Medium of instruction policies in education have considerable impact not only on the school performance of students and the daily work of teachers, but also on various forms of social and economic (in)equality. In many multiethnic and multilingual countries, the choice of a language for the medium of instruction in state educational systems raises a fundamental and complex educational question: what combination of instruction in students'' native language(s) and in a second language of wider communication will ensure that students gain both effective subject-content education, as well as the second-language skills necessary for higher education and employment? Beyond this educational issue of choice of language(s) of instruction, medium of instruction policies are also linked to a range of important sociopolitical issues, including globalization, migration, labor policy, elite competition, and the distribution of economic resources and political power. The contributors to this volume examine the tension between the educational agendas and other social and political agendas underlying medium of instruction policies in different countries around the world, and unravel the connections between these policies and the related, critically important educational, social, political, and economic issues. Medium of Instruction Policies: Which Agenda? Whose Agenda? is intended for scholars and specialists in education, language policy, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, and language teaching, and is intended for use in graduate and advanced undergraduate courses on language education and language policy.

The Typographic Medium - Kate Brideau - Bog - MIT Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

An innovative examination of typography as a medium of communication rather than part of print or digital media. Typography is everywhere and yet widely unnoticed. When we read type, we fail to see type. In this book, Kate Brideau considers typography not as part of "print media" or "digital media" but as a medium of communication itself, able to transcend the life and death of particular technologies. Examining the contradiction between typographic form (often overlooked) and function (often overpowering), Brideau argues that typography is made up not of letters but of shapes, and that shape is existentially and technologically central to the typographic medium. After considering what constitutes typographic form, Brideau turns to typographic function and how it relates to form. Examining typography''s role in both the neurological and psychological aspects of reading, she argues that typography''s functions exceed reading; typographic forms communicate, but that communication is not limited to the content they carry. To understand to what extent the design and operations of the typographic medium affect the way we perceive information, Brideau warns, we must understand the medium''s own operational logic, embodied in the full diversity of typographic forms.Brideau discusses a range of topics--from intellectual property protection for typefaces to Renaissance and Enlightenment ideal letterforms--and draws on a wide variety of theoretical work, including phenomenological ideas about comprehension, German media archaeology, and the media and communication theories of Vilém Flusser and others. Hand-drawn illustrations of typographic forms accompany the text.

The Physics of the Interstellar Medium - J.e. (dept Of Physics And Astronomy Dyson - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This third edition of The Physics of the Interstellar Medium continues to introduce advanced undergraduates to the fundamental processes and the wide range of disciplines needed to understand observations of the interstellar medium and its role in the Milky Way galaxy. The book is suitable for undergraduate students studying physics, astronomy, and astrophysics. The book also provides concise and straightforward discussions of interstellar physics and chemistry that are useful for more experienced readers. The book leads readers through the range of physical processes operating on both large and small scales that occur in the interstellar medium. It explores the relationship between the dusty, tenuous gas in interstellar space and the formation of stars and planets. This new edition also describes exciting developments in the field of astrochemistry and its interaction with interstellar physics, and the roles played by interstellar dust grains in interstellar physics and chemistry. Simple models in each chapter, together with problems at the end of each chapter, encompass interdisciplinary applications in atomic, molecular, solid state, and surface physics, and gas dynamics. This popular textbook provides a useful overview and grounding in the study of the interstellar medium and brings insight into many aspects of physics. Features - - An authoritative textbook in the field at this academic level - - - Provides a wide introduction to the interstellar medium whilst remaining accessible and concise - - - Revised throughout, presenting a modern understanding of the interstellar medium -

Project Management in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises - Anna Brzozowska - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The growing importance of projects in organizations, combined with difficulties in their implementation, is accompanied by the need for professional knowledge in the field of project management. It results from the complexity of project management problems and the difficulty of knowledge that must be applied. However, surprisingly little is known about this topic, especially in the context of European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Project Management in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: A European Perspective attempts to fill this specific research gap. The book analyses the process of managing projects being implemented by small and medium-sized firms from Europe, identifies organizational processes, and verifies which elements of these processes require improvement. It concentrates on issues around the multifaceted characteristics of project management, with particular emphasis on the process of managing European small and medium enterprises. The book is the result of many years of empirical research and consists of two main parts: - A systematization of concepts, terminology, and thus knowledge in the field of project management, with particular emphasis on the phases of planning, organizing, as well as leading and controlling in the project, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, with particular emphasis on their specificity and role in the modern European economy. A systematization of concepts, terminology, and thus knowledge in the field of project management, with particular emphasis on the phases of planning, organizing, as well as leading and controlling in the project, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, with particular emphasis on their specificity and role in the modern European economy - Verification and development of such model procedures in the management of projects so that the SME enterprises’ functioning will be efficient and effective. There is a close relationship between the two parts. The theoretical part is the foundation on which practical considerations are later carried out. Integrating theoretical and practical issues, the book introduces new content to the literature and has the practical value of indicating how to manage projects in SMEs in the European Union. It also examines the decision-making processes related to project management in these organizations.

The Sympathetic Medium - Jill Galvan - Bog - Cornell University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Sympathetic Medium - Jill Galvan - Bog - Cornell University Press - Plusbog.dk

The nineteenth century saw not only the emergence of the telegraph, the telephone, and the typewriter but also a fascination with séances and occult practices like automatic writing as a means for contacting the dead. Like the new technologies, modern spiritualism promised to link people separated by space or circumstance; and like them as well, it depended on the presence of a human medium to convey these conversations. Whether electrical or otherworldly, these communications were remarkably often conducted—in offices, at telegraph stations and telephone switchboards, and in séance parlors—by women. In The Sympathetic Medium, Jill Galvan offers a richly nuanced and culturally grounded analysis of the rise of the female medium in Great Britain and the United States during the Victorian era and through the turn of the century. Examining a wide variety of fictional explorations of feminine channeling (in both the technological and supernatural realms) by such authors as Henry James, George Eliot, Arthur Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker, Marie Corelli, and George Du Maurier, Galvan argues that women were often chosen for that role, or assumed it themselves, because they made at-a-distance dialogues seem more intimate, less mediated. Two allegedly feminine traits, sympathy and a susceptibility to automatism, enabled women to disappear into their roles as message-carriers. Anchoring her literary analysis in discussions of social, economic, and scientific culture, Galvan finds that nineteenth- and early twentieth-century feminization of mediated communication reveals the challenges that the new networked culture presented to prevailing ideas of gender, dialogue, privacy, and the relationship between body and self.
