This book was inspired by a lecture on the work of Gerhard Richter, in which the concept emerged of the 'first work' as the work in which the artist recognized himself for the first time. The curators found the idea of an artist looking at his or her method by way of the 'first work' intriguing, and wondered what other artists would choose as their number one. The submissions received for this book reveal the artists' ways of thinking from a new angle, and, together, form a remarkable document of the creative process.

Although best known for his small-scale intimate collages of film stills, postcards and other found imagery, John Stezaker's silkscreens reveal another side of the artist. A comprehensive group of these mid- to large-scale silkscreens (1977-94) are brought together here for the first time. They include manipulated imagery of kissing couples, disembodied men and woman, floating baby-heads as well as film stills. While, at first, this body of work seems to stand in contrast to the collages, the silkscreens employ many of the same techniques - cutting out, cropping, slicing and over-laying - that are seen throughout Stezaker's practice. Over 80 images are accompanied by an essay Caoimh n Mac Giolla L ith, the first text to discuss the artist's silkscreens as a whole body of work.

Sophy Rickett's work explores the competing forces of light and darkness in defining and articulating space, often alluding to a sense of the infinite. Made mainly at night, and often in peripheral or mundane environments, her work ponders the potential of photography to conceal as much as reveal. In both color and black & white, her photographs cohere around strong formal properties, and are often minimal in character, playing on the latent narrative possibilities of place. This book surveys Rickett's work from the mid-nineties to the present; from her early performative series through to the successive series of nocturnal landscapes, made in the UK, Italy and Japan, for which she has achieved international recognition.

In 1150 AD, Bhaskaracarya (b. 1114 AD), renowned mathematician and astronomer of Vedic tradition composed Lilavati as the first part of his larger work called Siddhanta Siromani, a comprehensive exposition of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, number theory and related topics. Lilavati has been used as a standard textbook for about 800 years. This lucid, scholarly and literary presentation has been translated into several languages of the world. Bhaskaracarya himself never gave any derivations of his formulae. N.H. Phadke (1902-1973) worked hard to construct proofs of several mathematical methods and formulae given in original Lilavati. The present work is an enlargement of his Marathi work and attempts a thorough mathematical explanation of definitions, formulae, short cuts and methodology as intended by Bhaskara. Stitches are followed by literal translations so that the reader can enjoy and appreciate the beauty of accurate and musical presentation in Lilavati. The book is useful to school going children, sophomores, teachers, scholars, historians and those working for cause of mathematics.

In his work on rings of operators in Hilbert space, John von Neumann discovered a new mathematical structure that resembled the lattice system Ln. In characterizing its properties, von Neumann founded the field of continuous geometry. This book, based on von Neumann's lecture notes, begins with the development of the axioms of continuous geometry, dimension theory, and--for the irreducible case--the function D(a). The properties of regular rings are then discussed, and a variety of results are presented for lattices that are continuous geometries, for which irreducibility is not assumed. For students and researchers interested in ring theory or projective geometries, this book is required reading.
