Developmental Macroeconomics New Developmentalism as a Growth Strategy

Developmental Macroeconomics New Developmentalism as a Growth Strategy

Developmental Macroeconomics: Access to Demand the Exchange Rate and Growth offers a new approach to development economics and macroeconomics. It is a Keynesian-structuralist approach to economics applied to middle income countries that emphasizes the strategic role of demand in creating investment opportunities that are essential to economic development. It also explores crucial links between short-term full employment and financial stability with medium term growth. While this book emphasizes the central role played by the exchange rate it does not ignore other macroeconomic prices (the interest rate the inflation rate and the profit rate). It develops a group of concepts and models and blends them together in the model of the tendency to the cyclical overvaluation of the exchange rate in developing countries. According to this model the exchange rate tends to be chronically overvalued. In so far that this is true the exchange rate ceases to be just a short-term problem to be treated by macroeconomics and becomes central to development economics and should be crucially oriented to manage the exchange rate and keep it competitive at the industrial equilibrium level. The book closes with the presentation of new developmentalism – a national development strategy based on the system of models previously discussed that is both an alternative to old national-developmentalism and to liberal orthodoxy or the Washington consensus. | Developmental Macroeconomics New Developmentalism as a Growth Strategy

British Rock Modernism 1967-1977 The Story of Music Hall in Rock

British Rock Modernism 1967-1977 The Story of Music Hall in Rock

British Rock Modernism 1967-1977 explains how the definitive British rock performers of this epoch aimed not at the youthful rebellion for which they are legendary but at a highly self-conscious project of commenting on the business in which they were engaged. They did so by ironically appropriating the traditional forms of Victorian music hall. Faulk focuses on the mid to late 1960s when British rock bands who had already achieved commercial prominence began to aspire to aesthetic distinction. The book discusses recordings such as the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour album the Kinks' The Village Green Preservation Society and the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols and television films such as the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour and the Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus that defined rock's early high art moment. Faulk argues that these 'texts' disclose the primary strategies by which British rock groups mostly comprised of young working and lower middle-class men made their bid for aesthetic merit by sampling music hall sounds. The result was a symbolically charged form whose main purpose was to unsettle the hierarchy that set traditional popular culture above the new medium. Rock groups engaged with the music of the past in order both to demonstrate the comparative vitality of the new form and signify rock's new art status compared to earlier British pop music. The book historicizes punk rock as a later development of earlier British rock rather than a rupture. Unlike earlier groups the Sex Pistols did not appropriate music hall form in an ironic way but the band and their manager Malcolm McLaren were obsessed with the meaning of the past for the present in a distinctly modernist fashion. | British Rock Modernism 1967-1977 The Story of Music Hall in Rock

Cross-cultural Communication Perspectives in Theory and Practice

Cross-cultural Communication Perspectives in Theory and Practice

Cross-Cultural Communication is a collection of essays that examines how practitioners can improve the acceptance of their documentation when communicating to cultures other than their own. The essays begin by examining the cross-cultural issues relating to quality in documentation. From there the essays look at examples of common documents analysing them from several perspectives. Specifically the author uses communication theories (such as Bernstein's Elaborated and Restricted Code theory and Marwell and Schmidt's Compliance-Gaining theory) to show how documents used by readers who are not native speakers of English can be written and organized to increase their effectiveness. The principal assumption about how practitioners create their documents is that while large organizations can afford to write translate and then localize small- to medium-size organizations produce many documents that are used directly by people in other cultures-often without translating and localizing. The advantage the writer gains from these essays is in understanding the strategies and knowing the kinds of strategies to apply in specific situations. In addition the essays can serve as a valuable resource for students and teachers alike as they determine ways to understand how cross-cultural communication is different and why it makes a difference. Not only do students need to be aware of the various strategies they may apply when creating documents for cross-cultural settings they also need to see how research can apply theories from different areas-in the case of these essays communication and rhetorical theories. Another value of the essays is to show the students the role standards play in cross-cultural communication; standards are written by committees that follow style rules developed by the International Standardization Organization in Geneva. Thus both students and practitioners can find valuable cross-cultural communication advice in these essays. | Cross-cultural Communication Perspectives in Theory and Practice
