Commonly called the Prickly Pear. This is a very fast growing succulent native to southern and central parts of the American continent and widespread all over the Mediterranean area, where it now grows spontaneously. Large leaves, green and fleshy when young and becoming grey and woody later on. Yellow flowers in April-May, followed by edible berries, yellowish orange when ripe (July-August). Adapts to all soils, even poor, sandy and saline types and likes full sun. Good for rock gardens, withstands drought and can be grown in pots.
