Design and Control of Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System

Design and Control of Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System

The current model for electricity generation and distribution is dominated by centralized power plants which are typically associated with combustion (coal oil and natural gas) or nuclear generation units. These power models require distribution from the center to outlying consumers and have many disadvantages concerning the electric utilities transmission and distribution and greenhouse gas emissions. This resulted in the modelling and development of cleaner renewable power generation with alternative sources such as photovoltaic (PV) wind and other sources. Further due to matured PV technology constant drop-in installation cost greenhouse emissions reductions energy efficiency reduced transmission and distribution investments minimization of electric losses and network support the development of PV systems is proliferating. In view of this development this book provides an idea for setting up the PV plant from initial study of the site to plan sizing. Once the first planning is covered the book focuses on the modeling aspects of power electronics converter and control elements associated with it keeping the operating standards specified for the development of distributed generation systems in check. This book will be useful for industrial professionals and researchers who are working toward modeling of PV plants and their control in grid connected operation. All the necessary information related to these fields is available in the book. | Design and Control of Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System

Development of an Environmental Impact Assessment and Decision Support System for Seawater Desalination Plants

Development of an Environmental Impact Assessment and Decision Support System for Seawater Desalination Plants

Seawater desalination is a coastal-based industry. The growing number of desalination plants worldwide and the increasing size of single facilities emphasises the need for greener desalination technologies and more sustainable desalination projects. Two complementing approaches are the development and implementation of best available technology (BAT) standards and best practice guidelines for environmental impact assessment (EIA) studies. While BAT is a technology-based approach which favours state of the art technologies that reduce resource consumption and waste emissions EIA aims at minimizing impacts at a site- and project-specific level through environmental monitoring evaluation of impacts and mitigation where necessary. This book contains a comprehensive evaluation and synthesis of the potential environmental impacts of desalination plants with emphasis on the marine environment and aspects of energy use followed by the development of strategies for impact mitigating. A concept for BAT for seawater desalination technologies is proposed in combination with a methodological approach for the EIA of desalination projects. The scope of the EIA studies are outlined including environmental monitoring toxicity and hydrodynamic modelling studies and the usefulness of multi-criteria analysis as a decision support tool for EIAs is explored and used to compare different intake and pre-treatment options for seawater reverse osmosis plants. | Development of an Environmental Impact Assessment and Decision Support System for Seawater Desalination Plants

Autotrophic Nitrogen Removal from Low Concentrated Effluents Study of System Configurations and Operational Features for Post-treatment of A

Autotrophic Nitrogen Removal from Low Concentrated Effluents Study of System Configurations and Operational Features for Post-treatment of A

This book reports the first systematic monitoring and modelling study on water availability water quality and seawater intrusion of the Shatt al-Arab River (SAR) on the border of Iraq and Iran where causes and concentration levels of salinity have not yet been fully understood let alone addressed leading to conflicting perceptions of its origin (external or internal) the natural conditions and the practices that can explain the current critical conditions. Current scientific knowledge on the SAR salinity problem is deficient partially due to the complex and dynamic interaction between marine and terrestrial salinity sources including return flows by water users of the different water sectors in the Euphrates and Tigris rivers upstream of the SAR. The development of a new series of monitoring stations and various modelling approaches helped to better understand the interactions between these different sources. The comprehensive and detailed dataset formed the basis for a validated analytical model that can predict the extent of seawater relative to other salinity sources in an estuary and for a hydrodynamic model that can predict salinity changes. The adaptability of the models to changing conditions makes them directly applicable by water managers. The procedure can be applied to other comparable systems. | Autotrophic Nitrogen Removal from Low Concentrated Effluents Study of System Configurations and Operational Features for Post-treatment of A

Guidelines for Slope Performance Monitoring

Guidelines for Slope Performance Monitoring

Although most mining companies utilise systems for slope monitoring experience indicates that mining operations continue to be surprised by the occurrence of adverse geotechnical events. A comprehensive and robust performance monitoring system is an essential component of slope management in an open pit mining operation. The development of such a system requires considerable expertise to ensure the monitoring system is effective and reliable. Written by instrumentation experts and geotechnical practitioners Guidelines for Slope Performance Monitoring is an initiative of the Large Open Pit (LOP) Project and the fifth book in the Guidelines for Open Pit Slope Design series. Its 10 chapters present the process of establishing and operating a slope monitoring system; the fundamentals of pit slope monitoring instrumentation and methods; monitoring system operation; data acquisition management and analysis; and utilising and communicating monitoring results. The implications of increased automation of mining operations are also discussed including the future requirements of performance monitoring. Guidelines for Slope Performance Monitoring summarises leading mine industry practice in monitoring system design implementation system management data management and reporting and provides guidance for engineers geologists technicians and others responsible for geotechnical risk management.
