Zuidam Dutch Courage Dry Gin Not only do the Zuidam Distillers have a great family of gins under the Dutch Courage label, but they are also hand-made by two generations of distillers, father Fred and son Patrick van Zuidam The term Dutch Courage dates back to the 17th century. It was noted the British saw the effects that drinking the typically Dutch Genever (the precursor to modern gin) had on the Dutch - giving courage before a battle. The term "Dutch Courage" came about.... this may not be 100% true.... but it makes for a great story! So... whilst Zuidam's gins won't necessarily fill you with courage, we certainly believe they will give you a superb drink! Their core gin is made with nine carefully chosen botanicals from around the world ( Angelica, Cardamom, Coriander, Juniper, Lemon, Licorice, Orange, Orris Root and Vanilla). This gives a perfectly layered gin. The initial nose is full of pine and citrus, and a touch of exotic spice from coriander. It entices into the drink - and gives a classic gin aroma. The taste starts full of citrus again, but has notes of spice to it. Violet, anise and juniper (with its pine flavour) also make an appearance. As the drink finishes in the mouth there are flavours of nuts which come through, specifically nutmeg and walnuts. It clears the palate nicely - not overly lingering, and leads this to being a deliciously dry, and easy to drink gin. We do like this one with Fever-Tree Indian Tonic though. 50ml of the gin to 150ml of tonic works well. Plenty of ice, and a citrus garnish. Being slightly stronger, this also holds its flavour and works well in cocktails. We particularly liked this in a French 75.

The recipe, a secret blend of 56 ingredients, has remained unchanged since its creation. Whilst the exact recipe remains unknown to most, it has botanicals from across the world. It is from here that Gin Mare have taken inspiration for their new Gin, ten years after creating their iconic Mediterranean gin. In a beautiful blue glass bottle, inspiration has been taken from the famous Blue Caves of Capri, and the quality feel continues with a canvas printed label. A collar label, in the shape of the Island rounds this off hung delicately from the neck of the bottle. Two new ingredients make themselves known in this edition; In keeping with their other botanicals (all from the mediterranean region) these are Lemons from Capri and bergamot. These are added to the distinctive, mediterranean botanicals found in Gin Mare, being Arbequina Olives from Spain, Basil from Italy, Rosemary from Greece, and Thyme from Turkey. They keep the same artisinal approach in making this gin as they do in the original Gin Mare. The citrus fruits are all peeled by hand, before being macerated for 12 months in small containers. J&B Rare Whisky The history behind J&B (Justerini & Brooks) goes back to 1749, when it was founded as a Fine Wine & Spirits merchant to supply the aristocratic houses of London. It even went on to supply every British Monarch since King George III in 1761. This, their J&B Rare Whisky first went on sale in 1933 following the end of prohibition in the US. The blend contains a total of 42 different single malt and grain whiskies from Scotland. These include distilleries like Knockando, Auchroisk and Glen Spey. Whilst the whisky was created with mixing in mind - it is most definitely versatile enough to be enjoyed neat, or on the rocks - with its smooth, fruity taste being enjoyed however you like. On the nose there are notes or orange zest and malt, with warming caramel, apples and walnuts. The palate is balanced, smooth and full of ripe fruit - with the malt and a delicate toffee sweetness. As the drink finishes, it remains exeptionally balanced - lingering, but not overly so to a medium finish with woody oak and a touch of cinnamon spice.  More from J&B Perfect Serve Whilst this is a whisky which is easily enjoyed on its own - we really liked this in a Whisky Ginger. Take a tall glass filled with ice and add 50ml of the whisky. Gently pour over 150ml of your favourite ginger ale (we liked it with Thomas Henry Ginger Ale). Stir gently and add a slice or wedge of lime.

Doragrossa Selezioni Vermouth Rosso Turin was once known as the capital of Liqueurs. It's location, surrounded by fertile land, rich in herbs, flowers and fruits, and its closeness to the port of Genoa where marketplaces were overflowing with exotic spices meant that many artisans gathered in the Contrada (district or quarter) Dora Gross and developed increasingly refined techniques and trades. It's this nod to history, which is reflected in their name, and the botanicals they use which makes Doragrossa unique. Their Selezioni range of vermouth, bitter and gin were created to enable the creation of the most popular Italian drinks. These drinks are made for mixing, but flavourful enough to also be enjoyed neat. At the end of the 18th Century fortified wines (Vermouths) were growing in popularity around the world. It was later on that the Rosso versions became popular. This has an enticing aroma of absinthe, and citrus fruits. The palate is complex, with honts of ginger, cinnamon, angelica and orange. These join with bitterness from chamomile, gentian, rhubarb and cinchiona. Grant's Triple Wood Whisky It was in 1887 that William Grant opened his distillery, and it was very much a family affair.... he was helped by his seven sons and two daughters. In fact, to this day, (six generations from when it started), Grant's is still family owned, and stays true to the founders original (and closely guarded) recipe. Three's play a big part in Grant's Whisky, from the three sided bottle, to their three ingredients' of Scottish water, Air and Barley. However it's their Triple Wood, held in their name and process which makes them quite different. They mature their whisky in three different types of barrels; Virgin Oak (providing a robust spiciness), American Oak (giving a smooth vanilla flavour) and Bourbon refill (which gives a brown sugar sweetness, and a smooth mellow taste). Once matured, these are blended to give the Grant's Triple Wood Whisky which is known and loved the world over. On the nose this is a whisky with a complex aroma, blending ripe pear and delicious summer fruits. On the palate this has a vanilla sweetness, which is perfectly balanced with notes of malt, and light florals. The finish is pleasantly long, with a balanced palate of sweet and smoky.
