Modern wind music in the style of the great Big Bands was the model for the composition Band Fever by Otto M. Schwarz. The piece features two soloists, saxophone and flugel horn. Rhythms such as Hip Hop and Double Samba support acatchy melody played by the full band. This forms the basis for the soloists' improvisations. This unique concert band work allows both soloists and conductor to display individuality and creativity. It is especially suitable as alight opening piece or as a feature number to display the great skills of your saxophone and flugel (or trumpet) players.

The sky creates a dazzling display of yellows, oranges, and reds, before turning a calm blue, then purple, and finally black. Such sunsets inspired Jan de Haan to write this piece for solo flugelhorn and brass band. It is dedicated to his daughter, Hermanda.

Rush

Grade 5Written as a follow-up to his wildly successful composition Ride, this new work from Samuel Hazo was commissioned by the Wenger Corporation and premiered at the 2006 Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Like itspredecessor, Rush is an exhilarating display of rhythmic intensity, featuring shifting meters and dynamic wind band scoring. Sure to leave your listeners breathless. All Together

All Together is a sparkling piece that is suitable for various playing levels, and offers the ideal motivation for young musicians within your society. Peter Kleine Schaars wrote this composition especially for (combined) ensembles withdifferent playing skills. Musicians can display their abilities at their own level and in between, they all play together. The ‘grade three parts’ contain all levels in cues, so that this composition can also be played by the large band only.

Apollo : Osakan

Like previous marches by Jan Van der Roost (Mercury, Arsenal, Helios, Minerva, Artemis, Montana...) the overall character of Apollo is rather stately and noble. Broad themes and a lyrical trio melody offer the opportunity for variousregisters to shine and to display their qualities, making this concert march a captivating experience for players and audience alike! Starting in a minor key, the march soon turns towards the major, reflecting the festive character of a true'jubilee march'.

LOL (Laugh Out Loud)

LOL (Laugh Out Loud) is a wacky, fast-and-furious barn-burner reminiscent of a circus march or screamer. It was written for the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy in celebration of their 75th anniversary as an opportunity to display their dazzling technical facility and humor. Cartoon-like trombone glissandi, flying woodwinds, dizzying brass and laughing rhythms create a zany and thrilling off the wall highlight to any occasion. Dur: c. 2:50

Laguna di Grado : partly based on a theme by Guglielmo Czuberth as written in 1861

Picture yourself in the marvellous paradise of Italy’s Grado Lagoon. The magnificent display of colour and the salty scent of sea air combine with the fragrant tamarisk to create a unique atmosphere. In this glorious haven time stands still - except for the flight of the seagulls and the slow flood tide. From a distance you hear an adagio coming through the air from a procession of boats. Its solemn tones dissipate into the landscape of the lagoon.

Farewell Medley

While it can be fairly easy to select a musical piece for the beginning of a concert, the search for a proper closing piece can sometimes be more difficult. Helping to fill this gap was Stefan Schwalgin's motivation for this Farewell Medley. In this piece he has woven four world-famous folk tunes from the Anglo/Irish/Scottish culture (Danny Boy, Amazing Grace, The Last Post and Auld Lang Syne) into a high-quality arrangement that allows the band to display its full range of colours at the end of any concert.

Mercury is a concert march composed in a typically British idiom. In 1990, Jan Van der Roost wrote this piece on the occasion of the 15-year anniversary of his own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant. Like many British marches, the main theme is written in a minor key. Powerful and virtuoso themes characterize the first part of this march, while the trio melody is much more melodical, offering the tenor register to display its lyrical skills. Follows a dynamic passage for trombones and trumpets/cornets, leading to a "grandioso" version of the main trio melody and thus concluding this march in a magnificent way.

Band Fever

It was written on commission of the prestigious South Tyrolese concert band, Symphonic Winds. The piece features two soloists, one saxophone and one flugel. Rhythms like Hip Hop Style and Double Samba support a catchy melody, which is later taken up by the full band, forming the basis for the above-mentioned soloists’ improvisations. A unique work in the world of wind music, Band Fever allows both soloists and conductor to display individuality and creativity. It is especially suitable as an opener of the light part of a concert, or as afeature number for special soloists in the orchestra.

Landscapes : Concerto Grosso for Brass Band and Percussion

Landscapes is a work structured around two main ideas. On the one hand, the music freely paints some of the superb landscapes I’ve seen during several of my trips around the world. Listeners should, however, not be influenced by this programmatic framework and are encouraged to build their own ‘mind pictures’.On the other hand, Landscapes constitutes a test piece for each section of the brass band. Indeed, each musical landscape highlights a particular register. A small group of soloists is given the opportunity to fully display its skills in dialogue with the rest of the band (the tutti), hence the name ‘concerto grosso’. Landscapes also relies on the band’s different soloistmusicians when it comes to express highly complex, musically and technically challenging passages.

Parnassus

Since most of the bands competing in the 4th Section of the Dutch National Championships have many young players, this piece is stylistically youthful— especially in the opening and closing sections. An arpeggio pattern appears numerous times in all registers and is the basic musical element of the main melody, alternating with a second theme that has a slightly different melodic character. The middle section is conceived like a chorale, introduced and developed stepwise: firstly with short patterns and gradually in increasingly long snippets, until it’s played in its glorious entirety at measure 216. No real solo passages are included but rather small chambercombinations, thus offering the opportunity to various players to display their technical and performance skills. The finale recaptures musical material from the first section of the piece and provides a majestic conclusion.

Poul Ruders: Break-Dance (Parts)

Break-Dance is an obvious next of kin to the two Clarinet trios Vox In Rama and Tattoo For Three. This piece, however, combines the roaring despair of the first trio with the twisted rhythmical display of the latter. The title, of course, is a reference to the modern street-dance electric boogie, but the very music itself takes the naming most literally indeed: formally and rhythmically, after a straightforward head-on opening, it breaks into isolated, jagged fragments, winding up in a bouncing piano cadenza. Albeit not an obvious piano concerto, the piano part hovers in the front line, the same way the horizontal guy, ringing himself on the pavement, is doubtless an eye-catcher to passers-by. The springy 'body-language' that kicks off the piece suddenly stiffens and freezes into hard-edged blocks and the real 'dance of breaks' emerges into focus. Break-dance is commissioned by and dedicated to Yvar Mikhashoff and Spectrum. Arranged for 2 Trumpets, 3 Trombones, and Piano.
