Carl Vine: Piano Sonata No.2

Edward Gregson: Clarinet Concerto (Clarinet/Piano)

Gregson's Clarinet Concerto was completed in 1994, by commission for the BBC, and was first performed by the BBC Philharmonic with Michael Collins in Manchester, April 1994 (later recorded on Chandos CHAN 10105). The writing is highly challenging, pushing the instrument and its performer to the limits with some formidable glissandi and stark contrasts. This edition features a piano reduction of Gregson's orchestral material.

Colin Matthews: Cortege (Score)

The title Cortege does not imply a funeral march, but rather a measured processional in which the colours are predominantly sombre and the mood dark and often menacing. One of the most important elements of the work is the sequence of minor triads heard at the outset and dominating the latter part of the work: these do not have a conventional harmonic function, but are a background which is suddenly thrown into stark relief to become the foreground.

Franz Liszt: Two Concert Etudes

The pianistically demanding studies “ Waldesrauschen ” and “ Gnomenreigen ” were written during the composer’s mature late phase, in which one does not necessarily expect such virtuosic pieces. Liszt composed them in 1862 in Rome for the Große theoretisch-praktische Klavierschule by Siegmund Lebert and Ludwig Stark. In so doing he honoured a pledge he had made some time before. Liszt was now teaching a large group of students. The two studies, published in 1863 and independent of the Klavierschule, were dedicated to his extremely gifted pupil Dionys Pruckner. He and other Liszt pupils often played them in concerts.

Bridge of the Gods

Commissioned by the Oregon Symphonic Band in Portland, Bridge of the Gods is a dramatic three-movement symphonic poem presenting the colorful legend told by the Native American Klickitatst about the origins of the volcanicmountains of the Cascade range and legendary bridge. The first movement “Saghalie” pays tribute to the powerful chief of all gods and is based on a majestic fanfare theme. The 2nd movement captures the beauty of themaiden “Loowit” with haunting flute and english horns solos accompanied by soft chanting voices. The final movement “Tanmahawis” utilizes stark clusters, jagged melodic fragments and rhythmic percussiveenergy as it depicts the destruction of the mighty bridge. Two Concert Studies, Ab irato, Morceau de salon : Waldesrauschen, Gnomenreigen

The Two Concert Studies, which Liszt composed in 1863 for Grand Theoretical and Practical Piano School by Sigmund Lebert and Ludwig Stark, became rather popular already in his lifetime.Today they are among the most often played works by Liszt. Morceau de salon is also a publication for piano education and was written for the Méthode des méthodes de piano of François-Joseph Fétis and Ignaz Moscheles and published in 1840. The virtuoso concert study was revised by Liszt under the title Ab irato a decade later. This edition contains the score of and critical notes to the above works as published in the New Liszt Edition, as well as prefaces in English and German, which provideinformation about all the important issues concerning the genesis and performance rendering.

Texas Blues Guitar - DVD

The Lone State boasts many cultural riches, and its gifts to the blues tradition are among its most exemplary treasures. The range of Texas blues guitar styles, both rural and urban, is captured in this collection of fourteen performances by four legendary Texas bluesmen. Blazing 1991 performances by the great Albert Collins generate a heat which belies his Iceman moniker. Freddie King cooks at full boil in a 1972 set which includes his signature song Going Down. Rare 1960 footage of Lightnin' Hopkins shows how intense the downhome acoustic Texas blues could be. Alternately stark and celebratory, the Texas blues of these performances comprise a legacy as expansive as the Lone State's legendary vistas.

Nico Muhly: Fast Cycles

Fast Cycles for Organ is a piece composed by Nico Muhly which appears on organist James McVinnie's album 'Cycles'. The song was commissioned by McVinnie and dates from 2009. A difficult piece, it showcases both the talents of Muhly as composer and the organist who plays it. Fast Cycles  draws from Muhly 's cyclical composition style, and has been called an "obsessively driven toccata". As the piece drives on, the hypnotic qualities of the upper notes of the Organ contrast with the stark and foreboding pedal tones. The dynamics of the piece result in passages of soft beauty and explosive ferocity, climaxing in a closing salvo that is to be played "as fast as possible". An exciting piece, Fast Cycles will no doubt show off the virtuosity of the organist who performs it. 

Missa in C major K.337 : Missa solemnis

Mozart composed the Mass in C K.337 about one year after the Coronation Mass K. 317; 'nel Marzo 1780 in Salisburgo' he wrote on the first page of his original score. And just as was the case with K.317, this work, togetherwith a new church sonata (K. 336/336), will have been intended for the Easter High Mass in Salzburg Cathedral. Move Him Into The Sun

for upper voices, SATB, and piano (with snare and tenor drums and solo cello) or chamber orchestra. This profound setting of poems by Wilfred Owen explores the idea of the sun as a redemptive force. The sense of humanconnection and vivid imagery of the natural world imbued in Owen's poetry is perfectly conveyed in Chilcott's music, which is rich in highly effective word painting and melodies as visceral as the poetry itself. Sadie Harrison: Sextet: "In Divers Knottes..."'

