Modelling Approaches to Understand Salinity Variations in a Highly Dynamic Tidal River The Case of the Shatt al-Arab River

Modelling Approaches to Understand Salinity Variations in a Highly Dynamic Tidal River The Case of the Shatt al-Arab River

This book reports the first systematic monitoring and modelling study on water availability water quality and seawater intrusion of the Shatt al-Arab River (SAR) on the border of Iraq and Iran where causes and concentration levels of salinity have not yet been fully understood let alone addressed leading to conflicting perceptions of its origin (external or internal) the natural conditions and the practices that can explain the current critical conditions. Current scientific knowledge on the SAR salinity problem is deficient partially due to the complex and dynamic interaction between marine and terrestrial salinity sources including return flows by water users of the different water sectors in the Euphrates and Tigris rivers upstream of the SAR. The development of a new series of monitoring stations and various modelling approaches helped to better understand the interactions between these different sources. The comprehensive and detailed dataset formed the basis for a validated analytical model that can predict the extent of seawater relative to other salinity sources in an estuary and for a hydrodynamic model that can predict salinity changes. The adaptability of the models to changing conditions makes them directly applicable by water managers. The procedure can be applied to other comparable systems. | Modelling Approaches to Understand Salinity Variations in a Highly Dynamic Tidal River The Case of the Shatt al-Arab River

CRC Handbook of Medicinal Spices

CRC Handbook of Medicinal Spices

Let food be your medicine medicine your food. Hippocrates 2400 B. C. When the Father of Medicine uttered those famous words spices were as important for medicine embalming preserving food and masking bad odors as they were for more mundane culinary matters. Author James A. Duke predicts that spices such as capsicum cinnamon garlic ginger onion and turmeric will assume relatively more medicinal importance again as the economic costs and knowledge of the side-effects of prescription pharmaceuticals increase. After all each spice contains thousands of useful phytochemicals. Pharmaceuticals usually contain only one or two. Discover the Science behind the FolkloreSpices are important medicines that have withstood the empirical tests of millennia. Nearly 5 000 years ago Charak the father of Ayurvedic medicine claimed that garlic lightens the blood reduces tumors and is an aphrodisiac tonic. Today scientists say it thins the blood prevents cancer and increases libido. For centuries people worldwide have used spices to cure a myriad of ailments and to preserve foods. Now science is proving that these spices may preserve us with their antioxidant and antiseptic activities. Organized by scientific name the CRC Handbook of Medicinal Spices provides the science behind the folklore of over 60 popular spices. For each spice it lists:Scientific nameCommon nameMedicinal activities and indicationsMultiple activitiesOther uses especially culinaryCultivationChemistryImportant phytochemical constituents and their activitiesThe handbook also includes market and import data culinary uses ecology and cultural information and discusses at length the use of spices as antiseptics and antioxidants.

An Introduction to Gauge Theories

An Introduction to Gauge Theories

Written by world-leading experts in particle physics this new book from Luciano Maiani and Omar Benhar with contributions from the late Nicola Cabibbo is based on Feynman’s path integrals. Key elements of gauge theories are described—Feynman diagrams gauge-fixing Faddeev-Popov ghosts—as well as renormalization in Quantum Electrodynamics. Quarks and QCD interactions are introduced. Renormalization group and high momentum behaviour of the coupling constants is discussed in QED and QCD with asymptotic freedom derived at one-loop. These concepts are related to the Higgs boson and models of grand unification. … an excellent introduction to the quantum theory of gauge fields and their applications to particle physics. … It will be an excellent book for the serious student and a good reference for the professional practitioner. Let me add that scattered through the pages we can find occasional traces of Nicola Cabibbo's style. —John Iliopoulos CNRS-Ecole Normale Supérieure
… The volume ends with an illuminating description of the expectation generated by the recent discovery of the Higgs boson combined with the lack of evidence for super-symmetric particles in the mass range 0. 6-1 TeV. —Arturo Menchaca-Rocha FinstP Professor of Physics Mexico’s National Autonomous University Former President of the Mexican Academy of Sciences Presidential Advisor …The reader is masterfully guided through the subtleties of the quantum field theory and elementary particle physics from simple examples in Quantum Mechanics to salient details of modern theory. —Mikhail Voloshin Professor of Physics University of Minnesota | An Introduction to Gauge Theories

