Introduction to Adhesive Bonding - Eduardo Andre Sousa Marques - Bog - Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH - Plusbog.dk

Introduction to Adhesive Bonding - Eduardo Andre Sousa Marques - Bog - Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH - Plusbog.dk

Introduction to Adhesive Bonding A step-by-step introduction to basic principles and practical applications of adhesive bonding, designed for students and professionals alike Adhesive bonding—the process of joining two surfaces using glues, epoxies, plastic agents, and other adhesives—is a major technique with wide applications in industries as a diverse as aerospace, footwear manufacturing, and food packaging. Adhesive bonding holds several advantages over conventional joining techniques, such as uniform stress concentrations, protection of the bonded surfaces or joints, and the ability to join a variety of different materials and irregular surfaces. Introduction to Adhesive Bonding provides an accessible overview of the principles and common applications of adhesive bonding. Using a systematic approach, the authors thoroughly explain each step necessary to achieve a successful adhesive bond, including surface preparation, bonding agent selection, design and construction of bonded joints, health and safety considerations, and quality control. Readers are provided with both the theoretical foundation and practical information required to plan and complete their own adhesive bonding projects. This comprehensive yet reader-friendly volume: Highlights the inherent advantages of adhesive bonding in various applicationsDescribes the use of adhesive bonding in the development of novel and advanced projects in different industriesFeatures numerous real-world examples of adhesive bonding in areas such as the transportation industry, civil engineering, medical applications, and sports equipmentDiscusses how adhesives enable development of new products and constructions of reduced weight and sizeIdentifies important limitations and durability concerns of the use of adhesives in specific applications Introduction to Adhesive Bonding is an ideal textbook for undergraduate or graduate Engineering and Chemistry programs, and a useful reference for researchers and industry professionals working in fields such as Engineering, Surface and Polymer Chemistry, and Materials Science.

This book presents the analysis of up-to-date techniques used for the determination of acid-base properties in view of their applicability to examination of solid organic and inorganic surfaces. The studies have been carried out by the authors since 1993, showing experimental data on surface properties of more than 150 polymers, such as carbocatenary and heterochain polymers, copolymers and their blends, as well as different epoxy and rubber compositions used in adhesive joints. The adhesive ability of metal-polymer systems based on epoxy compositions, polyolefins, and rubbers was studied as a function of absolute difference in acid-base properties of adhesive and adherends, and the possibility to predict adhesive interaction on this basis was experimentally verified. The book shows the important role that acid-base interactions play in establishing interfacial adhesive-adherent contact and outlines practical recommendations regarding parameters of quantitative estimation of acid-base surface properties that implies the relationship with adhesive ability in polymer-metal systems. Creating polymeric materials with greater strength characteristics when in contact with metals is the most important problem when adhesive joints are designed. The authors obtained experimental data for thermodynamic and acid-base properties of about 200 organic and inorganic surfaces that find a wide practical application. These results may be used as a reference source to predict the adhesive ability of different coating systems. The possibility to predict adhesive interaction of adhesive with adherend, taking into account the absolute difference in their acidity and basicity, was verified experimentally.

Surgical Adhesives & Sealants - David H. Sierra - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Surgical Adhesives & Sealants - David H. Sierra - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

From the Preface Surgical tissue adhesives are an ancient idea, going back to the beginnings of recorded history. The concept of adhering, rather than suturing, packing, or stapling planes of tissue is attractive, in that it is fast-acting and assures complete closure. Numerous technologies have been tried; some with limited success, others outright failures. In short, the perfect adhesive does not exist. Limitations occur in a number of areas: strength, toxicity, degradation, and safety. It is also important to keep in mind that "one size fits all" does not apply to adhesives in surgical applications any more than it does in day-to-day application. As one would not use paper glue to seal a bathtub, one would presumably not apply an adhesive onto tendons, which is suitable for sealing corneas. The properties required of an adhesive for each indication are quite different. Over the last twenty-five years, advances have been made in a wide range of technologies targeting some embodiment of a practical and safe adhesive. Foremost and successful among these are cyanoacrylates, marine adhesive proteins, and fibrin-based sealants. Another promising adhesive technology is laser solders, a mixture of polypeptides and proteoglycans, which integrates with the repair site when laser energy is applied. In light of these advances in the field, the Symposium for Surgical Tissue Adhesives was organized and held at the Atlanta Hyatt from October 8-10, 1993. The goal was to bring together these far-flung technologies in a comprehensive and cohesive manner. Presentations by investigators from around the world described the history of adhesives in medicine, current technologies, laboratory characterizations, and application developments, as well as regulatory aspects and clinical applications. We felt that as many viewpoints as possible, however conflicting, were important to present in order to give the most complete picture of the state of the art of surgical adhesives.