Sextet: "In Divers Knottes..." for Clarinet, Piano, Percussion, Violin, Viola and Cello. Composed 1998, published 2000. Duration: 16 minutes. This piece has had several working titles, the longest being Asteroceras obtusum (after a coiled fossil found during a summer visit to Lyme Regis), the most cynical, RAE III, and Flying Starts suggested by a colleague during a conversation about the importance of writing music that “takes off”! I decided on a title that conveyed something o the tangled contrapuntal nature of the piece, taken from an extended text by Stephen Hawes (The Historic of Graunde Amoure and la Bell Pucel, 1554) : With Flora paynted and wrought curiously in divers knottes. With many dragons of marveylos likenes Of divers floures made, full craftely By Flora couloured, with colours sundrye . The piece is episodic and is constructed from three principal textures – the opening music which introduces the only theme of the piece and which is never heard again in this form, the fast and increasingly hectic music which grows as the thee proliferates into several knotted variations of itself, and the very slow music which occurs twice as stark contrast to the surrounding material. Written last and within sight of the deadline, this music leaves some of the decisions to the players – the last gasps of the composer and the gathering energy within the piece! - Sadie Harrison

Six Études pour piano : Premiere Livre Opus 52

- Ground-breaking musical text based on the “Œuvres instrumentales complètes” by Camille Saint-Saëns - Extensive Foreword on the genesis and significance of the etudes (Fr/Eng/Ger) and a Critical Commentary (Eng) - With notes on interpretation (Fr/Eng/Ger) One of Saint-Saëns' mature works, the "Six Études pour piano" op. 52, appeared in 1877 around the same time as his opera "Samson et Dalila". The second etude of the cycle was originally written in 1868 for the “École du pianiste”, the French edition of the piano method by Lebert and Stark. With his collection, the composer who had embarked on a compilation of piano etudes for the first time, evidently wanted to deliberately? distinguish the cycle from the character of the brilliant concert etude: Each of the etudes is devoted to one or more specific difficulties or compositional techniques, as in the fugues. He assigned the individual pieces to famous virtuosos of his time, such as Anton or Nikolai Rubinstein or Marie Jaëll. The new Urtext editions are based on the ground-breaking musical text of the "Œuvres instrumentales complètes" by Camille Saint-Saëns, for which the editor has meticulously evaluated all known sources. A detailed Foreword provides information on the genesis and significance of the etudes. Readings and variants are precisely documented in the Critical Commentary (Eng). Notes on interpretation (Fr/Eng/Ger) as well as an elegant music engraving provide the pianist with optimal conditions for studying these virtuosic etudes.

Britannia : Hawkes Pocket Scores HPS 1446

Britannia was written in 1994 as a celebration of a major force in our musical life, the British orchestra. The work fulfils a commission from British Telecommunications plc with the Association of British Orchestras as part of the BT Celebration Series, and provides all the major UK orchestras with a new concert overture for performance in the 1994/95 season. Britannia is a ten-minute orchestral fantasy based on ‘patriotic themes’. There is no programme of story as such but the tapestry of popular melodies and resonant allusions, given their new and unfamiliar contexts, may provoke some surprising scenarios in the mind of the listener, particularly at a time when petty chauvinismthreatens to rear up once again throughout Europe. The piece grows out of a short sketch written earlier this year, Mémoire Impériale, which is based on a march tune by General Reid, an 18th century British army officer who established the music department at Edinburgh University. This theme and the ‘imperial’ themes of Elgar and Arne are thrown into a volatile concoction with other materials – an Irish reel (which becomes a jig), a Cockney drinking song, other march tunes and a hazy Celtic modality. All the main ideas are presented in a quick and stark succession during the fast opening section. The slow middle part begins with a serene canon which is gradually undermined by military allusions on brass and percussion. This confrontation leads to the work’s climax followed by an unsettled coda. Britannia is dedicated to Libby MacNamara of the Association of British Orchestras.

Pink Floyd Mind Over Matter 5th Ed

Written by Storm Thorgerson , the designer for the majority of Pink Floyd 's albums, this luxurious book features fascinating information and brilliantly vivid photographs that tell the instantly-recognisable story of one of the greatest bands ever. An essential book for any Floyd fan. This is the 5th edition of a book that includes some of the most famous artworks ever, by one of the most loved artists ever, about possibly the greatest rock band ever. That sounds like an exaggeration, but the wealth of stunning images contained within, album covers, posters, band photographs, adverts, flyers, T-shirts, and so on, will easily convince you that all three of those statements are true.  The late Storm Thorgerson first met David Gilmour at school when they were both teenagers, he then went on to found the graphic design company Hipgnosis, before founding Stormstudios later on.
