Modern Optimization Methods for Decision Making Under Risk and Uncertainty

Modern Optimization Methods for Decision Making Under Risk and Uncertainty

The book comprises original articles on topical issues of risk theory rational decision making statistical decisions and control of stochastic systems. The articles are the outcome of a series international projects involving the leading scholars in the field of modern stochastic optimization and decision making. The structure of stochastic optimization solvers is described. The solvers in general implement stochastic quasi-gradient methods for optimization and identification of complex nonlinear models. These models constitute an important methodology for finding optimal decisions under risk and uncertainty. While a large part of current approaches towards optimization under uncertainty stems from linear programming (LP) and often results in large LPs of special structure stochastic quasi-gradient methods confront nonlinearities directly without need of linearization. This makes them an appropriate tool for solving complex nonlinear problems concurrent optimization and simulation models and equilibrium situations of different types for instance Nash or Stackelberg equilibrium situations. The solver finds the equilibrium solution when the optimization model describes the system with several actors. The solver is parallelizable performing several simulation threads in parallel. It is capable of solving stochastic optimization problems finding stochastic Nash equilibria and of composite stochastic bilevel problems where each level may require the solution of stochastic optimization problem or finding Nash equilibrium. Several complex examples with applications to water resources management energy markets pricing of services on social networks are provided. In the case of power system regulator makes decision on the final expansion plan considering the strategic behavior of regulated companies and coordinating the interests of different economic entities. Such a plan can be an equilibrium − a planned decision where a company cannot increase its expected gain unilaterally. | Modern Optimization Methods for Decision Making Under Risk and Uncertainty

Computational Approaches for the Prediction of pKa Values

Computational Approaches for the Prediction of pKa Values

The pKa of a compound describes its acidity or basicity and therefore is one of its most important properties. Its value determines what form of the compound—positive ion negative ion or neutral species—will be present under different circumstances. This is crucial to the action and detection of the compound as a drug pollutant or other active chemical agent. In many cases it is desirable to predict pKa values prior to synthesizing a compound and enough is now known about the salient features that influence a molecule’s acidity to make these predictions. Computational Approaches for the Prediction of pKa Values describes the insights that have been gained on the intrinsic and extrinsic features that influence a molecule’s acidity and discusses the computational methods developed to estimate acidity from a compound’s molecular structure. The authors examine the strengths and weaknesses of the theoretical techniques and show how they have been used to obtain information about the acidities of different classes of chemical compounds. The book presents theoretical methods for both general and more specific applications covering methods for various acids in aqueous solutions—including oxyacids and related compounds nitrogen acids inorganic acids and excited-state acids—as well as acids in nonaqueous solvents. It also considers temperature effects isotope effects and other important factors that influence pKa. This book provides a resource for predicting pKa values and understanding the bases for these determinations which can be helpful in designing better chemicals for future uses.

The Silicon Web Physics for the Internet Age

The Silicon Web Physics for the Internet Age

The technology behind computers fiber optics and networks did not originate in the minds of engineers attempting to build an Internet. The Internet is a culmination of intellectual work by thousands of minds spanning hundreds of years. We have built concept upon concept and technology upon technology to arrive at where we are today in a world constructed of silicon pathways and controlled by silicon processors. From computers to optical communications The Silicon Web: Physics for the Internet Age explores the core principles of physics that underlie those technologies that continue to revolutionize our everyday lives. Designed for the nonscientist this text requires no higher math or prior experience with physics. It starts with an introduction to physics silicon and the Internet and then details the basic physics principles at the core of the information technology revolution. A third part examines the quantum era with in-depth discussion of digital memory and computers. The final part moves onto the Internet era covering lasers optical fibers light amplification and fiber-optic and wireless communication technologies. The relation between technology and daily life is so intertwined that it is impossible to fully understand modern human experience without having at least a basic understanding of the concepts and history behind modern technology which continues to become more prevalent as well as more ubiquitous. Going beyond the technical the book also looks at ways in which science has changed the course of history. It clarifies common misconceptions while offering insight on the social impacts of science with an emphasis on information technology. As a pioneering researcher in quantum mechanics of light author Michael Raymer has made his own significant contributions to contemporary communications technology | The Silicon Web Physics for the Internet Age

Cognitive Dependability Engineering Managing Risks in Cyber-Physical-Social Systems under Deep Uncertainty

Cognitive Dependability Engineering Managing Risks in Cyber-Physical-Social Systems under Deep Uncertainty

The work is a context-oriented analysis and synthesis of complex engineered systems to ensure continuous and safe operations under conditions of uncertainty. The book is divided in four parts the first one comprises an overview of the development of systems engineering: starting with basics of Systems Science and Single Systems Engineering through System of Systems Engineering to Cognitive Systems Engineering. The Cognitive Systems Engineering model was based on the concept of imperfect knowledge acquisition and management. The second part shows the evolutionary character of the dependability concept over the last fifty years. Beginning from simple models based on the classical probability theory through the concepts of tolerating faults as well as resilience engineering we come to the assumptions of Cognitive Dependability Engineering (CDE) based on the concept of continuous smart operation both under normal and abnormal conditions. The subject of the next part is analysis and synthesis of Cyber-Physical-Social (CPS) Systems. The methodology consists of the following steps: modeling CPS systems' structure simulating their behavior in changing conditions and in situations of disruptions and finally assessing the dependability of the entire system based on CDE. The last part of the work answers the question of how to deal with risks in CPS systems in situations of high level of uncertainty. The concept of a Cognitive Digital Twin was introduced to support the process of solving complex problems by experts and on this basis a framework for cognitive dependability based problemsolving in CPS Systems operating under deep uncertainty was developed. The possibilities and purposefulness of using this framework have been demonstrated with three practical examples of disasters that have happened in the past and have been thoroughly analyzed. | Cognitive Dependability Engineering Managing Risks in Cyber-Physical-Social Systems under Deep Uncertainty
