This piece describes the daily madness of traffic in a city full of cars, noise and exhaust fumes. Even in the countryside the 'monster on four wheels' has already arrived and is destroying idyllic villages. In the middle of the composition, we experience a traffic jam, where some drivers tend to behave in a very primitive way! This work is dedicated to all those who are affected by or are suffering from the overpowering proliferation of traffic. This work will 'drive' your audiences crazy with excitement !!

Niels Marhtinsen: Frøen / The Frog (Score)

The Frog (Frøen) for Narrator and Orchestra (2009). Text by Carl Quist Møller. Commissioned by Aarlborg Symphony Orchestra. A crazy liar story about the first love, frogs turning into royal Africans and a lobster which is really a submarine. The Frog is written for children’s concerts for children between five and ten years old. The narrator reads the story while the orchestra plays in the background. Occasionally the orchestra plays longer section without narrator; these sections are commenting on the story.The sections without narrator can be performed as a 10 minutes long orchestral work. The music is a wild, visually evocative, all fun-mixture of modern pop- and dance-music, African folk music and Western European avant-garde music.

Solemnitas

This short but solemn overture was written on the occasion of the 110th jubilee of Harmonie Hautcharage, Luxembourg. It is an homage to Jean-Paul Frisch and his son Gérard (the present conductor), who each have been conducting theensemble for many years. Under their leadership, the band has developed and improved remarkably. The very first musical theme, presented during the introduction of this little overture, is based on the letters hidden in the namesJean-Paul and Gérard Frisch (in which h is considered b as it is in German), thus aiming the spotlight on both key figures in the history of Harmonie Hautcharage. After the rather stately intro, the allegro is more joyful andlighthearted, thus depicting the optimism of the many young players of the band. The end is exciting and energetic: it radiates positivity and belief in the future.

Naturals for 'safety'.Programme NotesIn this day and age, when faced with the challenge of writing a 'Piano Concerto', e.g. a piece for symphony orchestra and an all-dominating and virtuosic solo Piano part, one has two options: either: DO, or do NOT go for it wholesale, exploiting and enjoying the conrnucopia of sonorous treasures offered by the combination of the orchestra and the 'Grand Piano'. I have opted to go for it. When writing for one of our great young international Piano stars, it would be absurd, and a waste, to do anything less and only 'nibble at the goodies'.However, the piece is not a big, clunky 'machine'. Rather it is a transparently orchestrated neo-classic (for the lack of a better work) composition in three movements, lastign approximately 25 minutes.The piece begins with a moderately paced opening, in which the Piano gradually gathers momentum and strength, beginning with the most gentle of motifs. In this movement the soloist and orchestra fo not always agree, and the vigilant listener will observe the disparity between the two. Following a swift, up-beat coda, the movement stops, almost in mid-breath, on one of the gentle Piano chords taken from the very opening.The extreme simplicity of the second movement, 'Semplice' (the opening Piano solo bears the marking: 'slightly hesitant - like a child practicing') is, after having been joined by the Vibraphone, Harp and solo Violin, suddenly violated with unprecedented brutality by the rest of the orchestra, which virtually 'lies in wait - panting to pounce'. But eventually calm and order is restored.The finale is a crazy rondo of sorts. The marking 'Avanti Risoluto' (Forward with Resolve) is a bit of an understatement. It is a full throttle, no hold barred ride - and hopefully lots of fun for everybody.         - Poul Ruders, February 2010