On Animation The Director's Perspective Vol 1

On Animation The Director's Perspective Vol 1

Be a fly on the wall as industry leaders Bill Kroyer and Tom Sito take us through insightful face-to-face interviews revealing in these two volumes the journeys of 23 world-class directors as they candidly share their experiences and personal views on the process of making feature animated films. The interviews were produced and edited by Ron Diamond. Your job is not to be the one with the answers. You should be the one that gets the answers. That’s your job. You need to make friends and get to know your crew. These folks are your talent your bag of tricks. And that’s where you’re going to find answers to the big problems - Andrew Stanton It’s hard. Yet the pain you go through to get what you need for your film enriches you and it enriches the film. – Brenda Chapman Frank and Ollie always used to say that great character animation contains movement that is generated by the character’s thought process. It can’t be plain movement. – John Lasseter The beauty of clay is that it doesn’t have to be too polished or too smooth and sophisticated. You don’t want it to be mechanical and lifeless. – Nick Park The good thing about animation is that tape is very cheap. Let the actor try things. This is where animation gets to play with spontaneity. You want to capture that line as it has never been said before. And most likely if you asked the actor to do it again he or she just can’t repeat that exact performance. But you got it. – Ron Clements | On Animation The Director's Perspective Vol 1

Optimization of Industrial Unit Processes

Optimization of Industrial Unit Processes

In Optimization of Industrial Unit Processes the term optimization means the maximizing of productivity and safety while minimizing operating costs. In a fully optimized plant efficiency and productivity are continuously maximized while levels temperatures pressures or flows float within their allowable limits. This control philosophy differs from earlier approaches - where levels and temperatures were controlled at constant values and plant productivity was only an accidental uncontrolled consequence of those controlled variables. With this approach the sides of a multivariable control envelope are the various constraints while inside the envelope the process is continuously moved to maximize efficiency and productivity. Because one must understand a process before one can control it (let alone optimize it) Optimization of Industrial Unit Processes discusses the personality and characteristics of each process in term of its time constants gains and other unique features. This book provides information for engineers who design or operate industrial plants and who seek to increase the profitability of their plants. It recognizes that all industrial processes involve operations such as material transportation heat transfer and reactions. Therefore each plant consists of a combination of basic unit operations and can be optimized by maximizing the efficiency and minimizing the operating cost of the individual unit operations from which it is composed. Optimization of Industrial Unit Processes discusses real world processes - where pipes leak sensors plug and pumps cavitate - offering practical solutions to real problems. Each control system described in the book works illustrating the state of the art in controlling a particular unit operation. This second edition reflects the continual improvement and evolution of control systems as well as anticipates future advances. Bela G. Liptak speaks on Post-Oil Energy Technology on the AT&T Tech Channel.

Privacy in Practice Establish and Operationalize a Holistic Data Privacy Program

Privacy in Practice Establish and Operationalize a Holistic Data Privacy Program

Privacy is not just the right to be left alone but also the right to autonomy control and access to your personal data. The employment of new technologies over the last three decades drives personal data to play an increasingly important role in our economies societies and everyday lives. Personal information has become an increasingly valuable commodity in the digital age. At the same time the abundance and persistence of personal data have elevated the risks to individuals’ privacy. In the age of Big Data the Internet of Things Biometrics and Artificial Intelligence it is becoming increasingly difficult for individuals to fully comprehend let alone control how and for what purposes organizations collect use and disclose their personal information. Consumers are growing increasingly concerned about their privacy making the need for strong privacy champions ever more acute. With a veritable explosion of data breaches highlighted almost daily across the globe and the introduction of heavy-handed privacy laws and regulatory frameworks privacy has taken center stage for businesses. Businesses today are faced with increasing demands for privacy protections ever-more complex regulations and ongoing cybersecurity challenges that place heavy demands on scarce resources. Senior management and executives now acknowledge privacy as some of the biggest risks to the business. Privacy traditionally has existed in a separate realm resulting in an unintentional and problematic barrier drawn between the privacy team and the rest of the organization. With many regulatory frameworks to consider building an all-encompassing data privacy program becomes increasingly challenging. Effective privacy protection is essential to maintaining consumer trust and enabling a robust and innovative digital economy in which individuals feel they may participate with confidence. This book aims at helping organizations in establishing a unified integrated enterprise-wide privacy program. This book is aiming to help privacy leaders and professionals to bridge the privacy program and business strategies transform legal terms and dead text to live and easy-to-understand essential requirements which organizations can easily implement identify and prioritize privacy program gap initiatives and promote awareness and embed privacy into the everyday work of the agency and its staff. | Privacy in Practice Establish and Operationalize a Holistic Data Privacy Program
