"Non lasciare che mi uccidano" sono le prime parole pronunciate dal vecchio dopo giorni di silenzio. Di quell'uomo, che sembra non poter o non voler ricordare, emergono faticosamente brandelli di un passato drammatico. Il suo nome è Vasilij Nesterenko, e non è un uomo qualunque. È un fisico nucleare che lavorava per l'esercito sovietico, e nel 1986, quando si è verificato l'incidente alla centrale di Cernobyl, ha fatto parte dell'équipe di scienziati chiamati all'impresa disperata di estinguere l'incendio del reattore numero 4. Nesterenko ha visto e sa. Troppo. Per questo le autorità lo hanno minacciato, per questo è fuggito. Eppure il suo primo pensiero è quello di tornare a Pripjat', la città fantasma, a tre chilometri dalla centrale, in cui sopravvivono i suoi ultimi e più vividi ricordi. Ramingo in quel paesaggio da fine del mondo abitato da saccheggiatori, disertori della guerra in Cecenia e cani randagi, Nesterenko si è rifugiato nell'autoscontro di un luna park e ha fraternizzato con i "coloni della vita radioattiva", coloro che a Pripjat' sono rimasti perché hanno superato la paura dell'atomo, o perché "non li hanno voluti in nessun altro posto". Liberamente ispirato alla lotta dello scienziato che cercò di far conoscere al mondo la verità su Cernobyl.
