SHENZHEN I/O is a complicated puzzle game in which we design and test electronic circuits. The production was created by the independent studio Zachtronics and in 2015 it made its debut in the Early Access program on Steam. The developer has specialized in creating complex logical and educational titles, the gameplay model of which is inspired by engineering, electronics, programming and chemistry. The team has received well-received and rated games such as SpaceChem , Infinifactory and Ironclad Tactics.
Story
During the campaign, we play the role of a novice engineer who gets a job in an electronics company in the Chinese city of Shenzhen. We get to know individual employees of the team, as well as our boss, thanks to the internal e-mail, which we have permanent access to in the main menu of the title. Through it, we are also informed about the next tasks awaiting us.
Gameplay
SHENZHEN I/O is a simulator of building electronic circuits. Before starting the game, we should familiarize ourselves with the several dozen-page documentation attached to the game, containing information about individual components and how to use and program them. During the game, we design systems from scratch that must perform specific tasks ordered by our boss. One of the first missions is, for example, making a LED lamp controller mounted in a dummy video surveillance camera. Players must program the lights to blink at set intervals. It is worth adding that each time we should pay attention not only to the efficiency of the project, but also its cost. Over time, missions become more and more complex and require a real engineering sense from us.
The creators gave players dozens of components, such as microcontrollers, LED screens, memory dice, etc. The interface is clear and easy to use. We move the parts and connect them with each other with a few mouse clicks. Having selected individual of them, we can program them using the programming language described in the manual. In addition to the campaign, players can also have fun in sandbox mode, where they can freely build their dream systems.
