New!  Primula ‘Pollyanna Frosty White’ is a delightful addition to our range at Golden Valley Plants. What sets these primulas apart is their extended flowering season. We suggest planting them in early spring, and with regular deadheading, they will continue to bloom through to May. The first flowers emerge close to the plant on primrose stems, followed by a profusion of long stems typical of polyanthus, each holding double flower heads above the lush green foliage. Compact and hardy, these plants provide vibrant colour throughout spring, no matter the weather. The white petals of Pollyanna ‘Frosty White’ are particularly striking, making them perfect for both borders and patio pots. For a stunning spring border, we recommend combining them with heucheras, astilbes, and hostas. In patio containers, they pair beautifully with other hardy perennials like tiarella and ferns. By choosing perennial plants, you’ll enjoy their beauty year after year.

Cordyline Red Star 10L (80-100cm)

Cordylines are fairly easy to grow, will tolerate most soil types that are moist but well-drained, can be grown in full sun or partial shade and require a sheltered location. During the first year give it a good water once a week during drier spells, but once established it is fairly drought tolerant, although container grown plants will still require watering. Regular pruning is not required but dead leaves should be cut back as close to the main trunk as possible. If your plant is old enough to produce flowers these can be cut right back when they have died. Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, liquid fertiliser. This variety is not winter hardy variety so prevent damage by tying up the foliage to reduce wind damage to the leaves and prevent water collecting around growing points which can cause rotting. Wrap the trunk with layers of fleece and place a 15cm (6in) layer of mulch, such as bark, over the root area.

Echinacea are low maintenance plants provided you give them a sunny spot and a well-drained soil, these perennials don’t like wet feet in the winter. The best flower colour occurs in a sunny position. During the first year keep the soil moist, but once established they are fairly drought tolerant. If you see leaves wilting or drooping, dry or cracked soil, or dry leaves that turn yellow, you should water your plant right away. If you see any of the characteristics just mentioned, be sure to give your plant a good watering, and then pay close attention to it for the next few weeks to be sure it is getting the moisture that it needs. In general, keep Echinacea on a lean diet, just fertilising once in the spring with an organic fertiliser. Remove faded flowers to prolong flowering. Cut down to soil level after they stop blooming or after a frost. Alternatively, you can leave the seed heads as they are over the winter. This can help promote self-seeding.

Citrus Mini Calamondin Bush (Pot Size: 15cm)

With her diminutive charm, the mini ornamental Calamondin bush asks for little but gives abundantly. From early spring she will grace you with delicate, white blossoms, her soft, orange perfume adding a sweet citrusy fragrance to your conservatory, patio or balcony. The calamondin is a petite fruit hailing from the Orient and often given as a gift during the Chinese New Year to signify good luck. These firm-skinned tiny, tangy, treasures grow plentifully among glossy dark green leaves and are perfect for a zesty pick-me-up. Sharp-tasting and small, round, orange fruits grow up to 4cm in diameter with a fine rind that loosens on ripening. Standing at around 40cm tall (including the pot), this easy-care citrus bush will be delivered with fruits on and has the potential to produce fruit each year, providing conditions are right. We will always pick the best plant on our nursery for you, however, please note that fruit on your citrus plant is not guaranteed, as this will be dependent on the time of year – with fruits being produced normally from beginning of autumn for most varieties. Plants ordered later in the season are more likely to drop their fruits in transit or may be despatched without fruit if they have finished producing. With correct feeding and care they will continue to fruit with the next cycle. As fruits ripen, they may also develop in colour. E.g. limes will show yellow or orange when they are ripe. The limes we know from supermarkets are picked immature to retain acidity and firmness and as such are green.
