Jack Hawes: Magnificat And Nunc Dimittis In D (SATB)

Jack Hawes (1916-2004) was a British composer, cellist, and pianist. He wrote widely for choir, orchestra, strings, and solo instruments, and cited his influences as Walton, Ireland, Bliss, Delius, and Debussy. His first setting of the evening canticles, the Magnificat And Nunc Dimittis in D , was completed in 1955 and dedicated to the church of St Mary-Le-Tower, Ipswich, where he sang as a boy chorister and first began to study the organ. It is scored for SATB with Organ accompaniment, and is firmly in the 20th century Anglican style, with plenty of soaring melodic lines and big climatic moments.

In Chicago of the '30s and 40s and in the post-war West Coast jump scene the piano was arguably the blues instrument par excellence, but by the mid-to-late '50s work for pianists in the domestic blues front was becoming increasingly scarce. Around the same time, however, a new professional avenue was opening, with the stirrings of a ?blues revival" in European folk and trad. -Jazz scenes, where pianists were appreciated more for their mastery of older styles than their ability to adapt to newer commercial trends. While the European market wasn't of a grand scale, its attractions - both financial and social - are perhaps best illustrated by the fact that many great pianists chose to stay in Europe, among them three we find in this CD series - Champion Jack Dupree, Memphis Slim and Eddie Boyd.

Jack Hatfield: First Lessons Banjo

First Lessons on Banjo is an ultra-easy instruction manual for beginning five-string banjo played in the three finger style in G tuning. It can be used by those with no previous experience with the banjo or music of any sort. It is so basic it can be used even by small children. The book features very detailed descriptions of even the most basic aspects such as wearing the picks properly, the correct picking motion, and noting the strings properly. These are aspects that are so basic most manuals skip over them. There are many detailed photos, several from the player's point of view, not from in front of the banjo. First Lessons on Banjo covers the most basic rolls, the Alternating Thumb Roll and two Forward Rolls, plus the three basic chords plus the relative minor chord. All musical examples are presented in tablature, with the melody notes in boldface type so the student knows which notes to emphasize. All arrangements include lyrics, which is very important to the novice who is trying to train the ear to hear the melody among the fill notes. Several tips and suggestions about the proper mental approach are included that will lead to playing by ear and arranging at an earlier stage in the student's development. There are also suggestions about developing the proper mental approach and about speed reading of tablature. These suggestions are not found in any other banjo instruction book. The 'finale' arrangement is Cripple Creek, a popular banjo standard that when mastered, should give the novice a great sense of accomplishment. The accompanying recording includes all tabbed examples, with the rhythm instruments and lead banjo in separate channels. The songs are played at three tempos, the first tempo VERY slow, then a medium tempo version, and finally at performing speed with guitar, mandolin and bass accompaniment. The up- tempo accompanied versions are all together at the end of the recording so it the final tracks be used as a listening recording. This also allows the student to play along with all the more interesting arrangements in sequence without skipping around the recording.

Gilbert And Sullivan: The Yeomen Of The Guard (Libretto)

'Yeomen of the Guard? is a more ?serious? Gilbert and Sullivan opera and this perhaps accounts for it?s original lukewarm reception, as it ran contrary to audience expectation. Set in the Tower of London in the sixteenth century, the libretto concerns a jester, Jack Point and his girl Elsie, who plot to aid a war hero who is sentenced to die in the Tower. That hero, Colonel Fairfax, has been condemned to die by a relative who stands to inherit his fortune. Fairfax wants to marry someone just before his execution, so that his bride will inherit instead. Jack sets Elsie up to marry Fairfax, thinking it will do no harm. However, Fairfax escapes and remains in the area in disguise. He spots Jack trying to woo Elsie and gives a demonstration of the proper way to woo, winning Elsie's affections himself. In the end, everyone pairs off except Jack, who loses Elsie to Fairfax and is heartbroken. This is the Chappell/IMP Edition of the Libretto containing all the dialogue.
