Aviation Design and Innovation

Aviation Design and Innovation

In order to facilitate the safe efficient and cost effective exchange of passengers and cargo between ground and sky airports require the provision of adequate runways aircraft manoeuvring areas cargo sheds and passenger processing facilities. Airports are capital intensive facilities and planning errors which result in the over or under-provision of capacity are both costly and problematic to rectify and so understanding the optimal configuration of passenger terminals is paramount. Of course the design of passenger terminal buildings is influenced not only by levels of demand the commercial requirements of airlines and tenant companies the availability of investment funds and political influence but also by the aircraft that will be using the facility both now and in the future. Indeed the introduction of the first generation of passenger jets in the 1950s and higher-capacity wide-bodied aircraft in the late 1960s required not only the expansion of gate areas and passenger processing facilities but also the introduction of new technologies such as the travelator the baggage reclaim carousel and the airbridge. The introduction of the A380 ‘Super Jumbo’ into revenue passenger service in 2007 similarly demanded a reconfiguration of the airports it serves and practitioners need to be cognisant of the options for accommodating a new generation of large aircraft. While large aircraft generally require a lengthy turn around period between flights and the extensive provision of expensive fixed ground support infrastructure low cost carriers pursue a business model based on very short turnarounds and minimal use of airport infrastructure assets such as airbridges. One of the main challenges facing airport operators is how to accommodate the diverse and dynamic requirements of different operators and these issues are addressed in this Volume. Traditionally aircraft were made and manufactured by small companies within one country but as costs have increased and technology has become more sophisticated a relatively small number of manufacturers which are supported by international supply chains have come to dominate the commercial aircraft market. Originally all aviation jet fuels were derived from crude oil. However concerns about future oil supply and energy security combined with the need to improve aviation’s environmental performance and sustainability has driven the development of alternative fuel sources. However the development and adoption of alternative aviation fuels is not straightforward and the Volume examines the opportunities and challenges of widespread biofuel adoption in terms of production capacity emissions reductions cost and commercial viability. The final essays in this Volume address business model innovation in the airline and airport sector and include considerations of the future evolution of low cost carriers the potential for airline-airport alliances and the development of multi-airport multinational operating companies. | Aviation Design and Innovation

The Routledge Handbook of Material Religion

The Routledge Handbook of Material Religion

The Routledge Handbook of Material Religion places objects and bodies at the center of scholarly studies of religious life and practice. Propelling forward the study of material religion the Handbook first reveals the deep philosophical roots of its key categories and then advances new critical analytics such as queer materialities inescapable material entanglements and hyperobjects that explode the small-scale personal view on religions. The Handbook comprises thirty chapters written by an international team of contributors who offer a global perspective of religious pasts and presents divided into four thematic parts: Genealogies of Material Religion Materializing the Terms of the Study of Religion Entanglements Entrapment Escaping Hyperobjects or How Ginormous Things Affect Religions In these four parts the study of material religion is redirected towards systematic critical interrogations of the imbrication of religious structures of power with racial economic political and gendered forms of domination. From Spinoza’s political theology to African philosophies of ubuntu; from the queer materialities of Mesoamerican religion to the Satanic Temple of the United States; from Islamic love and sacrifice in human-animal entanglements to Shia militants’ attachment to weaponry; from epidemic cataclysm in Latin America to vast infrastructures and the gathering of millions in India’s Kumbh Mela the study of material religion proves to be the study par excellence of the human condition. The Handbook is essential reading for students and researchers in religious studies anthropology history and media studies and will also be of interest to those in related fields such as archeology sociology and philosophy.

Industrial Photoinitiators A Technical Guide

Industrial Photoinitiators A Technical Guide

The use of photoinitiators in the UV curing process shows remarkable possibilities in myriad applications. Highlighting critical factors such as reactivity cure speeds and application details Industrial Photoinitiators: A Technical Guide is a practical accessible industrially oriented text that explains the theory describes the products and outlines the practice in simple language for the novice and expert alike. The basics of UV light The book begins by examining the nature of UV light and the types of commercial UV lamps that are available. It discusses the light absorption process and the excited states that are produced by the photoinitiator prior to the production of radicals. Next the book examines the structure of the photoinitiator and the mechanism by which a reactive species is formed along with the deactivating processes that inhibit the various photophysical and photochemical steps that occur as radicals are produced. Commercial photoinitiators Providing a list of companies and suppliers the author explores the distinct groups of commercial photoinitiators and the variations in their structure. He describes the factors that determine which photoinitiators should be chosen for a particular application and how the different types are used. He also explains the reasons why a cured coating may display yellowing and describes the use of stabilizers to reduce the yellowing effect. Cationic curing Exploring a small but growing area of interest in the UV curing industry the book concludes by discussing cationic curing and examines the different scope of parameters and different chemistry involved. It also describes factors that affect the use of cationic photoinitiators. Based on more than 30 years of experience working with photoinitiators W. Diagnostic MRI in Dogs and Cats

Diagnostic MRI in Dogs and Cats

Diagnostic MRI in Dogs and Cats makes the vast and increasingly complex topic of clinical MRI in small animals accessible to all veterinarians. With the increasing availability of MRI technology there is also a pressing need for expertise in interpreting these images. This is the first reference textbook to provide a well-illustrated and comprehensive overview of the current knowledge focusing on imaging appearance rather than on clinical signs or treatment. With chapters on MRI physics and technology as well as sections on specific anatomical regions the book functions as a stand-alone reference for the reader whether they be a radiology/neurology resident in training or a practitioner with a need to learn about veterinary clinical MRI. Includes both evidenced-based material and the authors' personal experience providing an excellent overview of current knowledge in the field. Contributors are international leaders in the field. Bullet points format and table summaries throughout the book keep the concepts concise and organized. Richly illustrated with over 650 annotated images showcasing the main features of the disease processes. Images are obtained at all magnet field strengths so as to reflect the current reality of veterinary MRI which uses low- mid- and high-field magnets. The chapters on physics and MRI technology are concise and accessible using many visual aids and diagrams and avoiding abstract concepts and equations whenever possible. Within each anatomical section each chapter focuses on a disease category of that body region. When it is important to understand the imaging appearance the pathophysiology is reviewed and imaging features of prognostic relevance are detailed.
