way language is used and therefore not visible to the naked eye. The findings of this monograph will be relevant to advanced students and researchers of health communication corpus linguistics and applied linguistics and will also carry importance for journalists and mental health practitioners. | Representing Schizophrenia in the Media A Corpus-Based Approach to UK Press Coverage

Modern Permanent Magnet Electric Machines Theory and Control

Modern Permanent Magnet Electric Machines Theory and Control

The late 1980s saw the beginning of the PM brushless machine era with the invention of high-energy density permanent magnets (PM) and the development of power electronics. Although induction motors are now the most popular electric motors the impact of PM brushless machines on electromechanical drives is significant. Today PM machines come second to induction machines. Replacement of electromagnetic field excitation systems by PMs brings the following benefits: No electrical energy is absorbed by the field excitation system and thus there are no excitation losses causing substantial increase in efficiency Higher power density (kW/kg) and/or torque density (Nm/kg) than electromagnetic excitation Better dynamic performance than motors with electromagnetic excitation (higher magnetic flux density in the air gap) Simplification of construction and maintenance Less expensive for some types of machines Modern Permanent Magnet Electric Machines: Theory and Control serves as a textbook for undergraduate power engineering students who want to supplement and expand their knowledge in the fundamentals of magnetism soft magnetic materials permanent magnets (PMs) calculation of magnetic circuits with PMs modern PM brushed DC machines and their controls modern PM brushless DC motors and drive control and modern PM generators. The book can help students learn more about electrical machines and can serve as a prescribed text for teaching elective undergraduate courses such as modern permanent magnet electrical machines. Since the book is written in a simple scientific language and without redundant mathematics it can also be used by practicing engineers and managers employed in electrical machinery or electromagnetic device industries. | Modern Permanent Magnet Electric Machines Theory and Control

Archiving Caribbean Identity Records Community and Memory

Archiving Caribbean Identity Records Community and Memory

Archiving Caribbean Identity highlights the Caribbeanization of archives in the region considering what those archives could include in the future and exploring the potential for new records in new formats. Interpreting records in the broadest sense the 15 chapters in this volume explore a wide variety of records that represent new archival interpretations. The book is split into two parts with the first part focusing on record forms that are not generally considered archival in traditional Western practice. The second part explores more traditional archival collections and demonstrates how these collections are analysed and presented from the perspective of Caribbean peoples. As a whole the volume suggests how colonial records can be repurposed to surface Caribbean narratives. Reflecting on the unique challenges faced by developing countries as they approach their archives the volume considers how to identify and archive records in the forms and formats that reflect the postcolonial and decolonized Caribbean how to build an archive of the people that documents contemporary society and reflects Caribbean memory and how to repurpose the colonial archives so that they assist the Caribbean in reclaiming its history. Archiving Caribbean Identity demonstrates how non-textual cultural traces function as archival records and how folk-centred perspectives disrupt conventional understandings of records. The book should thus be of interest to academics and students engaged in the study of archives memory culture history sociology and the colonial and postcolonial experience. | Archiving Caribbean Identity Records Community and Memory

In the Shadow of Transitional Justice Cross-national Perspectives on the Transformative Potential of Remembrance

In the Shadow of Transitional Justice Cross-national Perspectives on the Transformative Potential of Remembrance

This volume bridges two different research fields and the current debates within them. On the one hand the transitional justice literature has been shaken by powerful calls to make the doctrine and practice of justice more transformative. On the other hand collective memory studies now tend to look more closely at meaningful silences to make sense of what nations leave out when they remember their pasts. The book extends the scope of this heuristic approach to the different mechanisms that come under the umbrella of transitional justice including legal prosecution truth-seeking and reparations alongside memorialisation. The 15 chapters included in the volume written by expert scholars from diverse disciplinary and societal backgrounds explore a range of practices intended to deal with the past and how making the invisible visible again can make transitional justice - or indeed any societal engagement with the past - more transformative. Seeking to combine contextual depth and comparative width the book features two key case analyses - South Africa and Sri Lanka - alongside discussions of multiple cases including such emblematic sites as Rwanda and Argentina but also sites better known for resisting than for embracing international norms of transitional justice such as Turkey or Côte d’Ivoire. The different contributions grouped in themed sections progressively explore the issues actors and resources that are typically forgotten when societies celebrate their pasts rather than mourning their losses and in doing so open new possibilities to build more inclusive processes for addressing the present consequences of past injustice. | In the Shadow of Transitional Justice Cross-national Perspectives on the Transformative Potential of Remembrance

Promoting Wellness and Resiliency in Correctional Officers

Promoting Wellness and Resiliency in Correctional Officers

Correctional officers face considerable stress risk and danger that lead to poor physical and mental health outcomes. In fact their life expectancy is 15 years shorter than the national average. Public perception and media portrayals of correctional officers tend to reinforce stereotypes of brutish improper and uncontrolled behavior. Yet the reality is that correctional officers are operating a default public and mental health system for a sizeable portion of our society a responsibility that exposes them to considerable risk. These negative effects have been compounded by an international staffing crisis that has made our jails and prisons far less safe for working officers. To address this situation this book features an examination of a combined 11 313 correctional officers and 42 of their family members in the United States Canada and Europe. It explores proactive strategies that can reduce rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in correctional officers which currently surpasses those found in returning military veterans who experienced combat. It then delves into the dynamics of correctional officer suicide featuring the perspectives of their families. This book highlights innovative approaches that can build on existing strengths including the role of international exchange programs. It presents universal themes that impact the safety wellbeing and resiliency of correctional officers along with positive outcomes related to evidence-based programs that maximize health in the correctional workplace. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students of criminology mental health public policy social work and sociology. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Criminal Justice Studies. | Promoting Wellness and Resiliency in Correctional Officers

The Evolution of Religion and Morality Volume II

The Evolution of Religion and Morality Volume II

This volume draws on a unique dataset to answer pressing questions about human religiosity. Building upon the first volume in this series it presents results from the second phase of the Evolution of Religion and Morality (ERM) project. The second volume investigates key questions in the evolutionary and cognitive sciences of religion and highlights cultural variability and context specificity of diverse religious systems. Chapters draw on a dataset comprising 2 228 participants from 15 ethnographically diverse societies that stretch from Africa and India through Oceania to South America and include hunter-gatherers pastoralists horticulturalists subsistence farmers and wage laborers. Four chapters using the full dataset answer the following questions: What are the general predictors of commitment to supernatural agents? Is there a gender gap in religiosity? Does belief in punitive gods facilitates cooperation? Are supernatural agents implicitly associated with moral concerns? Chapters from individual field sites further explore the distinction between moralizing and local gods the potentially disruptive role of belief in local gods on cooperation with anonymous co-religionists and the relationship between belief in moralizing gods cooperation and differential access to material resources. Above these empirical studies the book also includes an informed discussion with specialists on the challenges of running such a large cross-cultural project and gives concrete recommendations for future projects. The Evolution of Religion and Morality: Volume II will be a key resource for scholars and researchers of religious studies human evolutionary biology psychology anthropology the cultural evolution of religion and the sociology of religion. This book was originally published as a special issue of Religion Brain & Behavior. | The Evolution of Religion and Morality Volume II
