Building a Programmable Logic Controller with a PIC16F648A Microcontroller

Building a Programmable Logic Controller with a PIC16F648A Microcontroller

Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are extensively used in industry to perform automation tasks with manufacturers offering a variety of PLCs that differ in functions program memories and the number of inputs/outputs (I/O). Not surprisingly the design and implementation of these PLCs have long been a secret of manufacturers. Unveiling the mysteries of PLC technology Building a Programmable Logic Controller with PIC16F648A Microcontroller explains how to design and use a PIC16F648A-microcontroller-based PLC. The author first described a microcontroller-based implementation of a PLC in a series of articles published in Electronics World magazine between 2008 and 2010. This book is based on an improved version of the project including:Updates to the hardware configuration with a smaller CPU board and two I/O extension boards that now support 16 inputs and 16 outputs instead of 8An increased clock frequency of 20 MHzImprovements to several macrosFlowcharts to help you understand the macros (functions)In this book the author provides detailed explanations of hardware and software structures. He also describes PIC Assembly macros for all basic PLC functions which are illustrated with numerous examples and flowcharts. An accompanying downloadable resources contain source files (. ASM) and object files (. HEX) for all of the examples in the book. It also supplies printed circuit board (PCB) (Gerber and . pdf) files so that you can have the CPU board and I/O extension boards produced by a PCB manufacturer or produce your own boards. Making PLCs more easily accessible this unique book is written for advanced students practicing engineers and hobbyists who want to learn how to build their own microcontroller-based PLC. It assumes some previous knowledge of digital logic design microcontrollers and PLCs as well as familiarity with the PIC16F series of microcontrollers and w | Building a Programmable Logic Controller with a PIC16F648A Microcontroller

Data Center Storage Cost-Effective Strategies Implementation and Management

Data Center Storage Cost-Effective Strategies Implementation and Management

We overspend on data center storage … yet we fall short of business requirements. It's not about the technologies. It's about the proper application of technologies to deliver storage services efficiently and affordably. It’s about meeting business requirements dependent on data center storage. Spend less deliver more. Data Center Storage: Cost-Effective Strategies Implementation and Management provides an industry insider’s insight on how to properly scope plan evaluate and implement storage technologies to maximize performance capacity reliability and power savings. It provides business and use-case focused coverage of storage technology including storage area networks (SAN) capacity-optimized drives and solid-state drives. It offers key insights on financially responsible spending for data center storage. Delivered in accessible language the book starts with a discussion of the business merits of replacing direct attached compartmentalized storage with consolidated SAN-attached storage. The author advises on the use of service level applications (SLAs) as a tool to drive business unit collaboration with IT and prioritize those actions that impact productivity and profit from those that are less critical. This business guide to applied technologies disassembles big problems into digestible segments to help you understand quantify and fix any problems that arise as you work towards meeting your growing storage needs. The book builds on the consolidation and SLA driven approach to take advantage of the compelling benefits and potential savings of managed hosting and cloud storage. | Data Center Storage Cost-Effective Strategies Implementation and Management

War and Intervention in the Transnational Public Sphere Problem-solving and European identity-formation

War and Intervention in the Transnational Public Sphere Problem-solving and European identity-formation

The post-Cold War era saw an unexpected increase in intra-state violence against ethnic and religious groups brutal civil wars and asymmetric conflicts. Those crises posed fundamental questions for the European Union and its member states to which Europe has so far proven unable to develop satisfactory answers. This book contends that public debates over wars and humanitarian military interventions after the Cold War represent an evolving process of comprehension and collective interpretation of new realities. Employing innovative computer-linguistic methods it examines the dynamics of this debate across Europe and compares it to that of the United States. In doing so it argues that transnational political communication has shaped European identity-formation in significant ways and that in trying to come to terms with important crises and institutional events shared understandings of Europe have emerged. Looking at evidence from a wide range of countries including Austria France Germany Ireland the Netherlands and the United Kingdom and spanning a continuous period of 16 years this book empirically analyses these shared understandings of the EU as a problem-solving and ethical community. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations EU politics security studies comparative politics political communication and European integration. | War and Intervention in the Transnational Public Sphere Problem-solving and European identity-formation

Health and Medical Geography

Health and Medical Geography

Why are rainfall carcinogens and primary care physicians distributed unevenly over space? The fourth edition of the leading text in the field has been updated and reorganized to cover the latest developments in disease ecology and health promotion across the globe. The book accessibly introduces the core questions and perspectives of health and medical geography and presents cutting-edge techniques of mapping and spatial analysis. It explores the intersecting genetic ecological behavioral cultural and socioeconomic processes that underlie patterns of health and disease in particular places including how new diseases and epidemics emerge. Geographic dimensions of health care access and service provision are addressed. More than 100 figures include 16 color plates; most are available as PowerPoint slides at the companion website. New to This Edition: *Chapters on the political ecology of health; emerging infectious diseases and landscape genetics; food diet and nutrition; and urban health. *Coverage of Middle East respiratory syndrome Ebola and Zika; impacts on health of global climate change; contaminated water crises in economically developed countries including in Flint Michigan; China's rapid industrial growth; and other timely topics. *Updated throughout with current data and concepts plus advances in GIS. Pedagogical Features: *End-of-chapter review questions and suggestions for further reading. *Section Introductions that describe each chapter. *Quick Reviews-within-chapter recaps of key concepts. *Bold-faced key terms and an end-of-book glossary.
