A Deaf Take on Non-Equivalence in Written Chinese Translation

A Deaf Take on Non-Equivalence in Written Chinese Translation examines the issue of lexical non-equivalence between written Chinese and Hong Kong Sign Language (HKSL) translation describing its theoretical and practical implications. This research foregrounds the semiotic resources in the Deaf community of Hong Kong by analyzing translation strategies exhibited by Deaf Hongkongers when they were invited to translate written Chinese passages with specialized and culturally specific concepts in a monologic setting. With discourse analysis as a framework the major findings of this research were that: (1) a taxonomy of strategies featured depiction manual representations of Chinese characters and visual metonymy writing and mouthing; (2) employment of multisemiotic and multimodal resources gave intended viewers access to different facets of meaning; and (3) repeated renditions of the same concepts gave rise to condensed abbreviated occasionalisms. Observations from this research serve as a point of reference for interpreting scholars practitioners and students as well as policymakers who formulate interpretation service provision and assessment.

Communities Networks and Ethnic Politics

First Published in 1998 this study explores ethnic community political participation in local politics in the North West British town. The analysis is located within the framework of the shift from Fordism to post-Fordism. From 1965 to 1980 ethnic communities increased their access to scarce resources including political influence by engaging in ethnic politics. Using membership of religious organisations as structures of support elected men deployed ethnic identities to compete with others for ethnic support and influence over local decision-making processes. This gave ethnic minorities a positive role in local politics. With the support of local community relations councils (CRCs) ethnic politics flourished. It gave ethnic communities real opportunities to participate as ethnic communities in politics. Using local events ethnic leaders competed for political influence and ethnic support. After 1977 the shift from Fordism to post-Fordism brought about a decline in ethnic political participation. While conferment of citizenship secured their right to stay in Britain the rise in consumerism undermined the manufacturing sector on which they depended for work. This book explores the extent of private companies’ freedom of action during the Nazi period through six case studies of different economic sectors. Since the mid-1990s historical research has intensively discussed the role played by private domestic and foreign enterprises during the ‘Third Reich’. Numerous case studies suggest that even under the extreme ideological circumstances of the ‘Third Reich’ the strategic decisions of private firms followed economic criteria. In fact the regime was especially able to control the economy successfully in those cases in which it operated with economic incentives and gave companies room for manoeuvre. This scope however became increasingly smaller towards the end of the war due to increasing state intervention and government control. First published in 1986. Forty five percent of black women have at least one child by the time they are turn twenty compared to 19 percent of white women. Eight-six percent of the births to black teens occurred to unmarried mothers compared to 30 percent among whites. Research shows that teenage childbearing has negative medical social and economic consequences and that women who first gave birth as teenagers are more likely to raise their families in poverty. In Choice and Circumstance the authors explore tree factors underlying the racial differences in the incidence of early childbearing; information about sex pregnancy and contraception; need for family planning and abortion services; and motivation for postponing parenthood including aspirations for schooling employment plans and desire for children within marriage. They consider which teens postpone sex and pregnancy and why and whether the kinds of motivation necessary to prevent early pregnancy vary by race in the United Sates perhaps explaining the race differences in early childbearing.
